Hannah created a feminist fanzine over three weeks. In week one, she designed the front cover, contents page, and began articles on feminism definitions and the 1900s. Week two saw her complete articles on movements in feminism, influential women, and interviews. In week three, Hannah added a missing article, designed book covers, and finalized page numbering and layout. She enjoyed the project and views fanzines as a format for her future work.
2. WEEK ONE
On Monday morning I set to making my front cover. This would consist of a very basic design. There are two
background colours on the front cover, even though it is plain it is also very simple. I have aimed to make my
fanzine have a colour theme of pastel colours, straight away you can see this from my front cover. Looking back, I
was very unsure where to place certain things, like the illustration and the title. After a long duration of trial and
erroring I came up with the design to be on a slight slant, to get my pastels colours involved in the front cover I
created a rectangular box and placed it behind my illustration. At this moment, I felt it looked boring and plain. I
came up with the idea of having speech bubbles for each of these women in the illustration. I think this makes it
look simple yet detailed. I asked my friends in class and some of my tutors on what I could do to make this front
cover better and they said about the women being in more pastel colours as the colours which they are originally
coloured in look out of place and weird. This is something which I will edit when I revisit the front cover. I then
moved onto making my contents page, I stuck to my original plan, with a light yellow box behind my text and my
black text. I had completed this in next to know time but I felt it still looked a bit plain, I decided I needed to have
little arrows to act as if it’s a bullet point. I think this was a very good idea as once I completed my pages, they
didn't look as plain anymore yet they still fitted in with my pastel colour theme. By the time I had finished this it was
lunch time, after lunch I planned on creating my definition of feminism illustration and then place all this into a five
page InDesign document. After lunch, I got straight back on making my feminism definition. It was rather tricky to
make the fists at the bottom of the page to begin with, I wanted to make sure they were all similar with the same
creases and the same level of detail but after a while I got rather tired looking at the computer screen drawing all
these little lines for the creases in the hands. It took me about 2 hours to complete three hands, so in the end I
duplicated the layer twice and just changed the nail colour. The only thing which I would like to change about this
illustration is to have a background behind the text and
the illustration because you can barely see the definition of feminism because of the pastel blue. When I finish all
my production I will go back to this illustration and trail and error different things to see what looks best. By the time
which I completed this, there was just a perfect amount of time to add everything into a InDesign document which
would help me further down the line when I put all of my fanzine together.
I think today has been a very productive day, for the first day of production I have created the first section of my
fanzine.
On Wednesday, I will layout my ’Feminism in the 1900’s’ article and find some images for that. I will also try start
3. On Wednesday, I quickly recapped what I had done yesterday and what needed to be done
today. Over my day off I kept thinking about how I could change my front cover to make it look
more appealing and for it to match the pastel colour theme. I decided to look at my idea
development PowerPoint to see what colours I had picked out from there. After I had changed
some of the colours, I started playing about with different techniques. Last year, I learnt how to
add a 3D effect onto an image. I decided to try this out on my illustration, this worked out really
well and gave my front cover a new sense of life. I then set on creating my ‘Feminism in the
1900’s’ article. This started out really well and it was soon finished in next to no time. To add to
the graphics side of my fanzine, I have created a timeline which will go at the bottom of this
article. I have just created the components today but it needs a bit more detail. Tomorrow, I will
start making some more graphics which will go at the start of my fanzine where the 1900’s
articles are going to go. After creating this, I will also start to create my fact file on influential
women. I think overall today was really productive as it has given me a starting point to what my
articles are going to be like as well as having a complete front cover which I am proud of.
WEEK ONE
4. On Thursday, I started to create some of my graphics for the 1900’s segment of my fanzine. I have created 4
infographics all together which different facts on each page which represents the illustration. I really liked each of
these graphics, they all work really well with my colour theme but they are also very relevant to the world these
days. It took me a while to make all four of the graphics but after a bit of concentration, I managed to complete
them all in 2 and a half hours. In the half an hour which I had left I started making a start on my fact file, I
managed to add all my text into my InDesign layout before the end of the day. For Monday, I need to add the
background and some images and then this article will be finished. I will then start on my musical theatre article,
my movements in feminism and create a rustic background for my 1900’s article.
On Monday, I wrote a list of everything which needed to be completed this week so that on Thursday I can add
everything into a template and start to improve. I began with my 1900’s article, I found a old rustic newspaper
background, I then edited this on Photoshop to make it lighter and to have an orange tint into the background.
