Hi Everyone!
I’m Tara Johnson, Owner of AlchemyThree, a design agency here in West Concord. We go to great lengths to provide a complete package and wide range of services to our clients.
So what’s the deal with the name anyway?
According to Wikipedia, the definition of Alchemy is: A seemingly magical process of transformation, creation or combination of elements.
As for the 3, it’s an indicator of our core services: Design, Marketing and Strategy.
This is a quick list of the services we provide.

I’m very happy to offer a free, one-hour consultation if you or someone you know is interested in hearing more!
This morning I would like to talk a bit about the purpose of a website.
First, I need you to abandon the misconception that a website is merely a repository for your credentials and basic contact information. What I’ve just described is actually considered an online brochure and trust me---it’s not going to do you or your business any favors. If you’re going to spend valuable time and money to build a site, then it needs to be pulling it’s weight. It should be generating leads while you’re out there honing your skills and getting new business.

What I’d like you to do is think of a website like a healthy, bustling metropolis with a lively and fully-fun ctioning public transportation system. There are train lines coming in and out, transfers and express lines during the peak hours. There are parts of the the city where the line branches off and in some cases, will eventually grow into new, steadily growing neighborhoods.

Sadly, most of our sites, especially those built in the early to mid 2000s function like this. Don’t get me wrong: this is a lovely train station. It’s adorable and its functional and it serves a basic purpose. However, there is only ONE train and it moves along the same trajectory each and every day.
So how can you attract more attention to your site? And how can you establish yourself as a trusted source within your industry? Gone are the days of launching a site, sending a mass email to all of your friends and waiting for the calls and emails to come pouring in.
In the upper left is your overall score. As you can see, BNI Mass has a little work to do Today I’m going to touch on 3 of these elements: Blogging, Social Media and SEO.
Click
1. Write a blog. Blogging = Fresh content and content is the name of the game. Write about what you know and what you have to offer. Highlight what sets you apart. And more importantly, always ask yourself: what do people gain from connecting with you? Are you helpful and keeping your customers’ best interest at heart? Maybe you have some helpful home repair tips or perhaps you’re running a free workshop within your community. How do you keep your customers informed?

2. Feed the robots! In other words, help Google out and let it know that you’re there. This can be done simply and effectively---all you need to do is add some descriptive content, unique phrasing and keywords to your site. If these indicators don’t exist on your site, then Google has no idea where to go.
Click
3. Social Media. Believe it or not, Social Media isn’t just about posting photos of kids and puppies. It’s a powerful networking and marketing tool. You can use social media to reach out to other industry leaders, tune into their blogs and comment on their material. When you comment, their attention is piqued. They might look at your profile, check out your site and follow you in return.
Click
4. Have a voice and let it be heard. Let your values and personality shine! Again, it is all about building trust. Your customers want to know what you think, especially if it pertains to them. Don’t be afraid to have an opinion and let it be heard.
Click
5. Be helpful! Email addresses have become currency and customers, understandably, are reticent to give their information out for free. Consider a call to action: for instance, offer some tips of the trade, perhaps a free consultation or a coupon code.

So let’s talks about Blogs. Blogs are the epitome of fresh content. It has the potential to boost your site and your online presence dramatically. So check out the yellow chart. The Y-axis indicates the number of new customers and the x-axis is illustrating the frequency of blog posts. So the take away here is: The more blogs you post, the greater potential for an increase in customers.
A great quote: “ traditional marketing talks at people. Content marketing talks with them.” So it’s about opening the conversation, listening and valuing feedback from your customers. You need to be responsive, helpful and validate their experience.
CLICKSo in case the thought of writing a blog makes you sweat, here are a couple quick tips:
Write what you know
Tell stories, be human, be helpful
Infuse humor, personality and don’t be afraid to voice your opinion.
Here is an example of a blog post that is checking all of the boxes.
It’s helpful---free recipe and uses booze!
There are SO many opportunities for the viewer to engage :: instant ways to share via Social media, you can subscribe to the newsletter at the very top, you can follow their Instagram feed and check out their list of guest authors.
Think back to the concept of a bustling city—there are a number of ways to reach this content, share these ideas and engage with a larger community.
So, moving on to SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. By leveraging SEO it basically means that you are making your site easier to be found. So going back to our transportation analogy, imagine that you are distributing maps and tacking up signs for your online city, helping Google and eager clients to find their way to your services and offerings.
So here’s a quick check list of changes that can make a huge difference in your visibility. And this applies to any page on your site, not just product pages.
1. You need a page title. You want it to say something specific and relevant to the current page.
2. Utilizing H1 tags. This is webby nerd talk for a content header. This tag takes priority and tells Google that it’s important and should be indexed.
3. Product Description or Main Content. This is the meat of the page. This is where you want to generate unique text that makes use of valuable keywords used to describe the topic at hand.
4 Images. You want to make sure that attached to each image is a descriptive ALT tag. This descriptor tells Google what the image is----otherwise it’s essentially invisible.
So it seems that a lot of us may have a love/hate relationship with Social Media. To some business owners, Social Media can seem like a big waste of time simply because the return on investment isn’t always clear. However, in order to expand the reach of your business, an awareness of the online audience is going to become more and more crucial with each passing year.
Let’s consider Facebook for example:
- Facebook’s fastest growing demographic are people between the ages of 45-54.
There are more than 1.1 billion active users and over 700 million of those users log in every single day!
Five new profiles are created every second. This means that your potential audience on Facebook is growing exponentially.
So whether you like it or not, this is where a lot of people are choosing to hang out.
But Social Media can be just a tad overwhelming.
You can start to feel like this guy. (click)
There are a lot of business owners that recognize the value in Social Media engagement but opt out of doing most of it---they have a business to run after all. So what do they do? They hire a designer or agency to write, manage and publish the content for them!
For those of you that are ready to dive in Pick only one of the following (facebook, twitter, linkedin) and create a business profile. Get to know it your platform, establish a consistent presence and take a stab at creating content that is applicable to your profession. Take some time to read what others are posting and how they might be reaching out to their audience.
And don’t forget to have fun!
A great referral for us would be a company that has a marketing budget, an open mind and a vision!
