▪ Start the first day of class with a
demonstration- what do you expect from
your students?
▪ Decide how you will sell it.
– Ask students about lectures last year… boring?
– Show them a video about flipping and list
advantages
– Give an analogy
– No excuses! There are resources available at
school or at home
▪ Flash drive, DVD, ipod/ipod nano, library
computers before/after school, during ac lab,
lunch, homeroom…
Flippin’ Parents
▪ Send a letter home on the first day/
by email- include description and
advantages
– What will it look like in your classroom?
▪ Have a class blog/Instagram/Twitter-
keep kids interested and parents
involved!
Check Your Students
▪ Accountability- what will your students need
to do to prove they watched the video?
Will you make them prove it at all?
– WSK/KWL/Notes
▪ Assigned due dates- each video have a due
date? Due by end of unit?
▪ Homework v.s. Class time?
– Will you let students watch videos in class or make
them strictly homework?
– Have a system in place to make sure they have
watched video by assigned date.
Check Your Students
▪ Demonstrate in the classroom- modeling is
everything!
– Let a student “drive” the video on your
computer, and go at their pace.
– Use this as a lesson- did they go to fast?
Too slow? This is an advantage of viewing
videos on your own- you can go at your
own pace!

 If the whole class is struggling over a concept, teach more. If
just a few, work with them to the side during activity time

Average 10 min. ▪ Speak clearly ▪ Make a script/notes for students with accomodations/ELL students ▪ Don’t worry if it’s not perfect! ▪ Start simple! Flippin’ Students ▪ Start the first day of class with a demonstration- what do you expect from your students? ▪ Decide how you will sell it. – Ask students about lectures last year… boring? – Show them a video about flipping and list advantages – Give an analogy – No excuses! There are resources available at school or at home ▪ Flash drive, DVD, ipod/ipod nano, library computers before/after school, during ac lab, lunch, homeroom…
  • 13. Flippin’ Parents ▪ Send a letter home on the first day/ by email- include description and advantages – What will it look like in your classroom? ▪ Have a class blog/Instagram/Twitter- keep kids interested and parents involved!
  • 14. Check Your Students ▪ Accountability- what will your students need to do to prove they watched the video? Will you make them prove it at all? – WSK/KWL/Notes ▪ Assigned due dates- each video have a due date? Due by end of unit? ▪ Homework v.s. Class time? – Will you let students watch videos in class or make them strictly homework? – Have a system in place to make sure they have watched video by assigned date.
  • 15. Check Your Students ▪ Demonstrate in the classroom- modeling is everything! – Let a student “drive” the video on your computer, and go at their pace. – Use this as a lesson- did they go to fast? Too slow? This is an advantage of viewing videos on your own- you can go at your own pace!
  • 16. What Does Flippin’ Class Time Look Like? ▪ IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT THE VIDEOS! What you do IN class is the most important ▪ YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ASSIGN VIDEOS AS HOMEWORK!! Dr. Lodge McCammon suggest you show the videos as the first part of class. ▪ Hints: – Best practices still apply! – Chaos is okay! – DO NOT RE-TEACH! – Give up your control – BE CONSISTENT! – Stand your ground- commit!
  • 17. Then What Do You Do With Class Time? Inquiry Based Activities! ▪ Alternative Assessments! Labs and Hands-on Activities Peer Instruction! Class/Group/Individual Projects! Genius Hour!

Glance into a Flippin’ Science Classroom In a typical 80-minute day: ▪ Mrs. Horstmann’s Checklist 0:00-15:00= Warm-up/Bellringer- ▪ Used to check for HW completion, depth of knowledge and check for understanding 15:00-25:00= Discussion over video material, comments or concerns  DO NOT REVIEW THE WHOLE VIDEO!!!  Sticky notes, today’s notes, Google Forms…  If the whole class is struggling over a concept, teach more. If just a few, work with them to the side during activity time

Glance into a Flippin’ Science Classroom In a typical 80-minute day: 25:00-75:00= Work Time!  Catch up on videos  Check for understanding  Discussion boards  Textbook reading guides  LABS  75:00-bell= reflection/closing  Exit slips, post it notes, journals, survey, class discussion, vocab review… I  Guided Practice  Small Group Discussion  Review Work  Graphic Organizers  Alternative assignments (advanced level work?)
