The story of the Beatles through their discography
eTwinning project
The story of the Beatles through their discography is the last
collaborative activity of our eTwinning project “Travelling in a yellow
submarine”. The work is about The Beatles discography and personal
lives. Since the diamond disc until their last concert.
We have organized groups of students for the different countries and
to work on the different topic. Each school distributed its students
among the four groups and this is the final result.
We have all searched for the information in groups, we have used the
internet to search information about The Beatles. Sometime, we have
worked with the translator, the comic strip has been invented by us.
Each member of the group has performed a different works.
We want to thank to our teachers and students for their contributions
because we know they have been working really hard.
The Beatles is the name of one of the most iconic bands in rock history,
its emergence in the fifties radically changed the way popular music and
rock itself were understood, reaching new groups and completely
revolutionizing the music scene. The Beatles was the first mass band,
their music reached where no group had reached before, causing one of
the best known musical phenomena of the time, Beatlemania and this is
the reason why we want to finish our eTwinning project with this
collaborative activity.
We hope you enjoy it !!!

OUR POSTERS - THE HISTORY OF THE BEATLES - TEAMWORK
2ND GRADE PUPILS FROM CNER - ROMANIA
What did we find out about The Beatles?
Sure, we've all heard of Yellow Submarine or The Beatles, but few know
the history behind the success of this band. Perseverance, talent,
ambition, determination and close connection between the four members
led them to the biggest stages in the world, fame suddenly coming
together.
THE MUSIC
Music is the art of combining sounds and notes simultaneously in an
aesthetically pleasing form for human hearing. Since ancient times,
music has been considered one of the branches of art, being part of the
rich cultural treasures of countless countries. From the perspective of
the Greeks, music is understood as rest and harmony, this caressing it
and aligning our pagan souls with the harmony of its musical notes.
MUSIC IN THE COURSE OF HISTORY
Over time, music has given us countless musical creations based on real
or fantastic facts performed in different musical ways. Music was the
basis for the creation of today's society, influencing the behavior and
personal style of the young listeners of the new generations that have
formed over the years. Due to the differentiation of clothing and tastes,
people were able to find themselves in many stories played in the songs
that caught their attention.
THE SUCCESS OF THE BEATLES
During 1963, the band's records established themselves in the first
place in the British charts. The total number of records sold this year -
two and a half million - was a record in Britain's music history. In April
1963 the third single, From Me to You, appeared.
In May-June, he participates in a new tour, together with Roy Orbison,
and in August the single She Loves You appears (pre-ordered circulation:
500,000 copies). The Beatles craze began in England on October 13,
1963 with a televised appearance at the London Palladium.
The tour in Sweden was a huge success, and in November 1963 - the
Beatles sang at the Royal Command Performance, in the same program
with Marlene Dietrich and Maurice Chevalier. At the end of 1963, the
album With The Beatles appeared (pre-order 1,000,000 requests). A
Sunday Times critic wrote: "They are the greatest composers after
Beethoven."
WE LOVE THE BEATLES AND THEIR MUSIC! :)

The appearance of the band
Composed around the core of John Lennon and Mc Cartney, who
first sang together in Liverpool in 1957, the group grew out of a shared
passion for American rock and roll. Like all early rock-an-roll
personalities, Lennon, guitarist and vocalist, and McCartney, bassist and
vocalist, were largely self-taught musicians. Early composers, they
gathered around them various instrumentalists that they permanently
changed at the end of 19577, the group was joined by Harrison,
guitarist, and in August 1962 Ringo Starr was co-opted into the band
as drummer.
Beatlemania
Beatlemania was something new. Nineteenth-century musicians
certainly caused a frenzy-an example being Fraz List-but before
modern media created the possibility of a collective frenzy. Later, pop
idols such Michael Jackson in the mid-1980s and Garth Books in the
1990s sold an almost equal number of record without giving rise to a
phenomenon that was even close to the hysteria caused by the Beatles.
In the summer of 1964, when they appeared in A Hard Day’s Night, a
film about the Beatlemania phenomenon, the effect of the band was
evident throughout the world, when countless young people imitated
the long hair, humor and ruffled attitude characteristic of the band
members.
The end of an era
The Beatles, after the concert in Candlestick Park, San Francisco, on
August 29, 1966, concentrated their forces in the recording studio. The
new compositions and musical experiments raised their artistic reputation
remarkably while still retaining their huge popularity. However, the group's
financial fate took an unfavorable turn when their manager, Brian Epstein,
died on August 27, 1967.
After that, the band members pursued their individual interests and
met less and less. Their last concert is considered to be the live
appearance on the roof of the Apple studios, in London, in January 1969.
It also appeared compiled in the album "Let It Be".
In July 1969 the band reunited to record the album Abbey Road.
Officially, the Beatles fell apart in 1970, and all hope of a reunion was
shattered when Lennon was assassinated. Thus in 1971 there was no hope
for the return of the much loved band on stage.

