Intro:
The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited HF-24 Marut fighter-bomber was built in India,
based on a design by Kurt Tank, famous for his Focke-Wulf aircraft built for Germany
during WWII. The Marut featured a small swept wing and excellent maneuverability.
It had limited combat potential because of the low engine power, and could barely
reach supersonic speeds in level flight. The first prototype flew on June 17, 1961,
with a total of 147 aircraft built, including 18 two-seat HF-24 Mk 1Ts.
The aircraft for today is the HAL HF-24 Marut aka the Spirit of Tempest which
served the Indian Air force as their fighter and bomber aircraft back in the 1960s.
The HAL HF-24 Marut was designed and developed by HAL (Hindustan Aircraft
Limited) with the lead designer of the project being a German aircraft engineer
named Kurt Tank. The HAL HF-24 Marut holds the title for being India’s very first
fighter jet as well as the first Asian jet as well that not only underwent successful
tests but also in service with an air force.

Here are some interesting facts to know about the HAL HF-24 Marut:
- The fighter jet completed its maiden flight on 17th June, 1961

Strength: The third pre-production aircraft fitted with an afterburning Bristol Siddeley Orpheus
703 with 18% boost at 5,720 lbf (25.44 kN) thrust.
Weakness: As the particularities of a given airframe are typically heavily dependent on the
engine used, the inability to improve the Marut's powerplant damaged its performance.
Despite experimentation with various engines, the Marut was never able to achieve supersonic
speeds, which was viewed as a major failure.
Opportunity: Indian planners anticipate that any future war with Pakistan will be a
high-intensity, short-duration affair (partly because of diplomatic intervention by
third parties). Consequently, the IAF is developing a powerful tactical strike force to

Threat: The Marut belongs to a much older era of design philosophy when the fuselage and
