2. WHAT IS JOULE- THOMSON EFFECT ?
# Change in temperature of a gas occurs when its
pressure changes suddenly through a valve or
porous plug.
# This phenomena was first observed by James
Joule and Thompson in 1852. Hence it is called
JOULE-THOMSON EFFECT
Dr. C.V. RAMAN UNIVERSITY ,KOTA,BILASPUR (C.G.)
5. CONDITIONS FOR JOULE- THOMSON EFFECT
# System should be insulated
# It is an adiabatic process
# Exchange of heat, Q=0
# Pressure should fall rapidly
Dr. C.V. RAMAN UNIVERSITY ,KOTA,BILASPUR (C.G.)
6. MATHEMATICAL FORMULA FOR JOULE –THOMSON EFFECT
H = U + PV
H= Enthalpy
P= Pressure
V= Volume
U= Internal Energy
# Total enthalpy of the real remains constant.
Dr. C.V. RAMAN UNIVERSITY ,KOTA,BILASPUR (C.G.)
8. APPLICATIONS OF JOULE-THOMSON EFFECT
#In refrigerator as cooling
# In petro-chemical Industry used to
liquefy the gases
# In cryogenic engines to liquefy
nitrogen and oxygen gases
Dr. C.V. RAMAN UNIVERSITY ,KOTA,BILASPUR (C.G.)
9. CONCLUSION
# It describes the enthalpy of the
gases.
# It supports the principle of
conservation of energy
# Heat-Pump engines are developed
due to this effect.
