Road To
Flipped Classroom is not a “fix” but one of many methods
that are used to encourage an active learning environment.
To reach success, we must be able to move outside of our comfort zone
It Takes Work!
How Do We Begin the Change—One Step at a Time!!
Basic Principle of Flipped Classrooms
What is traditionally done in the class is now done at home
and what is done at home can be done in the classroom
But it really isn’t that simple 
This method is well thought out before using—
and uses both summative and formative assessment
It’s Not a Magic
Bullet
There are Many Ways to Flip
Your Classroom
and PowerPoint 2008 (Mac)**
Cross-Platform Compatibility
 Don’t think you have to make your own videos—there is much available now
on line especially at Khan Academy
Takes time to plan on what “parts” of your content/classroom you want to
flip—not everything fits with flipping”
Find Help (like this series ) or a partner to work with to help you on this
journey
Find out what is the “best” way to access your students—what access to they
have at home, do some need to have the information “burned” on a disc, do all
have the capability of Elluminate, etc?
Find a way to engage students in the videos, not just “listening” to lectures
on tapes. Should follow by some sort of discussion questions, etc.

Advantages: Using technology to give
students control of their interactions
which has a positive effect on student
learning
Problems:
We don’t know what to do with the extra time if we do
not lecture in the class.
How we teach changes considerably
Time is needed to develop the videos and discussions as
well as activities that will be done in the classroom
To “do what you want with the time in classroom” is not
enough to help teachers know what to do!
More on this in future classes 

Why Change????
Why You Should Not Change--If
Because
everyone is
doing it!
Because you
think it is
cutting edge
Because it is
easier
Because it
exempts us
from being
good teachers

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Flipped Classroom is just a coined statement that has many different meanings and really none at all. I would like you to go on a journey with me—our journal is to help us become the best educators possibly. And in some cases that may mean we need to throw out what we are doing today in order to change our educational system. Example of Power Point
  • #4 We are here to reach to all of our students, not just the smart ones. So we need to continuously find venues, often a variety that can reach all different types or students. This can be extremely challenging and pushes us, as educators outside of our comfort zone. But it has to be done because education, as we teach it today, is not working.
  • #7 Flip classrooms are well thought out and use both summative and formative assessment. They take time and commitment to do and this method is not a magic bullet to education; teachers still have to passionate and caring about what they are teaching and the students believe they want to help them learn. We need a strong pedagogy that drives out technology—never the other way around!
  • #9 One of the major evidence-based advantages of the use of video is that learners have control over the media with the ability to review parts that are misunderstood, which need further reinforcement, and/or those parts that are of particular interest. Using
  • #10 Students don’t control what they want to learn, they are controlling how they are learning The Flipped Classroom Model helps to guide faculty in that transition.
  • #11 Games Group Examinations I still have one of the highest percentage of students who do not pass my class over other nursing classes Video Lectures through camtasia, powerpoint with voice over, podcasting Online Chats, Elluminate, discussion boards
  • #16 Example of the Kan Academy which has numerous “free” classes on line. They are short ~ 15 minutes and simple to understand.