The Beatles are well-known rock singers in the 1960s.
One day they decided to take a ride in his famous car, driven by his
manager to go to his friends' concert, which was that day at 5 in the
afternoon. They were very excited because they realized that their
friends had a very good reputation, they were proud. When the fans of
their friends arrived, they went like crazy direct to them (the Beatles),
the Beatles felt bad because their friends lost a bit of fame and they
had enough so they decided to leave.
They felt a little bad for them because they promised to go, so they
decided to call them and tell him what had happened.
-Guys, we have to tell you something.
-Tell us, what happens?
- We have entered your concert and all the
public has asked us for photos and we have
felt uncomfortable and we have left.
Origin: Liverpool, United Kingdom (1957)
Awards: His best known awards are, Grammy for Album of the Year,
for best music video, best pop vocal album, for best new artist
The Beatles were a very famous rock band, from 1962 until April 10,
1970. That day they were separated. On December 8, 1980, ten years
later John Lennon died, assassinated with 5 shots by Mark Chapman.
After John Lennon's death, 17 songs written by him were found.
The origin of these Beatles was Liverpool, England, United Kingdom. His
genre was rock. His most famous songs are:
-It wont be long
-All I've Got To Do
-All My Loving
On July 6, 1957, John Lennon and
Paul McCartney met, and years
later the rock group "Beatles" was
created.
“Please Please Me” was the debut album by British rock band The Beatles
released on March 22, 1963.
Since the release of Please Please Me, the Beatles have grown in
popularity around the world, Half a century later, songs like Twist And
Shout or I Saw You Standing There continue to win over the followers of
the group that maintains the honour of being the highest-selling album in
history, a record estimated at around one billion copies.
The Beatles were the most important and influential band of the rock era.
Not content with being the first British group to achieve worldwide
success, their insatiable creativity led them to evolve by leaps and bounds
from record to record, ahead of all their contemporaries and opening
countless avenues for the future of music without ever losing their
immense popularity. Their impact transcended music until they became
icons of 20th century culture and history.
Such is the repercussion of the
so-called 'Beatlemania' that its
lyrics, which represented the
progressive ideals of the time,
still endure today
Among his most recognized songs are: Yesterday, Yellow Submarine, All
You Need Is Love, Hey Jude, A Day in the Life, Let It Be and P.S. I love
you.
The Beatles made a film project Yellow submarine, an animated feature-
length film. The group began recording music for the former in late April
1967, but the project then lay dormant as they focused on
The Beatles in Marinaleda (An invented story)
Today April 29 the Beatles will go to the natural park to give a great
concert. They are very excited because this is the first time they have
given a concert outside the UK. There are people waiting in line to see
the Beatles sing.
The first day they announced it in 5 minutes the tickets flew and there
are hardly any at the box office. Everyone is very anxious for the arrival
of the Beatles. then they will enter the park and finally they will arrive.
Everyone entered the park and stood in the bleachers of the
fainthearted. The reporters set out to broadcast the concert live for
those who were left without a ticket or could not come can see it. There
are only a few minutes for our singers to appear to give the great
concert of the year. There are people from all over Andalusia, even
Madrid! Our singers are in the dressing room to get ready to start the
concert. Then something unexpected happened:
"Has anyone seen the string on my guitar?" Asks Paul McCartney.
-I haven't seen it, did you keep it in the suitcase? - John Lennon replied.
–Of course John I kept it in the suitcase, did someone come in here when
we went to the restaurant? -Asks Paul McCartney.
-Yes !!! The cleaner entered and a man a little strange with her.-Ringo
Starr.
-Let's go find her and ask her !! .
- George Harrison said. They called his representative to tell him to tell
the public that he had to postpone it for 10 more minutes, due to an
unexpected problem. The Beatles ran to look for the cleaner, they finally
found her, she was cleaning the bathroom! "There it is!"
The four yelled at the same time. "What, what do you want!"
The cleaner shouted, very scared. the four of them told her about her
unexpected problem. the cleaner replied:
-I was cleaning your dressing room as you had asked me, then a very
strange man appeared who told me if he could pass that he was his
representative, he took something and left.- said the cleaner.
"There he is. That man looks familiar to me ..." said the four at the same
time. "I know who Mick Jagger is," said John Lennon. Mick Jagger gave
him the guitar strap, and they were able to celebrate the concert. They
succeeded in the theater and the money raised was donated to an
association of poor children.

