Selected Achievements (by Functional Expertise)
Project Management
• Responsible for the delivery of 4 to 6 Fleet Time Maintenance Periods per year on ‘in-service
platforms’. Managing comprehensive work packages, liaising with sub-contractors, diving
authorities and Insurance Assessors whilst maintaining the platforms at 48 hours notice for sea
and to ISO 9000 Quality Assurance. This involved planning and managing approximately 400 line
items and integrating these with emergent work, and Emergency Docking Periods all within
limited timescales of 6 weeks and managing a budget of £250,000.
• Awarded the Portsmouth Naval Base Commander commendation on three occasions for the
planning and management of the emergency docking procedures for the Royal Navy Flagship
HMS INVINCIBLE, HMS LANCASTER and HMS IRON DUKE and successfully project managing
the Docking Work Packages.
• Senior Engineering Officer in the Falkland Islands, responsible for immediate and constant
engineering support to the Falkland Islands Guard Ship. Managing a team of 12 Royal Navy
Engineers, utilising limited workshop facilities and liaising with local manufacturers achieved
ISO9000 quality defect rectification and Planned Maintenance Support periods.
Training and Development
• Lead Instructor for the Auxiliary Support Equipment at the Royal Navy School of Engineering
responsible for the construction of lesson plans, management and development of the Course
Instructors and planning the statement of requirement for the Royal Navy. This allowed efficient
delivery of training to approximately 600 students per annum at levels of accreditation from City
&Guilds to National Diploma and Foundation Degree level.
2. • Identified the training shortfall in the Marine Engineering Department on the Royal Navy’s
Flagship HMS ARK ROYAL and devised a training plan to ensure that all 153 members of the
department had completed their mandatory training. This was completed over a 12 month
operational period and delivered maximum operational capability to the Command at all times and
ensured that all individuals were at their correct level of competence and personal
development.
• Accountable to the Senior Naval Officer in Portsmouth and responsible for the introduction of the
Fleet Personal Change Programme implemented throughout the Portsmouth Flotilla involving
approximately 250 personnel over a 12 month period. This involved delivering guidance,
leadership and direction to 14 Marine Engineering Officers on various military platforms during
operational and upkeep/maintenance periods.
Personnel Management and Development
• Required to deliver sustainable branch development for 3500 individuals. This required
determining career strategies and incremental pay structures to enhance personal development
and deliver sustainable qualified personnel to deliver operational capability at all levels of
engineering requirement. This was achieved with a radical review of the existing Branch
Structure over a 12 month period and liaising closely with Recruitment Agencies, Training
Authorities and Engineering Institutes.
• Deliver operational engineering assurance to Fleet Command. Conducted a complete review of
Engineering Requirements over a 6 month period to determine the minimum mandatory
competences and engineering qualifications for every engineering individual on every platform.
This identified training shortfalls which were then rectified by defining the Statement of Training
Requirement for the Royal Navy’s Marine Engineering Department.
