The document includes survey results from multiple questionnaires about music websites, CD covers, and pop videos. Some key findings:
- The music website survey responses came only from 16-20 year olds, indicating teenagers should be the target audience. Half view music websites currently.
- CD cover respondents prefer images with text on covers and a continuous theme. Colors like blue are favored.
- Pop video viewers span different ages but are mostly 16-20. Narrative and performance videos are most popular genres. Recent videos from artists like Jessie J and Justin Timberlake are frequently watched.
1. Questionnaire results
Includes graphs with every question and an
analysis of the graph.
For some of the questions I didn't receive as many answers as I would like as
some skipped those questions. To get as many responses as possible, I will have
to have more time beforehand, to give out the questionnaires to a larger and a
variety of people.
3. Question: Age
This pie chart shows what age range did the questionnaire and here the
range is from 16-20 as it shows 100%. The other ages have a 0%
response. This shows that my results from this questionnaire will be
coming from one age range only. Because of this I will not have a
range of results, making it difficult to create my website. However
because my results came from teenagers, I will now know what they look
for in a website and making them my target audience.
4. Question: Do
you view music
websites?
Only half of the public who filled out this questionnaire view music
websites as the pie chart shows only 50% said “yes”. The other 50%
said “no” showing that not every teenager views music websites.
Because of these results it seems that the current music websites do
not appeal to the public as much especially teenagers. So for my
website, I have to make sure that the website is promoted or
advertised so more people are aware of it and to make sure that
everything on it is useful for the audience.
5. Question: If not, why?
To those who do not view music websites, I have asked them to explain
why. From these results it shows that teenagers do not have time to
view them and the current websites don’t have a wide range of genres
for them. Therefore in my website I have to have a wide range of music
genres so it suits the audience’s taste. Also I have to make sure
that the website is easy and quick to use so they don’t have to spend
a lot of time on the website and still get the information they are
looking for.
If it is for an artist website I will have to make sure that the
information on the site is different and the site gives as much
information as possible, otherwise if the same information can be
found on a social network, audience might not use the website as much
because they have access to it somewhere else.
6. Question: What
do you expect
from a
website?
To make the website suitable for the audience, I have asked them to
tell me what the expect from a website. From the chart it shows that
the audience expect to see “both text and images” on the website.
This is helpful because then the website will attract a larger
audience as 100% said they expected both text and images. Also this
option will give the audience a variety to look at on the website so
overall it will suit to everyone’s needs.
7. Question: Do you like
to see a lot of
information on a
music website?
In this pie chart it shows that 50% do like to see a lot of
information on a website but also 50% don’t like to. Because of
this, it will be difficult to choose how much information will be
needed. Therefore I will be looking at existing websites and then
compare them to see how much information a website would need.
8. Question: What exactly do you
want the information to be
about?
Here the results show exactly what the audience would want the
information to be about on the website. This gives me an idea on
what to include on the website so the audience gets what they want.
However I will add additional information about the artist or music
because then the audience will get as much information as they can
from the site, making it easier for them.
9. Question: What colours do you
expect to see on a music website?
Unfortunately I didn't receive many responses from this question
therefore it will be difficult to make the website suit a range of
people. On the other hand, the results I have gotten tells me that
bright and vibrant colours are what teenagers prefer. If the website is
for anyone older, basic colours will be useful. But because my
questionnaire was filled out by 16-20 year olds only, my website will
most likely be aimed at them, so vibrant colours will be needed. This
is because it will be eye-catching and will persuade them to use the
website.
10. Question: State your favourite
music website
The results show that the audience view different types of music
websites. Some look at the artists official site and others use
actual music websites where they can get a range of music from.
To get more information on what kind of music website I will be
creating and will be the most suitable for my target audience, I
will have to research into depth and look at existing products.
11. Question: Why is it your
favourite website?
To find out more about what website they like and why, I asked
them to explain why it is their favourite. This shows that many
teenagers have different taste on what their favourite website is
and because of this, I will have to make sure that the website
produced will cover as many different sections of a website as
possible.
13. Yes
No
Question: Do you purchase
CDs?
Only 50% of the respondents said that they purchase CDs. This shows
that only half of the audience like to buy CDs and to find out why
some people don't like buying CDs I will have to ask them why. But
as some people do buy them I want to know what attracts them into
buying CDs so then my CD would be suitable for many people who like
that specific genre.
14. Question: What is the reason for not
purchasing CDs?
For people who don't purchase CDs I have asked them to explain
why they don't and here it shows that the price can be a problem.
Therefore I have to make sure that the CD that I produce will
have a reasonable price. Other reason is that they are outdated,
and this is because nowadays there are other ways to get music,
for example through downloading so people might see it as a
reason to not to buy a CD.
15. Question: How often do you purchase
CDs in a month?
Even though some of the audience still purchase CDs, they
don't buy them as often as before. This is shown by the graph
that tells me 100% of respondents purchase only 1-3 CDs in
month. Therefore when I am producing my CD cover I will have
to make sure that my cover appeals to the audience so that
there is more chance of them finding it interesting and
purchasing it.
16. Question: How much would you spend on a CD?
The results show the price range that people will spend on CDs.
This gives me an idea on how much people would expect the price
to be for a CD. So I will try and make sure that the CD is in the
right price range depending on the properties it has.

