4. Claim of FACT
are inferences made based on data, documents, and scientific
observation results, and research.
These require grounds that are sufficient and appropriate, recent
and accurate data, and clearly defined terminologies.

5. EXAMPLE
- The oldest known disease in the world is leprosy.
-Death penalty does not deter crimes.

6. Claim of VALUE
-are judgement based on moral standards and norms.
-based on preference.

7. EXAMPLE
- Teacher Trisha is my favorite teacher.
-The GSW is the best team in the world!

8. Claim of POLICY
-are specific and measurable actions that need to be done in order to
address issues or concerns presented in the argument or proposition.
- requires proposal of clear and measurable actions or steps,
justification, advantage of proposed action, and possible counter
arguments.

9. EXAMPLE
- The congress should pass the bill.
-Death penalty should be imposed in the
Philippines.

10. Claim of CAUSE AND EFFECT
-argue that persons, things, and circumstances could produce a
result.
-established facts and appropriate evidences support the cause and
effect relationship.

11. EXAMPLE
- a man offends his neighbor by insulting him. His
neighbor becomes angry and he in turn tells his
friends.

12. Characteristics of a
good claim
• A claim should be argumentative
and debatable.
• It should be specific and focused.
• It should be interesting and
engaging.
• It should be logical.
