Writing on the Walls: Using Whiteboard Walls to Engage Student Learning

During the summer of 2015, MBC librarians renovated their learning space.

All MBC students must take INT 103: Information Literacy. Three librarians teach 10 sections of approximately 10-15 students. After the
classroom renovation, the librarians redesigned selected activities to incorporate the whiteboard walls. Part of the class evaluation survey
asked students about the use of the whiteboard walls in class activities. The responses used a Likert scale:
1: the most negative response— 5: the most positive response.

What activities/exercises do you remember doing on the whiteboard walls?
Student Comments
Which activity, in-class exercise or unit was the most use-
ful? Why?: 35/73 responses mentioned the whiteboards
 Interactive activities that included the white board (sic), smart
board and clickers.
 I also enjoyed the practice on the board.
 I would say the use of the whiteboard walls.
 When we use the dry erase boards. Im (sic) a hands on type of
person and that really helps me learn.
 Using the whiteboard, because it made it much easier to correct
any mistakes and have a helpful visual for how to do a search,
or whatever else.

 Having us compete with one another and writing examples on
the board was highly helpful because it gave us hands on work
rather then listening to a lecture or reading pages in the book.