This worked really well as a background as my text still stood out. However, I had a bit of trouble with the timeline
at the bottom of the pages, whenever I exported it without a background it would come have a white background
behind it. This is something which took me a while to figure out, in the end I ended up taking a segment of the
background and placed that behind the timeline in the Photoshop document and then exporting it. This worked
really well. After I finished the 1900’s background I exported it and finished my fact file, I chose to have a purple
pastel colour background and got various images from the internet of each influential woman which I
had wrote about. Once. I was happy with this layout I exported that. By the time I had finished two articles it
was lunch. After lunch, I started to create my musical theatre article in InDesign. Originally in my planning I
had changed the orientation of this article so it mixes the fanzine up instead of having the same layout
throughout the whole fanzine. However, after I had finished the layout of this (in portrait) I then realised that I
had planned for it to be landscape- I had to start this all over again. Once I had completed this, it looked really
effective. I found some images to add onto this article and it was completed. By the end of the day, this was
now exported.
WEEK ONE/ TWO
5. On Wednesday, I started my Movements in Feminism article, this was very easy to complete because it was just a
double page spread with two images on from the internet. I had no major problems with this article as it all went
smoothly and in next to no time I was on making my snapshot of 2017 and 2018. To do this I needed to find extra
information on some of the events. My plan for this double page spread was to have a event for each month of the year,
at first I tried this but there wasn’t enough space for all 24 events- instead I decided to choose the most important events
which have happened over the two years. This ended up working really well. After I found more information out and
collected all my images I added all of this into my InDesign document, added a background and exported my document.
Lastly, I managed to create my interview pages for my fanzine in the lesson today. To make my work look more creative,
I got a polaroid template of the internet and managed to get photos of each of my interviewees. This looks really good
with the background and it gives it a more professional look to my fanzine. After writing up all of the interview answers
and questions, I started to look back at the all the work which I had completed over the past two weeks and what I would
like to improve. The factor which really stood out to me for what I would like to change is the colour of my text on the
interview pages. I will think about this over the next few days but my plan for tomorrow is to create a back cover and add
all my finished work into my InDesign document. I think today was very productive as I have managed to complete all
my articles in the last two weeks.
On Thursday, I started with my back cover. I knew that I wanted to have an illustration which seemed very confident and
positive. I chose this illustration to the right. It took me quite along time to recreate everything but the hardest bit was the
hair- I wanted it to look like she had dreads in her hair but it ended up looking like swirls in her hair. However, I think this
added to the mood of the model. After creating this illustration I added all my work into the booklet form- this was
generally confusing as I had more pages than the InDesign layout, Dave taught me how to add more pages so that the
layout would work for when I printed the work out. I also forgot that when I exported all my articles and designs which I
created on InDesign I had to export them as pages not spreads, this was the first thing which I corrected. After I had
exported them all over again I placed them in the document but I had one page left to fill. I decided to create another
illustrations to go after the interviews. I created this really quickly and exported it. By my first lesson I had finished my
booklet and printed it off. My second lesson was spent reading through every page and deciding what I would want to
change. In this second lesson I realised that I had forgot to add my ’Movements In Feminism’ article, I also needed to
change the contents page. I decided that I didn't have time to start in todays lesson so I would start on Wednesday.
WEEK TWO
6. WEEK THREE
On Wednesday, I started to work out how to add the article in to my booklet from what I left out on Thursday- to add a
new section you have to add four more pages, this was generally quite difficult to think what I could create for the
other two free pages, I didn't want to create any more illustrations because I felt like there was enough already. I
started to look around online and some feminism articles and one of the articles which I looked at was ‘How books
have helped feminism throughout the years’ this was a eureka moment for me, I started researching the best feminist
books of all time. This was now my new article to fill the two last pages in my booklet- ‘The Best of Feminist Fiction’.
This included 5 books with text explaining each book. I think this is a really good article because now in my fanzine I
have articles which appeal to everyone- fans of musical theatre, fans of history and fans of reading. By the time
which I had finished this article I just had enough time to edit the first page of the contents page, I corrected the page
numbers for my articles which were wrong, I corrected the running order of my fanzine for the first page. I think today
was very successful as I was very stuck on what to make at the start of the day and then at the end of the day I had
finished with just some little edits to do.
Thursday was my last day of production so I started on with my edits for my fanzine straight away. I needed page
numbers on my InDesign document so I had to create a page number for each page and try place it in the same
place on each page, this became very frustrating as it was taking ages and they weren't all in the same place
because of the different sizes of articles. After I had added each page number on I went through to try check that they
were all in the same position, most of them weren't but I didn't have anymore time to spend making them perfect, I
then finished my other side of the contents page with the accurate page numbers, new article and the running order
of each article. I exported this and added it to my InDesign document, this looked really good because it stood out
and made it very eye-catching. I then fixed my musical theatre article because I had repeated myself twice in the
article, this was quickly fixed. I also moved the text on the article to the right because before I couldn't’t get my page
number on the article because of how close the writing was to the border. By the end of my first lesson I had
completed everything. In my second lesson I printed my work off and stapled it all together. I put all my work into a
PowerPoint and then posted it up on my blog.
I really enjoyed this project and I really like the look of my fanzine. This is definitely something which I will keep in
mind for when I am starting my FMP as i think fanzines are really personal and interesting.