The Story Of The Beatles
The influence of "The Beatles" in the fashion of the 60's
The Beatles didn't just change the world sonically, of course. Their style
— on stages, album covers and in their personal lives — proved
pioneering, influencing the closets of not only their performing peers
but also their fans.
Classic costumes
When the band began to gain popularity, they decided to radically
change their image of the stage musicians and they chose a classic
style:jacket, tie, tight pants.
Colorful costumes
Since 1967, when the world embraced the hippie movement, the band "The
Beatles" has also dramatically changed its style: instead of identical
costumes, in front of the audience appeared actors dressed more freely
and relaxed - a spacious bright clothes, with stripes, floral embroidery.
Freestyle
In the 70's, the musicians went to the free and personal wardrobe, each
participant showed their own style.
Hair
As for grooming, they coined the "Arthur" – a textured, mop-top
haircut that looks just as good now as it did then. The reason this look
worked was because it had never been done before. The band actually
got the idea for the cut from an art student called Jürgen Vollmer,
who they befriended in Hamburg at the start of the Sixties.
Accessory
Very passionate about experiments with the image of John Lennon,
he took a fancy hat to the "Breton head" and began to appear
frequently in it even at concerts. Such a lid is now called the Lennon
lid (Lennon's lid).
A special place among the "Beatles" accessories are glasses, which
again link with Lennon.
Their colorful or casual stage outfits, accessorized with elegant ties
or chains, created the fashion of the 60's.

The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. John
Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison started playing in clubs in
Liverpool. The drummer Ringo Star joined them in 1962. Lennon and
McCartney wrote most of the Beatles songs.
The band soon became very popular. They started a phenomenon called
Beatlemania, where fans would scream whenever the band members
appeared on the stage or on TV. In 1964 the Beatles arrived in the USA
and established themselves as the biggest music stars in the world.
Between 1963 and 1970, the band recorded twelve studio albums and
released many popular singles. Their biggest hits included the songs
‘Yesterday’, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’,
‘Help!’, ‘Penny Lane’.
The group split up in 1970. After the split, all the band members
remained musically active and had successful solo careers. The Beatles
sold around 600 million records and are regarded as the most successful
band in the history of music.
FUN FACTS
All four Beatles could play the guitar, the drums and the piano. All of
them wrote lyrics, but none of them could actually read music.
The Beatles had twenty-one number one hits in America and seventeen
in the UK.
Fifteen different albums by the Beatles reached number one in the UK
charts.
In 2014, Rolling Stone magazine crowned the Beatles as the best
artists in the history of popular music.
There are more than 1600 different cover versions of the song
'Yesterday'.
John Lennon's sight was so bad as he got older that he was legally
blind.
The band's first performance in the UK under the name 'The Beatles'
was on 17 December 1960 at the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool.
The longest Beatles song is 'Revolution 9' which is 8 minutes and 15
seconds long. The shortest is ' Her Majesty' which is only 23 seconds
long.
The word that appears most often in the Beatles songs is the word love.
On 4 April 1964, the Beatles held all Top 5 spots on the Billboard
charts (a music chart in the USA). The song 'Can't Buy Me Love' was
number one, followed by the songs 'Twist and Shout', 'She Loves You',
'I Want to Hold Your Hand' and 'Please Please Me'.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BEATLES
(SPAIN, VILLANUEVA DE LA SERENA)
The history behind Liverpool’s most famous songs The Beatles is quite
something. From their first encounters, tours of the world and
subsequent break-up; read on to delve into a brief account of the world’s
most famous band.
Early history & Hamburg residency
Little did we know that the musical world was about to flip on its head
when a 15 year-old Paul McCartney met a 16 year-old John Lennon in 1957.
Lennon, in his skiffle band The Quarrymen, invited McCartney to join the
group on rhythm guitar, with the band later inviting George Harrison and
original bass player Stuart Sutcliffe to join.
Following a string of concerts in Liverpool, The Beatles’ first manager
Allan Williams (original owner of local venue The Jacaranda) arranged a
residency in Hamburg for the band, which would see original Beatles
drummer Pete Best join the band. 1961 saw Sutcliffe leave the band –
with McCartney replacing him on bass. Following criticism, Best would also
be replaced by a young Ringo Starr a year later.

