How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
Evaluation question 2
1.
2. In construction with my A2 media project I had the
opportunity to create a music video as well as creating two
ancillary products to go with it. These ancillary products
were the digipak cover and an advert to promote the song.
When the video was finalised the two ancillary tasks would
be combined with the song and act as a marketing tool for
the song. Another way in which the combination of our
main product and ancillary texts is effective is due to the
fact that we constantly used the title of the song as well as
the artist (Chipmunk Flying High) throughout the entire
project; this was so that it showed the audience that there
was a clear link between all three of the tasks.
3. By creating an almost plain album cover and advert it was easy for people to recognise if they
were to ever buy it in stores. A clear picture of the artist on the front meant that fans could
quickly recognise the star and pick the album off the shelves without having to search ages to
find it. For example Michael Jackson's 'This is it', it was clear and people knew straight away that
the style was associated with MJ. Additionally, the grey background used for the advert and the
cd cover shows the audience that it is made for the rap genre because rap artist usually have a
plain background for their album covers which isn't pure white as too many other genre's use a
white background and rap artists want to stand out from the crowd. Also, this shows recurrence
throughout the music video as we have used a relatively plain scenery which not much
happening in the back. However, there are scenes which shows graffiti in the backdrop to
represent the hardcore themes of rap music. Furthermore, the typography of the artist and
album name is also very bold and clear which is suggestive to power and confidence and tells
the audience to go and buy it.
4. On the inside cover of the cd I decided to put an image of the artist and
ratings from vibe magazine etc. The reason for this is because it allows
people to make a judgment about the songs before they've already
heard them and they can decide what song they want to listen to first
when the buy the album. Also, as songs are usually released on
YouTube before they are sold in stores it is more beneficial to audiences
because they know what the songs are like and if they like the whole
album then they are more likely to buy the album and not return it if
they don't. Once again the ancillary texts is very effective because it
makes the artist come across as a cool and laid back person who their
younger fans can look up to and aspire to be like. I also used an editing
technique in Photoshop which is called mosaic which added to
spectacular effects.
5. In relation to the back of the album cover we used a photo which was
professionally taken and we decided to put the track list on the back so
that people buying the album could see what songs were going to be
on the album. We used bold text which would stand out along with the
picture so the audience could clearly see the song titles. Also, the fact
that the song title (Flying High) was feature larger than the other song
titles on the album tells the audience that their is a song about that
specific video which relates to the song. Additionally, the male artist is
feature on all pages of the digipack and the advert, this shows the
importance of his role in the industry as well as his importance to the
songs he creates in his genre (Hip-Hip). When the people see him in the
music video they will instantly recognise who he is from the
advertisement and the album cover.
6. I continued with a similar background on my advert to utilise
a reoccurring theme. I also made sure that our print production kept in
line with the R&B genre. The magazine that I would hope my
advertisement would get published in would be 'The Source', this is
because this magazine is famous for hip-hop and R&B music stories. On
the advert I used large bold typography so that the wording could stand
out and people could read all the relevant information. Once
again, there are still images of the artist on the advert which further
emphasises his importance, unlike a rock band who would feature the
whole band on the advert as well as the advert. An example of this is of
famous bands like 'The Beatles'. Additionally, the reason why I used a
picture of the character with a stern look glaring into the camera is
because it connotes that he is in control and the fact that the audience
can see the emotion on his face also means that they can relate to him.
7. The combination of my main product and ancillary products
are very effective when put together for the reason that they
all look visually the same and people can identify with the
straight away. I also included the same text fonts and black
theme running through the main task and the ancillary task.
I included a
red border
so that it
could stand
out from
other album
covers
Black CD with
wings at the
bottom. This is to
show a link
between the title
and the artist at
the top
This is the spine. The
impact of his was the fact
that people could see the
title of the album without
taking it off the shelves.
8. I used a
conventional
bar-code so
that people
could buy the
song in
stores.
I included the track list on the
back cover so that people knew
what songs would be features
on the album.
I used an image which shows the star
spreading his hands. The effect of this was
so that it looked like he was flying; which
can relate to the song title.
9. Name of the artist
with an effect that
makes it look like a
sticker being
peeled off.
This is the release
date so people
knows what day the
album drops so they
can go and get it
These are the stores
where people can buy
the album from. The
effect of this is so that
people know where it’s
available
These are social media sites
which would be used for
promotional aspects
This is others that will
be on the album.
10. This is the spine which I
created for my album.
Once again I added the
name of the artist and the
song
I also added wings on the
bottom to add to the ‘flying
high’ aspects of my music
video.
Another reason I added a
spine was because it was
convention which was used
by other musicians who
release albums.
