2. Horror films aren't really the most popular film genre that gets released, this could be
because people don’t like being scared, they may get released at the same time as a
popular/blockbuster films, which have a higher budget. It could also be due to what
time of year they are released, for example if a horror is released in January it will
attract less viewers than if it was released in October near Halloween, because people
usually want to see scary films closer to Halloween. The more popular horror films that
have been released are supernatural horrors as you can see in the table below:
3. Horror
supernatural
The budget for the 2013 supernatural horror film
‘The Conjuring’ directed by James Wan, was $20 million.
The domestic total gross for the film was $137,400,141,
overall the film made $117,400,141. this shows that the
Film made a gigantic profit. Therefore, this shows that
supernatural horrors were quite popular at the time, this
may be because it was released only a couple of months
before Halloween.
4. Horror
Slasher
The budget for the 2011 slasher horror
‘Scream 4’, directed by Wes Craven a well known
director and producer of horror films was $40
million and the opening weekend gross was
$18,692,090, this shows that slasher horrors
were not really popular at the time as they made
a loss at the opening weekend. However, its total
life gross is $97,138,686, which shows the film
makes a profit and becomes more popular over
time rather than at the opening weekend. This
film may also have been successful, because
people like to see Wes Craven films.
5. Audience
The most popular horror films are released nearer to Halloween, as more people want to
watch horror films at that time of year. Through my research, I also found out that the
average audience for a horror film will be mostly males aged between 15-24 years old. This
Is generally because males tend to seek action and thrills in a film and females tend to like
Comedy and romance, as it is a lighter entertainment. Not only are females less likely to
Visit the cinema to see a horror film, but horror films are generally written, directed and
produced by men. However, other genres such as comedy and action are a lot more popular
than horror, because people like to watch films with their family's and friends, and they cant go
and watch a horror film with young children and people who are easily scared. So comedies
and action films tend to be the more popular choice.
6. My Decision
Although my research shows that horror films
are not the most popular choice of movie for
audiences, I still plan to make one. I plan to
make a horror film, to influence more people to
watch them.
7. Profits
More popular horror films, such as scream for example, had budgets such as $15,000,000 and
make a total of around about $173,046,664. this shows that popular horror films make a lot of
profit from their films. However, not so popular films such as Chernobyl diaries, have a budget
of less than a $1,000,000 and and make a profit of about $38,390,020. However, horror films in
the early 1950’s and the 1960’s were more popular, as a lot of teenagers went to the drive
through cinema every week to be with friends and for dates.
