2. Road Marking Perform an important function of
guiding and controlling the traffic on a Highway.
The Marking Serve as a Psychological Barrier and
signify the delineation of traffic path and its lateral
Clearance from traffic hazardous for Safe movement
of traffic.
Road Marking are indiscipline to Ensure orderly flow
of traffic and as well as its also Promoting ROAD
SAFETY.
3. WHAT IS ROAD MARKING
Road Marking Defined as a Lines, Patterns,
words or other devices, expect signs, Set in to
Applied or attached to the carriageway or
kerbs or to object within the carriageway for
controlling, warning, guiding and informing to
the road users

9. REFLECTIVE PAVEMENT MARKERS (ROAD STUDS)
Road Studs Shall be Provided to
improve the visibility in night time
and wet weather condition.
These shall be prismatic retro-
reflective type confirming to ASTM
D4280.
Its Provided on curves and
approaches bridges, approaches and
junction influence.
10. MARKING PROCEDURE
The surface to be marked shall be thoroughly cleaned of all dust, dirt, grease,
oil and all other foreign matter before application of the paint.
Marking shall be done to the required line and length.
Thermoplastic paint shall be heated to the required temperature and it should be
applied on road surface along with glass beads.
The rate of application of glass beads shall be of 250 gr. / sq.m.
The finished line shall be smooth on sides, ends and parallel to the general
alignment of the carriageway.
The upper surface of the line shall be level, uniform and free from streaks
13. CLASSIFICATION OF MARKINGS
A. Carriageway Markings
i. Longitudinal Markings
ii. Marking on Intersection
iii. Marking at Hazardous
Location
iv. Marking for parking
v. Word Message
B. Object Marking
i. Object within the
Carriageway
ii. Object adjacent to the
carriageway
iii. Marking on Kerbs
16. CENTRE LINE
On undivided two roads, centre line separates the
opposite streams of traffic and facilitates their
movement.
On Urban roads less with less then four lane or on
those roads having four lanes and on which parking is
permitted thus reducing the operational width, the
centre line consisting of a single broken line 150mm
wide of 3 m segments and 4.5 m gaps. On curves and
approaches gap shall be 3m
19. WARNING LINES
Warning lines are used in lieu of centre lines and lane line at
hazardous locations like approaches to intersections and sharp
curves, obstruction approaches.
The width of warning lines are equal to centre line or traffic
lane line immediately preceding it
21. BORDER OR EDGE LINES
The Border or edge line at desirable locations
Where shoulder is paved and is of similar texture and color to the
main carriageway.
In advanced of and near narrow bridges and around sharp curve
Where obstruction on the shoulder are close enough to constitute a
hazard
On Pavement width transitions.
On heavily trafficked two and three lane where head lamp dazzle is
sevre.
23. BUS LANE MARKING
The Lane reserved for buses, without physical separation should
be provided with white line as bus lane marking on carriageway.
Generally a basic width 3m is required for bus lane.
Where a bus lane commences just beyond an intersection,
adequate length should be left for the taper to commence at the
intersection so that the inclined line does not across the
intersection mouth.
Similarly to allow traffic to position itself correctly on the
carriageway, the continuous bus lane should be end in advanced
of any intersection with major left turning flow.
29. STOP LINE
Stop Line indicate the position beyond which the vehicle
should not be proceed when require to stop by traffic police,
traffic signals, or other traffic control devices.
Stop Lines shall not be used unless traffic control by any of
these mentioned above.
Stop lines should either be parallel to the intersecting
roadway or at right angle to the direction of approaching
vehicle.
31. GIVE WAY LINES
The Give way line marking consist of two broken lines laid
side by side, each comprising 600 mm line segments and 300
mm gaps.
The line are 200 mm wide and are spaced 300mm apart.
Generally The marking is laid across, the minor roads at
intersection which are not controlled by the traffic police,
Traffic Signs or Signals.
34. PEDESTRIAN/ZEBRA CROSSING
Crossing of the carriageway by pedestrians, only at the
authorized place minimized the confusion .As a Result of this
number of Pedestrian casualties has been reduced
Pedestrian Crossing shall be provided at important
intersection where conflict exits between vehicular and
pedestrian movements.
The site should be so selected that pedestrian are subjected to
minimum inconvenience and vehicular traffic too is not
interrupted very often
66. Kerbs shall be painted with either alternating black and white
strips 500 wide or a Chequered black and white design of the
same width
In order to ensure the conspicuity of road markings, median
side edge line shall be placed at least 350 mm from the vertical
face of kerb.
Chevron marking shall be provided for all entry/Exit and shall be
in continuation of shoulder edge line. Diagonal marking shall be
provided in case of opposite stream of traffic.