Question: What do you expect to
find on a CD cover?
Image with no text.
Image with text.
No image, patterned
background with text.
No image, just block colour
with text.
This graph shows that 100% of respondents prefer to find image with
text on a CD cover. The results straight away tell me what the
audience like and dislike, as the rest of the options got 0%. From
this I now know that whatever genre is, there must be an image
(preferably of the artist) and text with the title and/or the
artist’s name.
18. Question: What is your favourite
font style?
To find out what the audience’s favourite style is I have asked
them to tell me so then I have a variety of options to pick from.
I can use these on my CD cover depending on the genre and style.
I have asked my respondents this question because I wanted to
know what kind of style they prefer as this information will be
useful into getting the audience to purchase the CD.

Question: What font size
would be ideal for a CD
cover?
I asked the audience what kind of font size they would prefer o a CD
cover so then they have an input on the looks of the CD cover. I have
done this because then there is more chance of them buying the CD.
However the results show 50% for both “12” and “14” font sizes,
showing that half of the people prefer one size to the other, making it
difficult to choose which one. But because the sizes are similar, I am
considering using the larger size for the title because this is the first
piece of text that they will see. The smaller size could be used to the
other pieces of text which will be in the insides of the cover.
20. Question: What are your favourite colours?
They must be suitable to use for a CD
cover.
These results show what colours the audience would prefer to see on
the CD cover. The colour blue has been mentioned telling me that
most of the respondents prefer this colour. So depending on what the
genre is, I will try and use a shade of blue somewhere on the cover
and making sure it also suits the genre as well. The colour has to
suit the artist as well therefore I will have to look at existing
products to see what the majority of colour used in different genre
and type of artist.

Question : Do you like to
see a continuous theme
throughout the CD cover?
The bar chart shows that 100% of people like to see a continuous
theme throughout the cover. Therefore I will have to make sure that
my CD cover has a theme following. I can do this using similar
colours, same typography, design and layout. By doing this, it will
make the CD more appealing and will persuade more people into
buying it because of its appearance.
22. Question: List your 2 favourite CD
covers
I have asked for their favourite CD covers so then I can get a rough
idea on what they like to see in a CD cover. By looking at these, it
will give me ideas on what I would like my CD cover to look like. As
I don't have many responses to this question, I will only have a
small range of covers to look at. Therefore the my findings will be
limited and it will be difficult to make the cover suit a variety of
people.
24. Question: Age
age 11-15
age 16-20
age 21-25
age 26+
There is quit a big age range of people who have completed this
questionnaire. This is useful because there will be a variety of
videos that I can compare to, to find out what kind of pop video
will be viewed the most. The pie chart shows that the majority of
people who watch pop videos are “16-20”. Ages “26+”don’t
watch pop videos as much which tells me that more young people
watch videos. This could be because they are the main target
audience. However that depends on who the artist is and the genre.

I have asked them if they watch pop videos to see exactly what
percentage of people actually do. The bar chart shows that 70%
of respondents do watch pop videos and only 30% don’t. This
shows that the audience might not always enjoy watching videos,
possibly because they might be only interested in a few.

