2. This is a quick guide to show you how to connect Excel
to a SQL Server Database
We will connect to a local copy of the Microsoft
Adventure Works 2019 demo database
3. Open a new Excel
workbook
On the Data Ribbon
Click on Get Data
Select ‘From database’
Select From SQL Server
Database
4. On the Data Ribbon
Enter the Server Name
And optionally the
database name
if you leave this blank all
databases on the server
will be visible
(permission depending)
Then click OK
5. Credentials
Here you will provide
your log on details
In this case we are using
a local account, so we
will select ‘use my
current credentials’
Depending on your
setup you may need to
provide alternative
details to connect
Click Connect
6. Select the table or view
you want to connect to
Scroll down to the
dataset you want to
connect to
A preview of the data
appears
Then click load
7. Dataset loads into a new Excel worksheet
This data set can now be used within Excel
To refresh the data, just right mouse click and select refresh
