This document discusses options for distributing an independent horror film with a very low budget. It suggests that Pandora Cinema or Haxan Films may be interested given their history of distributing similar low-budget horror films. Though Haxan Films is very small, they had success with The Blair Witch Project which also had poor video quality, unknown actors, and was marketed creatively through "mischief marketing". The document considers using viral marketing techniques on Facebook or guerrilla marketing by hiding promotional materials in a public park to generate buzz for the film.
Promoting Horror: Viral Marketing and Guerrilla Tactics
1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION WOULD
DISTRIBUTE MY HORROR
FILM AND WHY?
AKA Question 3
By James Brewer
2. WHAT CAN MY HORROR
FILM BE BEST CLASSED AS?
Quite probably a low budged independent film, if for no other
reason than the Budget was about £20. most of which went into
travel costs. So there is no official funding.
Also my actors are not famous and are mostly (completely)
unknown, although 3 of them are in the process of training to
become famous actors
3. WHO IF ANYONE WOULD
BE MOST INTERESTED IN
MY FILM?
Probably an independent company due to the previous reasons I gave, but also largely because the
film has been directed by me, a largely (for the moment) unknown individual with little (no) experience.
If however any company would take the risk to help out this film I would have to say it would be
Pandora Cinema.
They have a history of distributing (as the name suggests) doomsday/thriller horror hybrids. Its
most famous movie was also low budged and has still barely broke even to this day, Donnie Darko.
Another possibility would have to be Haxan films, who are a tiny company of about 5 frat boys in
Florida, but are famous for their involvement with the Blair Witch project, and if they were involved with
a movie like that they would be insane not to hitch onto my movie caravan.
I think rather than diminish my movies name by hooking up with Haxan films I will o independent
for distribution.
4. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN
THEIR WORK AND MINE
The most similar movie produced by a company that could be interested in me has got to be
the Blair witch project, and I'm almost in tears at that truly horrifying realisation.
As well as shoddy camerawork in both movies, the quality fo the video’s are dismal and I
don’t blame that director having to make his own company to distribute the film.
The actors are completely unknown in both movies
However 1 stark difference between our films is that my movie uses the known terror rather
than the unknown terror technique, as I believe it is much more frightening to know what will
happen, when it will happen and knowing you can not do anything to stop it.
Another difference is that I tried to make my movie look professional, the Blair witch project
uses a handheld throughout.
5. HOWEVER, THEY DID HAVE
SOME SUCCESS WORTH
LOOKING AT
It was made with a tiny budget of £60k and multiplied that by 15 in its opening
weekend, and by the end of its UK run it made over 14 Million.
The film itself is dismal leading me to believe the only way it managed to earn
so much is via Satan coming out of retirement to cure humanity with this film or
more likely through a fantastic marketing strategy.
And it was Mischief marketing. Mischief marketing is a type of marketing that
uses highly unorthodox, frequently bold, often humorous (and sometimes barely
legal) strategies for reaching precisely targeted prospects.
Another example of people who sue it are Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
6. HOW CAN I PROMOTE MY
FILM?
Viral, probably Facebook, the new “in” thing for most people, I can count the number of
people I know that don’t have an account of my right hand. So you can guess the results if I post
a few snaps and make a big fuss about it with so called “LEAKED FOOTAGE” on there.
I am expecting a call from Oprah or some other big new show any day now to discuss my
film. But while I wait I could also try some gorilla marketing techniques. Slender man is rather
famous at the moment as he appears in the online games Slender and the arrival. The focus of
this game is to find 9 pages with crudely drawn horror images of a tall man the woods, in the
woods before an evil entity eats you. So my idea would be to post several pages of my own
crudely drawn horror images on the trees surrounding central park and lead the people further
into those woods, and in the centre have a few pages lined up to read my movies title at the end
of my Page path.