The graph shows that most people roughly enjoy watching pop
videos and no one either dislikes or thoroughly enjoys it. In
order to find out exactly what they like, I will have to
research into their favourite videos, most viewed videos etc
and see what similarities there are. Then I will try and
apply this to make pop video so then there will be more views
and it will suit many people’s needs.
27. Question: What kind of pop
videos do your prefer?
Types of videos 1st 2nd 3rd
Narrative 3 4 0
Performance 4 3 0
Conceptual 0 0 7
The table shows that most of the audience likes either narrative or
performance types of videos. Conceptual comes 3rd in ranking which
shows that the audience don’t like when the song doesn’t link in
with the video.
Simon Frith’s theory is applied in this question as it asks what
kind of typology the audience like to see in a music video. All of
them prefer narrative and performance typologies. Most videos that
use both narrative and performance elements have a strong and
coherent relationship between them, so the Steve Archer’s theory
is used.

The popular type of genre is hip-hop/RnB. This tells me that most
people like to have bass in their music and like to see narrative
in their videos as this is one of the conventions of hip-hop/Rnb.
Indie and Jazz is quite popular and because of this it shows that
the audience like to listen to a variety of music genre. I will
look into the conventions of hip-hop/RnB to make sure that my pop
video suits the target audience’s wants.

This graph shows what parents and siblings like to listen to. I have
asked this question to get a larger age range so then my video can
try and be suitable for older people. Pop isn’t preferred by older
people as it is shown in the graph, however younger people do enjoy
this type of music. The graph shows that most of them like hip-hop/
RnB as well therefore I don’t have to make many changes in
making the video suitable for them and younger people.
30. Question: List your 3 favourite pop videos
Favourite pop videos
Jessie J- Bang Bang
Justin Timberlake- Mirrors
Michael Jackson- Love Never Felt So Good
Justin Bieber- Confident
Nico vinz- Am I wrong
Chris Brown- Loyal
Nicki Minaj- Anaconda
A Great Big World ft Christina Aguilera- Say
Something
Ella Henderson - Ghost
Ariana Grande- Break Free
Miley Cyrus- We Can’t Stop
Ariana Grande- Problem
Magic!- Rude
There is a range of favourite
pop videos which is very
useful because then I can
compare these videos to each
other and find similarities,
in order to find out what
many people like and don’t
like.
Most of these songs are
current which shows that
younger people are more up to
date with pop videos. This
could be because younger
people are usually the target
audience.
Frith’s theory is applied as
all these videos use narrative
and performance elements. The
videos use illustrative and
amplification techniques to
represent the lyrics. –
Goodwin’s theory.
31. Question: When was the last time you watched
a pop video?

A week ago 3
Few weeks ago 1
This table shows that most people watch pop videos a lot and are
continuously watching videos. It shows that pop videos are also being
produced a lot, in order to keep the audience entertained and to keep
the artist popular. As younger people are being targeted at, artists
release videos knowing that many of them will watch them and share
them, making them popular. Therefore my video could possibly target
younger people in order for it to be viewed a lot.
32. Question: What was the last pop video
you watched?
Last pop video viewed:
Nicki Minaj- Anaconda
Jessie J- Bang Bang
Beyonce- Pretty Hurts
Beyonce- XO
Sia- Chandelier
Eminem- Guts over fear
John Legend- You & I
All of these pop videos have been released recently and this shows that
the audience like to keep up to date with music. This list also shows a
few different types of genres that the audience prefer, making it
easier to find out what the audience would watch and expect to see in a
video.
The music industry create stars to serve a purpose by manufacturing
them to audience needs so they can make as much money from them.
33. Question: How often
do you watch a pop
video in a week?
0 1 2 3 4
week 9+
week 6-8
week 3-5
week 0-2
This chart shows that the majority of people often watch
“0-2” pop video in a week. This is a small amount and
I will have to research and find out why this is. The
audience could listen to music many times but only watch
a video when the song is new and then only view it when
the thoroughly enjoy the video.
34. Question: What is the reason for not
watching pop videos?
Reason:
Don’t find them interesting.
Doesn’t make sense with the song.
Not a fan.
I have asked to explain why some people don’t like
watching pop videos. The reasons show that some pop videos
might not be suitable for the song or they just don’t
particularly enjoy them. Therefore I will have to find out
what they do enjoy and add this to my video and also try
and avoid anything that could be seen as uninteresting.
