SOCIALISATION DEFINITIONS :
According to Gecas;
“ Socialisation is the continuous process of
shaping one’s self concept, identity, various attitudes
and behaviours of the individual ”
According to Ogburn;
“ It is the process of learning the norms of the
group and society ”

AGENTS OF SOCIALISATION :
S0cialization carry on and reinforces their
homogeneity by fixing in the child from the beginning
the essential similarities of collective life ingredients .

FAMILY DEFINITION :
According to K. Davis;
“Family is a group of persons whose relations to
one another are based upon consistent unity and who are,
therefore, kin to one another”.
According to Elliot and Meril ;
“Family is the biological social unit composed of
husband , wife and children”.

FEATURES OF THE FAMILY :
The Family has the following
features;
 Universality
 Social environment which
influence the individual’s early
life
 Limited size
 Affected basis, emotionality
 Sense of responsibility among
the members .

NECESSARY AND RELEVANCE OF FAMILY IN
SOCIALISING THE CHILD:
1.To satisfy basic needs :
 The family is one of the many small face to face groups
that are called primary groups .
 The family is expected to satisfy economic feeding,
clothing, shelter, medical provision and so on .

2. To Promote cultural values:
It is also expected to transmit the cultural values
and norms to the young generation in order to be
fully socialization.
 Because that is the first contact of the child.

3 .Personality and Character development :
 The home assists in laying the foundation for personality
and character development of a Child.
 The success or failure of an individual depends on the type
of social take off acquired in the family setting.
 The child is trained in language, positive character,
intellectual knowledge, vocational skills.

SCHOOL DEFINITION:
According to John Dewey;
“School is a special environment where a
certain quality of life and certain types of activities and
occupations are provided with object of securing
child’s development along desirable lines”.

INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL IN SOCIALIZING THE
CHILD :
 The School is another important
agent of Socialization
 It Socializes the child, gives him
opportunity to magnifier his
* qualities
* potentialities
* capability
* Instincts
* drives
* motives
and helps to develop his personality.

1. Development of discipline:
 During the process of education , the child’s personality
develops under the impact of the other personalities with
whom he comes in contact.
 In the school, the child is disciplined, he is aware that
disobedience brings immediate punishment .
2. Determining status and role of child:
 Apart from the teacher, the child is also influenced by the
schoolmates or groups.
 These mates or groups plays a significant role in
determining the status and role the child will occupy in
society later in life.

3. Development of social skills:
 The development of social skills is crucial in allowing
children to learn to function as member of society.
 Schools encourage children to mingle and work with one
another .
 From this, children learn how to interact with others .

4. Broaden their understanding:
 It also helps children broaden their understanding of how
different people are, from their home lives, to their goals, to
the way each individual act .
 Teachers , librarians, classroom assistants, and
administrative faculty all act in some sense as role models
for the children in the school .

RELIGION DEFINITION :
According to Macklver and Page;
“Religion as we understand the term implies a
relationship not merely between man and some higher
power”.
According to Ogburn;
“Religion is an attitude towards superhuman
powers”.

INFLUENCE OF RELIGION IN SOCIALIZING
THE CHILD :
 Religion plays a very important role in Socialization.
 Religion instills the fear of hell in the individual so that he
should refrain from bad and un desirable activities .
 Religion not only makes people religious but socializes
them into the secular order .

1. Religion as an integrative social force:
 Religious rituals like weddings, child dedication, and
funeral and birth day celebration teach children about their
tradition and the reason behind them .
 Identification with a particular religious group , gives the
individual a sense of belonging .

2.Religion provides society with a positive framework:
 Religion provides society with positive framework to
manage frustrations and miseries.
 For people who are sentenced to many years of
imprisonment, religion provides the needed hope for a
better future .
 People who are hopeless and unhappy find support in
religion .

PEER GROUP DEFINITION:
A peer group is a social group whose members
have interests , social positions and age in common .

PEER PRESSURE DEFINITION :
Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a peer
group, encouraging individuals to change their
attitudes, values, or behaviour in order to conform to
group norms .

INFLUENCE OF PEER GROUP IN SOCIALIZING
THE CHILD :
 Peers are extremely important when it comes to
socialization.
 Peer groups gives us opportunity as children to form
relationships with others on our own terms, plus learn
things without the direction of an adults .

1.Negative peer pressure :
 Drug abuse is an illustration of the dangerous negative
effects that peer pressure has on adolescents.
 According to Lamsaouri;
“Members of the same group (Peers) overuse of
drugs due to peer pressure. However, when it comes to
addiction, no one is responsible for anybody else.

2. Positive peer pressure :
 Peer pressure may also be positive ;
Example ; Your teen’s friends tell him he should study
harder so he can get better grades .

MASS MEDIA DEFINITION :
The Mass media are the means for delivering
impersonal communications directed to a vast
audience.

INFLUENCE OF MASS MEDIA IN SOCIALIZING THE
CHILD :
 Mass media is a powerful socializing agent today, more
than ever before due to its ubiquity .
 It is the true one because now children are spending more
time in front of television than mingling with their parents
and other family members .

1. Role of Television :
 The mass media of communication particularly television,
play an important role in the process of socialization .
 Children have been dramatically socialized .
 Television is an influence on children from a very young
age and affects their cognitive and social development .

2. Role of Social media :
 Interaction between people in virtual communities and
network in which they share, construct and swap ideas and
information.
 Children spend most of the time in social medias by
chatting
 Through this media they can share many information and
make them trending .

# A place where individuals socialize in accordance
with its expectations .
# Learning to behave appropriately within
occupational setting is fundamental aspects of human

INFLUENCE OF WORKPLACE IN SOCIALIZATION :
 The workplace is an agent of Socialization .
 A new job brings with it new norms and values, includes

# What equipment to use

FOUR PHASES OF WORKPLACE IN SOCIALIZATION :
 Socialization in workplace involves four phases ;
# Career choice
# Anticipatory Socialization
# Conditioning
# Continuous commitment

Socializing training on workplace :
# Some provide formal training in the forms of
apprenticeship , orientation session, and training courses .
# As individuals interact with their Co –employees and
boss ,they are oriented into the Organization .