UK popularity & first single
When The Beatles returned to the UK in 1961 after a number of
performances in Hamburg, they were at the fore of the city’s ever-
growing Merseybeat scene. Following a run of shows at The Cavern Club,
they were spotted by Brian Epstein, who would later go on to become the
band’s official manager in 1962. Initially rejected by Decca Records,
Epstein would then sign the band to EMI’s Parlophone label and in June
initiated their first recording session at Abbey Road Studios.
In October of the same year, The Beatles’ first single ‘Love Me Do’
peaked at Number 17 on the Record Retailer chart. The band would return
to Hamburg for their fifth and final residency before returning home
with a new look and a promise to be more serious about their music.
Serious they were, as they would go on to release 12 studio LPs in an eight
year period.
Beatlemania
In 1963, a sharp-suited Beatles would record their first LP Please Please
Me, a roaring success in the UK, peaking at number 1 in the charts.
Extensive European tours followed, with thousands of fans filling the
streets outside venues on a nightly occurrence. The reaction to the band
was dubbed Beatlemania. 1964 saw the ‘British Invasion’, with The Beatles
hitting USA for the first time. The Ed Sullivan Show played host to their
first US television performance, which was a landmark for the band and
was watched by approximately 73 million viewers in the States.
The Beatles’ rapid success and growing fanbase in America saw them hold
the top five places in the Billboard Top 100, which is still a record to this
day. Amongst tours, The Beatles found time to record with A Hard Day’s
Night and Beatles For Sale released in the second half of 1964.
The Beatles would see continued success in America with the first live
music concerts to be held at stadiums, including a show at Shea Stadium
to a world record crowd of 55,600 on August 15th 1965. Playing live finally
began to take its toll on the band after four years of constant recording,
touring and over 1,400 live appearances, with their last performance to
the public at Candlestick Park, San Francisco in August 1966.
The studio years
With no plans for further shows, The Beatles took to the studio with a
more experimental approach to their music. From late 1966-1970 The
Beatles would go on to record and release a further six studio LPs,
starting with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Following the death
of Brian Epstein, cracks in the group’s unity began to show and recording
sessions became difficult with members occasionally quitting and
returning.
Despite this, The Beatles still managed to occupy the top spot with four
of their six releases during this period peaking at number 1 in the UK and
five reaching number 1 in the US.
Tensions continued to become apparent and their final performance was
to be on the rooftops of Apple Corps on Savile Row, January 1969. The
worldwide number 1 album Abbey Road followed later in the year, just
before The Beatles finally broke up in 1970.
Following The Beatles’ break-up, their final studio LP Let It Be was
released on May 8th 1970; now regarded as a poignant finale for the group
which shook the world.

The Story of the Beatles Through Their Discography eTwinning Project

  • 1. The story of the Beatles through their discography eTwinning project
  • 2. The story of the Beatles through their discography is the last collaborative activity of our eTwinning project “Travelling in a yellow submarine”. The work is about The Beatles discography and personal lives. Since the diamond disc until their last concert. We have organized groups of students for the different countries and to work on the different topic. Each school distributed its students among the four groups and this is the final result. We have all searched for the information in groups, we have used the internet to search information about The Beatles. Sometime, we have worked with the translator, the comic strip has been invented by us. Each member of the group has performed a different works. We want to thank to our teachers and students for their contributions because we know they have been working really hard. The Beatles is the name of one of the most iconic bands in rock history, its emergence in the fifties radically changed the way popular music and rock itself were understood, reaching new groups and completely revolutionizing the music scene. The Beatles was the first mass band, their music reached where no group had reached before, causing one of the best known musical phenomena of the time, Beatlemania and this is the reason why we want to finish our eTwinning project with this collaborative activity. We hope you enjoy it !!! THANK YOU

