The magazine represents particular social groups in its content. It primarily targets females aged 12-16 from middle-class, white, British backgrounds. While most of the pictures and front page feature females, there are more articles about male artists. This is likely meant to attract female readers through sexuality. The artists featured as role models are also around the same age as the target audience. The $3.99 price point targets middle-class readers, and only white, British individuals are depicted, making the magazine monocultural.

Gender and social representation
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Representation of Gender
• Because pop music is aimed and predominantly
listened to by females, my magazine is also aimed
at females. Although I have taken pictures of
more females than males on my contents and
front page, the listing for what is inside the
magazine has a male bias. This is more likely to
attract females because of their sexuality. This
means that males seem more important in my
magazine because there are 4 articles on male
artists, and only 2 on female artists.
Male artists
3. Representation of Age
• The age range of my magazine is between 12-16. This is
expressed through the artists on the cover. They are around
the same age of my audience if not slightly older, which
makes them role models and makes younger readers want
to be like them. The age range of the characters in the
magazine reflect the age of the readers. I have played to
the stereotypes of teenage girls as I have used words they
would use like ‘hottest’. I have also played to the stereotype
of all teenage girls being boy obsessed by featuring various
male artists within the magazine. I think my magazine does
apply to a slightly younger audience than teen, which
wasn’t my initial plan but I think the magazine works
better if it is aimed at pre teens – teens.
4. Representation of Social Class
• My magazine is aimed at middle class teenagers. This is
shown through the price of my magazine. I felt that
£3.99 was an appropriate pricing, which would be seen
as a normal amount to pay for those of a middle class
background, while working class teenagers may find
this price excessive. I have also photographed other
middle class teenagers as the artists on the cover and
within my magazine. This reinforces the idea that it
would be bought by those of a middle class. The lexis
used in my magazine won’t completely exclude those
of a working class background but it is possible.
5. Representation of Ethnicity
• The characters in my magazine are all
white, British. This makes it more likely that other
white, British individuals will read my magazine.
Because of this my magazine is monocultural. It is
stereotypically true that more white, British
teenagers listen to pop music than other ethnic
groups. I don’t think that the white, British
dominance in my magazine causes other ethnic
groups to become excluded as most pop music
artists are also white, British.
6. Audience
• My audience will be female, aged between 12-16. They
are more likely to be of a middle class background and
be white, British.
• They will use my media product to identify themselves
with other readers of the magazine and the artists
within the magazine to create a sense of belonging, or
just to catch up on what their favourite celebrities are
doing as most readers of the magazine will have friends
who are also interested in pop music and the same
things as them. They will also use the product for
satisfying curiosity and general interest. They will read
it as a means of relaxation or for something to do.
