This document provides guidance for planning a practical project. It includes sections for idea generation, research, approaches, techniques, conventions, opportunities and restrictions. The creator has chosen to make a documentary style YouTube video comparing car design over time from the 1970s to concepts for the future. They will film in their garage and driveway using a microphone, camera and tripod. Contingency plans are included in case of issues with locations, equipment or personnel.
2. GUIDANC
E
This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
should cover for a practical project. It
is not exhaustive, but provides some
guidance on stages, types of planning
and documents you should be
assembling. This is not a one size fits
all document, you will need to amend,
rejig and add/subtract sections
depending on what you are making.
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary.
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.

4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Use section to track your process of of generating ideas.
List and discuss the styles, techniques and conventions
that you have identified in your research. Explore how
you could approach the project using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
Make sure you assess the viability of ideas as well as the
potential for them creatively.
5. RESEARCH
Use this to summarise production research and existing
products from your previous investigations. Link this into
you idea generation and development.

6. POTENTIAL APPROACHES
My first idea was to get someone to drive both the cars
out to somewhere and film the driving and still however
my dad had a photo shoot in Lanzarote and my brother
has covid, so I didn’t have a camara operator, so I have
changed my idea to just me in my garage talking about
the cars on my driveway and then when I talk about the
concept cars, I will be sat in my cars to show what in
talking about.
7. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
One camara on a tripod there will be cutes as I move
around the car to talk about different parts of the cars
Voice overs
Still images
8. CONVENTIONS OF YOUR
CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE
YOU ARE WORKING TO
I want the video to look like a factual YouTube video. Ill
film with one car and then move across to the other
9. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
1. It allows me to research a topic I am passionate about
2. I get to work with voice overs for the first time
3. I will develop my video editing skills
4. I get to work with shooting video
5.
10. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
1. I won't be able to film as much as I wanted to
2. I won't be able to develop my interviewing skill for my
FMP
3. I won't be able to work on my lighting abilities
4.
11. FINAL IDEA – RATIONALE
I want to do this idea because I enjoy researching cars
and talking about them. I chose this format because it is
something I'm not 100% great at it allows me to develop
my skills further. I have made 1 documentary styled
peace before so I have a small idea on what I am doing
this also means the I can develop my knowledge and
skills in making a documentary styled peace.
12. FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE
CONCEPT
I want to make a documentary/YouTube styled video
about car design and what its going to look like in the
future. I want to aim for a scuffed top gear but without
the driving. I wat to show people the development from
how cars looked in the 1970s to how they look now to
how they might look in the future.
14. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production:
I am going to make a documentary/YouTube styled video
about how car design has changed over the years and
the future of it. I will aim to make it roughly 5 minuets
long and will be filmed in a mixture of wide-angle shots
of me talking about the cars and close-ups of the cars
with me doing a voiceover about what you're seeing.
I am going to use a microphone, camara and tripod.
15. LOCATIONS
I will film in my garage and driveway. There both
attached to my house if it rains, I can't film in the
driveway but i will just film the other car in the garage.
16. EQUIPMENT
I will borrow a mic and an audio recorder from college
over the weekend which allows me to get all the filming
that I need to get done with the borrowed equipment
finished. Other than that, I have all the other equipment I
need at home.
18. PERSONNEL
CREW: me
CAST: my brother he is available when I need him to help
me with filming he will work for free because he is my
brother,
COST: No food or payment required
21. SHOT LIST - VIDEO
Shot one: slow-moving shot of the Beetle as one long
continues shot cutting away to show some images of the
people and cars I'm talking about
Shot Two: slow-moving shot of the Volvo and as the
beetle
22. AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING
I am going to record a voice over for my project because
I want to have moving and still shots of the cars I'm
talking about .
I will be recording the voice over on my phone and then
i'll import it over the video of the cars where necessary.
No other sound will be in my project although I
am thinking about other relevant sounds to include
24. ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING
I will film my beetle which will show the 70s design
language in cars.
And then I'll show a modern car which will show the
modern way of designing cars and then I will show
photos and videos of one of Mercedes concept cars. I will
have photos of cars that I reference thoughout the
video.
25. LOCATIONS
The site I have chosen is a residential garage (my house)
for both cars in my project.
Clearance/Permissions required: none

26. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Teams kit booking as a
starting point.
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
28. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Covid – if the people who I want to help me film get covid
I won't be able to film the things I want to film – ill have a
backup plan in case someone gets covid
29. CONTINGENCY PLAN. PLAN B
Technical: I will use a camara
Location: garage and driveway
Cast and crew: me
Organisational: I will film close ups of the beetle and
then close ups of the Volvo