  • 8. 2ND GRADE PUPILS FROM CNER - ROMANIA What did we find out about The Beatles? Sure, we've all heard of Yellow Submarine or The Beatles, but few know the history behind the success of this band. Perseverance, talent, ambition, determination and close connection between the four members led them to the biggest stages in the world, fame suddenly coming together. THE MUSIC Music is the art of combining sounds and notes simultaneously in an aesthetically pleasing form for human hearing. Since ancient times, music has been considered one of the branches of art, being part of the rich cultural treasures of countless countries. From the perspective of
  • 9. the Greeks, music is understood as rest and harmony, this caressing it and aligning our pagan souls with the harmony of its musical notes. MUSIC IN THE COURSE OF HISTORY Over time, music has given us countless musical creations based on real or fantastic facts performed in different musical ways. Music was the basis for the creation of today's society, influencing the behavior and personal style of the young listeners of the new generations that have formed over the years. Due to the differentiation of clothing and tastes, people were able to find themselves in many stories played in the songs that caught their attention. THE SUCCESS OF THE BEATLES During 1963, the band's records established themselves in the first place in the British charts. The total number of records sold this year - two and a half million - was a record in Britain's music history. In April 1963 the third single, From Me to You, appeared. In May-June, he participates in a new tour, together with Roy Orbison, and in August the single She Loves You appears (pre-ordered circulation: 500,000 copies). The Beatles craze began in England on October 13, 1963 with a televised appearance at the London Palladium.
  • 10. The tour in Sweden was a huge success, and in November 1963 - the Beatles sang at the Royal Command Performance, in the same program with Marlene Dietrich and Maurice Chevalier. At the end of 1963, the album With The Beatles appeared (pre-order 1,000,000 requests). A Sunday Times critic wrote: "They are the greatest composers after Beethoven." WE LOVE THE BEATLES AND THEIR MUSIC! :)
  • 11. ROMANIA - BLAGA HIGH SCHOOL, CLUJ-NAPOCA The appearance of the band Composed around the core of John Lennon and Mc Cartney, who first sang together in Liverpool in 1957, the group grew out of a shared passion for American rock and roll. Like all early rock-an-roll personalities, Lennon, guitarist and vocalist, and McCartney, bassist and vocalist, were largely self-taught musicians. Early composers, they gathered around them various instrumentalists that they permanently changed at the end of 19577, the group was joined by Harrison, guitarist, and in August 1962 Ringo Starr was co-opted into the band as drummer.
  • 12. Beatlemania Beatlemania was something new. Nineteenth-century musicians certainly caused a frenzy-an example being Fraz List-but before modern media created the possibility of a collective frenzy. Later, pop idols such Michael Jackson in the mid-1980s and Garth Books in the 1990s sold an almost equal number of record without giving rise to a phenomenon that was even close to the hysteria caused by the Beatles. In the summer of 1964, when they appeared in A Hard Day’s Night, a film about the Beatlemania phenomenon, the effect of the band was evident throughout the world, when countless young people imitated

  • 14. The Beatles, after the concert in Candlestick Park, San Francisco, on August 29, 1966, concentrated their forces in the recording studio. The new compositions and musical experiments raised their artistic reputation remarkably while still retaining their huge popularity. However, the group's financial fate took an unfavorable turn when their manager, Brian Epstein, died on August 27, 1967. After that, the band members pursued their individual interests and met less and less. Their last concert is considered to be the live appearance on the roof of the Apple studios, in London, in January 1969. It also appeared compiled in the album "Let It Be". In July 1969 the band reunited to record the album Abbey Road. Officially, the Beatles fell apart in 1970, and all hope of a reunion was shattered when Lennon was assassinated. Thus in 1971 there was no hope for the return of the much loved band on stage.

  • 17. The Beatles were the most important and influential band of the rock era. Not content with being the first British group to achieve worldwide success, their insatiable creativity led them to evolve by leaps and bounds from record to record, ahead of all their contemporaries and opening countless avenues for the future of music without ever losing their immense popularity. Their impact transcended music until they became icons of 20th century culture and history. Such is the repercussion of the so-called 'Beatlemania' that its lyrics, which represented the progressive ideals of the time, still endure today Among his most recognized songs are: Yesterday, Yellow Submarine, All You Need Is Love, Hey Jude, A Day in the Life, Let It Be and P.S. I love you. The Beatles made a film project Yellow submarine, an animated feature- length film. • 25. Classic costumes When the band began to gain popularity, they decided to radically change their image of the stage musicians and they chose a classic style:jacket, tie, tight pants.

Colorful costumes Since 1967, when the world embraced the hippie movement, the band "The Beatles" has also dramatically changed its style: instead of identical costumes, in front of the audience appeared actors dressed more freely and relaxed - a spacious bright clothes, with stripes, floral embroidery.

Hair As for grooming, they coined the "Arthur" – a textured, mop-top haircut that looks just as good now as it did then. The reason this look worked was because it had never been done before. The band actually got the idea for the cut from an art student called Jürgen Vollmer, who they befriended in Hamburg at the start of the Sixties.

