Editor's Notes
Good noon all of you. My name is Smita Gadhvi. I am the Phd scholar of batch 2022. I am will be presenting today on the topic MLA handbook on updates changes in 8th and 9th Edition.
It makes it easier for readers to navigate and comprehend a text through familiar cues that refer to sources and borrowed information.
Using MLA Style not only helps your instructors read and understand your work, but the act of creating citations and citing sources helps prevent plagiarism.
It’s a guide-to cite sources within the language arts, cultural studies, and other humanities disciplines.
To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas.
5. to ensure consistent use of the English language in academic writing;
6. to ensure consistent formatting and presentation of information, for the sake of clarity and ease of navigation; and
7. to ensure proper attribution of ideas to their original sources, for the sake of intellectual integrity.
So, today we are interested in what were the changes made in the 8th and 9th edition I hope my screen that is shared is visible to you. Students, teachers, professors, and anyone who works with words will want to know about the updates offered in the new MLA 9 Handbook, which was released in April 2021. The ninth edition builds on the Modern Language Association’s long-standing authority on source documentation guidelines and continues MLA’s dedication to promoting information and digital literacy, which are crucial in today’s world. With the updated guidance of MLA 9, we learn how to accurately and informatively cite everything from novels to song lyrics to dissertations.
The MLA Handbook is the definitive resource for writers at a range of levels and positions, but not everyone has the time or means to access and read the new edition in its entirety. Here I will find a summary of what you need to know about the latest writing and citation guidelines from the professionals at the Modern Language Association and how this edition differs from the eighth.
Today we cite everything from a variety of sources so every 4 to 5 years as there are changes in sources the MLA new edition comes in with new updates to guide us better.
The MLA 9 Handbook contains significantly more content than its predecessor, the eighth edition, which was released in April 2016. MLA 8 has 146 pages, whereas MLA 9 has 367. The increased length is explained by the following added chapters: A chapter on formatting an MLA style paper.
The container is what “holds” the source. It is also known as where you have accessed this information,. • The title of a container is almost always italicized and followed by a comma. • Sometimes sources can have more than one container. It has written 10 pages on containers. If the container is part of another “larger” container – for example, if you were to cite an episode of a television series which you access on Netflix – you would include the larger container (Netflix) after the smaller container (the TV series). • Apps (like the Hulu or the Spotify) and databases can be containers, but not always.
Adding a dictionaries to a work cited has become more complicated –how the word is used and definition. Content means the noun and 4 is the definition you used suppose amount a content specified. The amount of sulphue in coal so that makes it much more specific.
MLA uses seven principles to guide the use of inclusive language in order to be respectful of others without exclusion or bias. These principles are guidelines only, it is up to writers to consider the context and audience in order to make a judgement about the language used.
The MLA 9 Handbook contains significantly more content than its predecessor, the eighth edition, which was released in April 2016. MLA 8 has 146 pages, whereas MLA 9 has 367. The increased length is explained by the following added chapters: A chapter on formatting an MLA style paper.
29 pages on titles
Quotations within titles
Punctuations with titles
Its 2 and a half times longer so I scaled it in graphics
While chapters in the books are likely to be frequently used in your paper this gets little attention in the 9th edition. Lumped in with “introductions”, “prefaces”, “forewords”, “afterwards” and “essays”. So the sources that you are likely to be using.
In its publications, the MLA generally does not use the plural pronoun they (or their, them, and themselves) to refer to singular nouns. While the singular they is not uncommon in spoken English and in some informal contexts, in formal writing it is best to reword for agreement in number.
MLA allows writers to use singular they when preferred by an individual or to help avoid exclusionary language. In cases where it is not the subject’s preference, singular they is less desirable than using a plural subject. In addition, avoid making assumptions about the readers identify, beliefs, or background in your language.
In 9th Edition have you experience art, painting, sculpture is very important. So did you see the art in person? Did you see the art online? All are cited differently depends on how you saw it.
While avoiding citation of sources you are likely to use in your paper such as Wikipedia, YouTube, TED Talks then which are the sources you are unlikely to use such as-billboard advertising, museum wall, texts, books singed by authors ,digital monograms, supplementary data sets both published and along with the set
