2. The release date, album/song title, image of album cover, artist name, information
about the album, availability, record label
Imagery: Plain background, the main image is the focus of the advert this is
usually a mid shot or long shot of band member/ artist
Colour: Indie magazine adverts are usually colourful and eye catching. The text is
either black of white to be clearly read in the foreground
Text: Capitals for the heading, subheadings are usually in different colours, font
and size to differentiate between the two.
3. I included all the vital aspects which are required on a magazine advert this included release date,
availability, album name, band name. These were essential in making my product look like that of a
real media product, giving it a professional edge. I conformed to this as all the aspects are important to
inform the audience so they can know where to find or buy the music if it has effectively appealed to
them. However, the only thing I failed to include was details about the record label, this may have
effected the overall professional appearance.
The colour of my advert conforms to other similar products as I have used a bright peachy tone as a
foundation colour in the background, despite the image in the foreground being darker I reduced the
opacity so to not have it too harsh and contrasting. It is essential to use similar colour of other media
products of the same genre so the audience can immediately decipher the genre without know much
detail about the music. This makes it quicker to target the correct audience
The text I have used for my band name is bold, white and all in capitals to be read easily and be eye
catching to grab the audiences attention , the other texts are all different sizes colours and fonts so its
easier for the audience to differentiate all the information they are given at once.
4. The background was not kept simple and plain like they conventionally are, instead I
added a map as the foundation of my advert as it links well to my narrative. The main
image is also not of a band member/ artist however, I have used a mid shot of my main
female character and it is the main focus image to attract the audience’s attention. Making
it a bit different is a risk as the audience may not me able to decipher the music genre ,due
to the difference. However, I believe I have effectively used an abstract image which doesn’t
stray too far from the genre conventions.
The person/ band member on an advert is generally positioned centrally faced at the
camera and looking at the audience. However, I have adjusted my own proxemics of my
female as she is turned away from camera/audience, facing the map and holding out a
camera as if to be ‘capturing life’, signifying her happiness. Yet is may also suggest there is
something wrong with the females emotional state as she isn’t interacting with the
audience, this aims to intrigue the audience. I therefore though this would be an effective
use of imagery and meaning.
5. For this example I have clearly abided
by the conventions when comparing my
product to Florence and the Machine’s
magazine advert for their album
‘lungs’. Specifically focussing on the
text I have positioned it in a similar
style with the band name at the top
followed by the album title. All the
other necessary information is lower
down the page getting smaller in font
6. When comparing my product to Lana Del Rey’s advert I have clearly challenged
the image type conventionally used as I mentioned earlier. With the female not
being a band member or artist and positioned facing away from the audience. In
Born to die we can also see the female interacting with the audience as she is
directly looking into camera. Whereas, in my product we are not shown her
emotions and a she is positioned slightly off centre, these could both illustrate her
mental instability. So giving the audience
an insight into the narrative
7. Most digipaks are designed around the strange and alternative indie music,
indicated through imagery
Front and back panels are the main promoters of the CD and capture the audience
The inside of the digipak is used for more information about artists, songs and
albums
They come in many different styles and designs and vary considerably in their
artwork
Front: imagery- is often colourful and relevant to the album or features the
artists, The title of the album and artist
Back: Track list, Album artwork, Record label, Barcode, Artist/ album names
8. I used an alternative image which is fitting with the genre, this was the globe situated
in the females eye, this is unrealistic and intriguing so makes the audience question
why that the artwork is like this/ the meaning behind it. This conforms to the genre as
real media products also incorporate similar abstract images to suit the music type. It
also links well with my narrative so giving my audience an insight
I added necessary information on the back, such as track list and barcode which is
important for the audience’s knowledge. I have put these in the conventional place on
the back cover. It means my product mimics that of a real one such as Arctic Monkeys.
And audience will be able to look for their information in the conventional place.
I used colourful peachy tones which are the same colours from the footage in my music
video on the sunset beach. This makes the digipak bright and vibrant as
conventionally seen. It also means that my product links well with the other products
e.g. music video and magazine to make both artist and album/song identifiable for the
audience
9. My front cover does not feature any artists and you cannot directly tell the image
is of my female character as its an extreme close up of her eye, yet she is pictured
fully using a mid shot on my back cover this challenges the conventional layout.
This again links the music video and digipak through use of character which is
important if the audience has already seen the video. Subverting this convention
and not showing the band is not a necessary decision for me as they do not appear
in the music video and so their image wouldn’t be recognised if put on the front
cover. The digipak focuses more on selling the style of music rather than those
who performed it, this is how I have chosen to appeal to my audience.
The CD is generally kept simple with some information of the band and album yet
I challenged this as I used the circular shape to mimic a globe and so repeated the
use of the map image. I believed this to be an effective use of imagery and shape of
a globe so took to opportunity to subvert the typical use of the CD.
10. When comparing my digipak
to a professional product
from the arctic monkeys it is
clear I have conformed in the
sense of consistency in
colouring. Arctic Monkeys
digipak is all in black and
white and my product has a
peachy tone across all
images. The use of the image
on the CD is also similar
across both products. There
product also uses one main
character who is not a band
member. This suggests that
it is not vital to have the
band member on the cover
as this real media product
was very successful despite
lacking that feature.