Such a lid is now called the Lennon lid (Lennon's lid). A special place among the "Beatles" accessories are glasses, which again link with Lennon. Their colorful or casual stage outfits, accessorized with elegant ties or chains, created the fashion of the 60's.

  • 32. FUN FACTS All four Beatles could play the guitar, the drums and the piano. All of them wrote lyrics, but none of them could actually read music. The Beatles had twenty-one number one hits in America and seventeen in the UK. Fifteen different albums by the Beatles reached number one in the UK charts. In 2014, Rolling Stone magazine crowned the Beatles as the best artists in the history of popular music. There are more than 1600 different cover versions of the song 'Yesterday'. John Lennon's sight was so bad as he got older that he was legally blind. The band's first performance in the UK under the name 'The Beatles' was on 17 December 1960 at the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool. The longest Beatles song is 'Revolution 9' which is 8 minutes and 15 seconds long. The shortest is ' Her Majesty' which is only 23 seconds long. • 34. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BEATLES (SPAIN, VILLANUEVA DE LA SERENA) The history behind Liverpool’s most famous songs The Beatles is quite something. From their first encounters, tours of the world and subsequent break-up; read on to delve into a brief account of the world’s most famous band. Early history & Hamburg residency Little did we know that the musical world was about to flip on its head when a 15 year-old Paul McCartney met a 16 year-old John Lennon in 1957. Lennon, in his skiffle band The Quarrymen, invited McCartney to join the group on rhythm guitar, with the band later inviting George Harrison and original bass player Stuart Sutcliffe to join. Following a string of concerts in Liverpool, The Beatles’ first manager Allan Williams (original owner of local venue The Jacaranda) arranged a residency in Hamburg for the band, which would see original Beatles drummer Pete Best join the band. 1961 saw Sutcliffe leave the band – with McCartney replacing him on bass. Following criticism, Best would also be replaced by a young Ringo Starr a year later.
  • 35. BOOK THE TRAVEL YOU'VE MISSED The first photo of The Quarrymen | © Ronald Saunders / Flickr UK popularity & first single When The Beatles returned to the UK in 1961 after a number of performances in Hamburg, they were at the fore of the city’s ever- growing Merseybeat scene. Following a run of shows at The Cavern Club, they were spotted by Brian Epstein, who would later go on to become the band’s official manager in 1962. Initially rejected by Decca Records,
  • 36. Epstein would then sign the band to EMI’s Parlophone label and in June initiated their first recording session at Abbey Road Studios. In October of the same year, The Beatles’ first single ‘Love Me Do’ peaked at Number 17 on the Record Retailer chart. The band would return to Hamburg for their fifth and final residency before returning home with a new look and a promise to be more serious about their music. Serious they were, as they would go on to release 12 studio LPs in an eight year period. Beatlemania In 1963, a sharp-suited Beatles would record their first LP Please Please Me, a roaring success in the UK, peaking at number 1 in the charts. Extensive European tours followed, with thousands of fans filling the streets outside venues on a nightly occurrence. The reaction to the band was dubbed Beatlemania. 1964 saw the ‘British Invasion’, with The Beatles hitting USA for the first time. The Ed Sullivan Show played host to their first US television performance, which was a landmark for the band and was watched by approximately 73 million viewers in the States. The Beatles’ rapid success and growing fanbase in America saw them hold the top five places in the Billboard Top 100, which is still a record to this day. Amongst tours, The Beatles found time to record with A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles For Sale released in the second half of 1964.
  • 37. The Beatles would see continued success in America with the first live music concerts to be held at stadiums, including a show at Shea Stadium to a world record crowd of 55,600 on August 15th 1965. Playing live finally began to take its toll on the band after four years of constant recording, touring and over 1,400 live appearances, with their last performance to the public at Candlestick Park, San Francisco in August 1966. The studio years With no plans for further shows, The Beatles took to the studio with a more experimental approach to their music. From late 1966-1970 The Beatles would go on to record and release a further six studio LPs, starting with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Following the death of Brian Epstein, cracks in the group’s unity began to show and recording sessions became difficult with members occasionally quitting and returning. Despite this, The Beatles still managed to occupy the top spot with four of their six releases during this period peaking at number 1 in the UK and five reaching number 1 in the US. Tensions continued to become apparent and their final performance was to be on the rooftops of Apple Corps on Savile Row, January 1969. The worldwide number 1 album Abbey Road followed later in the year, just before The Beatles finally broke up in 1970.
  • 38. Following The Beatles’ break-up, their final studio LP Let It Be was released on May 8th 1970; now regarded as a poignant finale for the group which shook the world.
