Media Evaluation
1. Evaluation:
I setout to make a musicmagazine thatwouldfocus
aroundthe Rock/PopPunkgenre.ThismeansIwould
have a demographicthatisusuallyassociated with
TeenagersandYoungAdults (Ages14-25),and it
wouldhave a verysimilardesigntomagazinessuch
as NME andKerrang. Also,I tookthe lifestyle of the
audiencesintohand,suchasactivitiestheydowhen
out andat home.These included:goingtothe
cinema,seeinglive concertsoften,listeningtomusic,
watchingtelevisionandmovies,usingsocial media
and alsoreadingupdatesfrombandsthatcan be
foundonline,orina magazine. Thiswasthe design
that I setout to make, andfinishedverywell inmy
opinion:
From usingmysurveythatI allowedmultiple people
to answer,itallowedme tohave a goodperspective
on whatpeople wouldwantfrommymagazine and
whoit shouldappeal to.Thiswouldalsohelpme
compare my resultstothe magazinesIaimedto
create mine around,suchas popularmusic
magazineslike:BLUNT,Kerrang,The Fly,ClassicRock,
AcousticandNME. By usingmysurvey,andcreating
questionsaroundthe designsandaudience of these
magazines,Icame up withmyaudience fromthe
resultscollected.The maindemographicformy
magazine will be towardsboys,but;Ishouldstill keep
the female audienceinmindwhencreatingalayout
and coverfor mymagazine.These resultswill also
helpme to determinewhatneedstobe inside of my
magazine aswell.Ialsoaskedthe questionabout
age,and all the answerswere 15 – so I will have to
aimmy magazine a teenagersforittoappeal.From
lookingatthese results,Ican see thata lot of the
audience enjoy:Indie,PopPunk&Rap. By usingmy
surveytomy advantage,Ican appeal mymagazine
directlytomy audience throughthe answersthatIreceived –So that itis successful andattracts
people towardsitlike the mostpopularmagazinesdo.
Aftercompletingall of mydrafts formy magazine cover,Ithenimprovedthemall made them look a
lot neater so that they would look more professional, and in term, appeal to my audience more
specifically.Thisincludedaddingmore effectstotextboxes,aligningheadings and matching colours
so that they would be more pleasant and more appealing to the eye. The further I went into the
developmentof creatingmymagazine, I realised that I was taking in the ideas from my survey, and
2. applyingthemto my magazine; which is probably why the conventions of my magazine fit so well,
and work as a whole. Using my flat plans and drafts allowed me to add extra details from other
magazines that help to make it look neater as a whole, such as adding small banners and in-text
images to make it feel more informational.
I alsowentthroughmy magazinesanddecided tochange the contrastand brightnessof some of the
imagessothat theymatchedeachother better,butalsolookedbetteragainstthe yellowtheme that
I carried out though my magazine, so that the colours from the images did not conflict with the
colourscheme I wantedtoportray. As I stated before, I wanted a white background throughout my
magazine, but when I went through my magazine looking at it in detail, having a plain background
didn’t seem to match what the magazine’s use towards my target audience; so I decided to add
some small details to each of the pages to give the effect that they have a sort of texture that will
not look bland or too plain. By adding many of these features, it would make my magazine seem a
lotmore comparable tothe magazinesthatI mentionedwith my survey. The reason these changed
made this difference is because I used the conventions from these magazines, and incorporated
them in my own, personal way. These changes also as a whole made my magazine look more
professional, and they also seemed to give extra detail and depth to each section that I created.
Moreover, I simply made my magazine look better by completing the pages and making it look
finished, thisincludedaddingsectionsfrommyflatplanthatI wasn’table to improve in my draft, or
that I completely missed out of idea for my magazine. Overall, I believe that by improving and
building upon my magazine, I have been able to complete a magazine idea that is to the best
standardI can make. The onlythingI would change about my magazine would be the key image on
my double page spread, asitdoesn’tinclude all the members of the band (missing the bassist) and
3. was cut-outquite badlyin my personal opinion; although the key image still looks very fitting, and
still works and applies to the structure of my magazine.
