• July 24th is Pioneer Day, which is a
holiday that commemorates a day in 1847
when the first Mormon settlers entered the Salt
Lake Valley (Pew Research. 2009).

• In Utah, the Mormon population makes up
about 58% and then 1.7% of the United States'
population of Mormons

the most members of the Latter-Day

4. H I S T O RY
• Joseph Smith received a vision from Angel
Moroni in New York in 1823 about
golden plates in a nearby hill
• He translated the plates to English 4 years
later and they became the Book of
Mormon, which is where the term
Mormon comes from.
• Moved to Ohio and gained following,then
to Jackson county, Missouri.
• 1839 - Smith built a new city
called Nauvoo in Illinois

• Smith and his brother murdered in Illinois on June
27, 1844
• Brigham Young became the second President of the
Church
• Young led a migration to Utah 1846-1847
• 1852 – Utah denied statehood after the
pronouncement of the church's belief in polygamy
• 1877 – Young died and succeeded by John Taylor
• 1890 – Taylor's successor WilfordWoodruff
announced the church's abandonment of the practice
of polygamy in order to conform to U.S. law

• They are distinct entities – tritheism (rather than
a triune Godhead as in the traditional

of Israelites which came to America before the time of
Jesus
• The prophets in The Book of Mormon were similar to

• The rituals of the Mormon faith include ceremonies
performed in the temple endowment,baptism of the
dead,celestial marriage and family sealings plus
several ceremonies that take place in Mormon
chapels.The naming and blessing of infants are
performed by a priesthood holder,often the baby's
father and takes place in the chapel.
• Practices:Abstinence from alcohol,tobacco,coffee

temple garments under daily clothes;active
evangelism

• Baptism in Mormonism,requires some
preparation on the part of the person about
to join the Chruch.Mormons allow those
eight and older to be baptized.Mormons
believe that children are able to pray to
God for a personal testimony of God and
Jesus Christ and not just depend on the
testimonies of others.
• They receive instruction in how to do this
both at home and at church and are
expected to pray for that testimony prior
to their baptisms.

• Mormons believe salvation is gained through a combination of grace and works (Kerns.
