Sociometry is a method for measuring relationships between individuals in a group. It was developed by Jacob Moreno in the 1930s and involves asking group members to indicate their preferences for other members. This document discusses the history and applications of sociometry in education, including using it to identify popular, average, neglected, and controversial students. It also describes sociograms for charting relationships and the significance of sociometric analysis in understanding group dynamics and socialization, while noting limitations such as relationships not always being stable.

7. In education,
Socio-metric assessment is a valuable
means by which the teacher can determine
the relationships of individual student to
other students within the class.
It also allows the teacher to track the
roles of students in relation to one another
within the classroom, identifying popular
children who are the center of attention,
and the neglected children who are overlooked
by the majority of their peers.

8. The most commonly used socio-metric system developed by Cole and
Dodge (1988), asks children to rate how much they like and dislike each
of their classmates and uses these responses to classify them into 4
groups:

9. Children are designated as popular if
they receive many positive nominations.
Children are designated as average if
they receive an average number of both
positive and negative nominations.

10. REJECTED CHILDREN:
Children are designated as
neglected if they receive few
positive or negative nominations.
These children are not especially
liked or disliked by peers, and
tend to go unnoticed.

11. Children are designated as
controversial if they receive
many positive and negative
nominations. They are said to be
liked by a quite a few children,
by also disliked by quite a few.

12. TYPES OF SOCIOMETRY:
• Sociometry has two main branches:

13. SOCIOGRAM:
• A sociogram is a charting of two inter-relationships within a group. Its purpose
is to discover group structure, that is, the basic network of friendship patterns and
sub-group organization.
• The relations of any one child to the
group as a whole are another type of
information, which can be derived from
a socio-gram.
• A socio-grams value to a teacher is in its
potential for developing greater
understanding of group behaviour so that
he/she may operate more wisely in group
management and curriculum development. TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
14. SIGNIFICANCE OF SOCIO-METRIC STATUS:
• It enables us to learn about the group dynamics and evaluate socialization
levels of students after some social activities and their effects on reaching the
intended goal.

15. • It helps school administration, teachers and counseling department
by providing detailed information about the general structure & the
social relationships of the group.
• After applying these regulations, groups can be reconstructed to
increase efficiency in their performance.
• Due to being not an analyze of an individual only, but the analyze of
a person in a whole group, this technique gives us extensive amount
of information about a lot of people at the same time.
• Sociometry also gives us a change to identify the distance/closeness
of the group members with each other and the interaction net among
them.
• Additionally, it is beneficial in preventing adaptation problems
after having the application results in the hand.

16. LIMITAIONS:
• Not necessarily stable relationship.
• Some members of the group may not reveal their real
relationships on account of some fear or other
considerations.
• There are certain traits or qualities that are very difficult
to be measured and if at all they are measured through
observations or other tools the measurement may not
be accurate and free from subjectively.
• The investigators or counsellors find it difficult to think
of socio-metric measurement of individuals.

17. CONCLUSION:
Most important to all, the analysis of patterns of participation
and sociometry choices demonstrates that this type of brief training
can produce marked changes from hostile and emotionally toned and
individual-centered interpersonal relations to friendly and
work-centered and group-centered Interactions.
