Institution Research
Which genres are most profitable? Can you notice any trends at the box office?
Looking at Box Office charts from the past week/weekend the genre that seems to be most profitable is rom/com. For example, ‘No Strings Attached’ is currently placed at number one on the Box Office charts with ‘The Dilemma’ closely following it at number three. However the rest of the chart is made up of mainly action films such as ‘The Green Hornet’ at number two and ‘The Fighter’ at number seven. A trend that could be made from the charts this week is due to the run up of Valentines Day. Rom/Com movies will be more popular at this time due to the fact of Valentines Day.
How much does the genre of horror take on average at the box office? How can you ensure a good return?
Depending on the time of year horror can make a boom at the box office. Typically, horror movies are more popular closer to Halloween, so around October/November. Some of the more popular horror films such as ‘The Exorcist’, ‘ Jaws’ and ‘Hannibal’ are making over $200 million since their releases worldwide. Horror is not the most popular genre because of its intention to scare. Some people don’t feel comfortable with the genre of horror, therefore its takings at the box office may not be as high as say action which has the potential to appeal to a much wider demographic. In order to ensure a good return, the horror film produced must have a relatable and believable plot.
Who tends to produce and distribute your genre of film?
Usually small independent film groups make horror films. However for the bigger franchises such as ‘Freddy’, ‘ Jaws’ , ‘Final Destination’ and ‘ Wrong Turn’, bigger institutions now get involved in the production and distribution. Especially around Halloween time, the horror industry booms and this is when most money can be made from horror. If a bigger institution gets involved then a film can have a sequel almost every year, not to mention countless remakes. The horror genre can be seen as a running cycle and with a big institution helping in distributing the film, the cycle enables money to be made from the franchise and the genre for years to come.
