1. Introduction.
Information Storage And Retrieval System is the techniques of
storing and recovering and often disseminating recorded data.
Information in this context can be composed of text ( including
numeric and date data ), images, audio, video and other media
objects.
Early libraries concentrated on arranging books in some
prescribed order on shelves.
Find the document most relevant to a certain Query.

2. What is Information Retrieval ?
The information retrieval system is that part of a communication
system that contains information as input as retrieval produced
information as output, which again acts as input.
The representation and organisation of information items should
provide the user with easy access to the information in which he is
interested.
The term Information Retrieval first introduced by Calvin Moors in
1951.

3. Concept of Information Storage And Retrieval.
Information Storage And Retrieval, the systematic process of
collecting and cataloguing data so that they can be located and
displayed on request. Computers and data processing
techniques have made possible the High-speed, selective
retrieval of large amounts of information for government,
commercial, and academic purposes.

According to Calvin Moors in 1951, " Searching and retrieval of
information from storage according to specification by subject."
According to J. H. Shera, " Information Retrieval is the process
of locating and selecting data relevant to a given requirement."
Oxford Dictionary define Information Retrieval as, " The Tracing
and recovery of specific information from stored data."

Library and information center is to supply right information in
the hands of right user at a right time is also known as

Information Retrieval system serve to match the writer's ideas
expressed in the document with the user's requirements or
demands for those.

and cataloguing data so that they can be located and displayed on

Carrier is something that carries, hold or conveys
something. On the other hand Carrier is something
that carries or store information.
For example :- Film, Magnetic Tape, CD, DVD etc.

Term or Terminology that 's used for to search information
from storage is known as descriptor.
It is known as key words that we use for search
information from a storage device.

C. Document address.
Every document must have an address that identifies the
location of the document.
Here document address means ISBN, ISSN, code
number, call number, shelf number or file number that
helps us to retrieve information.

D. Transmission of Information.
Transmission of Information means to supply any

Information retrieval system uses various
communication channel or networking tools for doing
this.

Acquisition means to collect information from various sources.
It is the main functions of Information Retrieval .

For example :- Sources may be book, document, database, journal
etc.

Second step of Information Retrieval system is to analyse their
acquired information, and this step they may take decision in
this document they collect is valuable or not.

Information is a system for presenting information to the user.
Information should be presenting clearly and effectively so that

In this stage the library authority creates a new file for
storing their collected information, which is ready for

Catalogue is a list of books of one or more library, by

An index is an alphabetical list at the back of a
book saying where particular things are mentioned
in the book.
It is very important tool for the information retrieval.

An abstract is concise and accurate representation of the
contents of a document. It also several as a retrieval
tools.

It is a list of files contains call number and class
number without any specific rules. It also an important
tools for retrieving information.

B. Modern system / Non - traditional system.
Besides some traditional system, in the present time
we also use some non-traditional/modern system for
information retrieval.

Besides the use of machines, man’s intelligence and
physical labour also needed for retrieving information.
Catalogue card, punch card, EDGE notes card, Apache
card etc.

Use of automatic retrieval tools are first introduced in late
1980s.
In this system all the retrieval works are done by the help
of computer and other related modern technologies.
Physical labours of man’s are not important here.
Some of the automatic tools are:

✓ a flexible removable magnetic disk (typically encased in a
hard plastic shell) for storing data.
Internet:
✓ A global computer network providing a variety of
information and communication facilities, consisting of
interconnected networks using standardized communication
protocols.

query into the system.
Queries are formal statement of Information needs, for
example search string in web search engines.
