A group of 14 EFL-U
students studying the
foreign language as an
optional were selected
and interviewed on the
methods employed by
them in learning it.The
results showed us some
trend-setting strategies
used by them in picking
up     their  respective
languages.
STRATEGIES
 Foremost trend in the survey
  the most formidable strategy w.r.t language
  learning
 Almost 100% of the participants favoured it.


“'I used to speak a lot in class even when I made
   absolutely no sense at all” – Ayushi Pandey
 95% of the participants agreed that drawing
  parallels with one’s mother tongue helped them
  to make definite progress with the nuances of
  their target language.
 Helped them pick up the quirks of the language.
 Forms a deep understanding of both languages.
 An imperative tool in the language learning
  process.
 Statistics shows that utilisation of the tools
  'parallels with mother tongue' and 'internet' are
  bestowed with the same importance. Equal
  takers.
 Internet is like a ‘Third Mentor’
“No matter what,internet never fails to provide me
  with some kind of a solution.It never lets me
  down”- Ram Nivas.
 The irrefutable emotional aspect that plays a
  vital role in the whole process of learning.
 Primary objective with which one takes up a
  foreign language .

“Whatsoever the reason be, it definitely fuels up
  the process since passion is necessary to learn
  anything”– Sabbah Qamri.
   Most students held that teacher-student interaction
    always leaves a better result in foreign language
    learning.

Malemngnabi Akoijam,surprisingly disagrees ;
‘face-to-face learning is not crucial in foreign language
   studies but it can serve as a definite tool for some in
   the long term‘
 She cited an example of her natives being able to
   speak Korean after watching Korean serials. She
   does stress the importance of group discussions
   however.
   A popular language learning tool for 75% of the
    participants.

   Aids visual learners more

   A pleasure meets work learning tool.
   Plays a huge role in motivating the person.
    Piques the learner’s interest which encourages
    us to learn in a better way.

   Enables learners to relate to the language on an
    emotional level.

   A mode that excludes ‘practical,need to know’
    mode learners.
   Helps the auditory learner more.

   Enables the correct learning of pronunciation
    and syntax.

   Jokes and rhymes overrides rote learning by
    infusing more fun.
   Many takers as reading is a clear-cut way to
    improve ones language.

   Not a favorite tool for beginners.

“ I tried translating news articles and read other
    articles on general topics which helped me develop
    a working knowledge in French” -Yangchen Roy.
 An extended use of the internet and reading
    tools.
   Not many recommend it as they view it as a
    technical way of approaching a foreign language.

   Only deep learners can excel or derive definite
    results from this method.
› First four learning strategies are more popular.


› Speaking practice leads the list.


› Learning a foreign language takes hard work,long
  hours,continuous practice and multiple
  approaches.
› Average proficiency- 40%
  Average time spent- 2.5 hrs

  • 3. A group of 14 EFL-U students studying the foreign language as an optional were selected and interviewed on the methods employed by them in learning it.The results showed us some trend-setting strategies used by them in picking up their respective languages.
  • 5.  Foremost trend in the survey  the most formidable strategy w.r.t language learning  Almost 100% of the participants favoured it. “'I used to speak a lot in class even when I made absolutely no sense at all” – Ayushi Pandey
  • 6.  95% of the participants agreed that drawing parallels with one’s mother tongue helped them to make definite progress with the nuances of their target language.  Helped them pick up the quirks of the language.  Forms a deep understanding of both languages.
  • 7.  An imperative tool in the language learning process.  Statistics shows that utilisation of the tools 'parallels with mother tongue' and 'internet' are bestowed with the same importance. Equal takers.  Internet is like a ‘Third Mentor’ “No matter what,internet never fails to provide me with some kind of a solution.It never lets me down”- Ram Nivas.
  • 8.  The irrefutable emotional aspect that plays a vital role in the whole process of learning.  Primary objective with which one takes up a foreign language . “Whatsoever the reason be, it definitely fuels up the process since passion is necessary to learn anything”– Sabbah Qamri.
  • 9. Most students held that teacher-student interaction always leaves a better result in foreign language learning. Malemngnabi Akoijam,surprisingly disagrees ; ‘face-to-face learning is not crucial in foreign language studies but it can serve as a definite tool for some in the long term‘  She cited an example of her natives being able to speak Korean after watching Korean serials. She does stress the importance of group discussions however.
  • 10. A popular language learning tool for 75% of the participants.  Aids visual learners more  A pleasure meets work learning tool.
  • 11. Plays a huge role in motivating the person. Piques the learner’s interest which encourages us to learn in a better way.  Enables learners to relate to the language on an emotional level.  A mode that excludes ‘practical,need to know’ mode learners.
  • 12. Helps the auditory learner more.  Enables the correct learning of pronunciation and syntax.  Jokes and rhymes overrides rote learning by infusing more fun.
  • 13. Many takers as reading is a clear-cut way to improve ones language.  Not a favorite tool for beginners. “ I tried translating news articles and read other articles on general topics which helped me develop a working knowledge in French” -Yangchen Roy.
  • 14.  An extended use of the internet and reading tools.  Not many recommend it as they view it as a technical way of approaching a foreign language.  Only deep learners can excel or derive definite results from this method.
