What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Why does the film industry spend so much time and money test screening films to invited audiences or finding out what audiences like through market research?
Who are your audience? Justify this with reference to your primary and secondary audience research.
At what stages did you ask your audience questions or get their feedback?
How did you get this feedback?
How did you use this feedback? Was it useful? Did you make any changes to your work because of it?
What does the final audience feedback suggest about the success of your marketing campaign?
2. When a film is first being introduced or is in its late production stage they will have
many ways of telling which audience would enjoy their product or not. One of
these ways is by screen testing their film in which they invite audiences to come and
see their film for a free screening. This takes lots of time and is very costly to the
film’s marketing film who need to know more about what could make the film
better and what audience exactly enjoys it the most.
3. By testing these audiences with a new and
upcoming film they can find out lots of
crucial information which could be
implemented to make the film itself or the
target audience better and more suited.
After the film is shown to the audience
they will be provided with a feedback
sheet which will have several different
questions on the sheet asking the viewer
about what they liked or disliked about
the film. It will also ask for their age,
gender and other demographics to narrow
down what audience type they slot
within. Test screening have been
recommended by many different big film
producers as they believe they are a great
way to really discover what a film is
looking for. Here is an example of one of
these surveys:
4. Our audience we discovered was equally distributed between male and female patrons
along the age range of 13-20. This is because we performed some primary research as
we did a survey into the different audiences and what genre they most enjoy. This
gave us crucial information and helped us decide which genre to pick when deciding
which kind of film to make initially. We found that people of that age really most
related and enjoyed comedy films. This was clear to us so we went through the route
of comedy.
As much as we would have preferred to ask a more
wide audience it would have been hard to achieve
due to our lack of resources and time. This meant
that our results were somehow bias and also
showed very little of what demographics liked
as a whole.
5. We also had another form of feedback which was when we uploaded our rough cut’s up
to YouTube we had other groups comment on our video and give their advice and critics
to the trailer, poster and magazine cover so far. As an exercise to get some feedback on
our trailer we asked the other groups also making a trailer in our class to watch our trailer
and give us some feedback on what they thought was good about it and what they
thought could potentially be improved upon itself. I think that by giving us some
feedback it is really helpful and especially by those who are currently completing the same
task. This is because it can help us see what they're doing what we aren't which could
potentially drastically improve the quality of our presentation overall. Here is the
screenshots of the product feedback:
6. We used this feedback to improve our final products. For instance initially there
was lots of focus on people mentioning the titles within our trailer were not quite
that good. So immediately after being told this we discussed the changes we could
make as a group and came to a conclusion to change not only their colour but the
overall design of the titles. We found this information to be extremely useful
because looking back at our product it was hard to be critical of our own work
but getting an outside view highlighted some issues within our products. Here
you can see the changes that we made.
Before After
7. From the final audience feedback this suggests to us that our media products are
on the right path but still require tweaking. I believe that with the given
knowledge of feedback now if I had a chance to go back and make alterations
with the product I definitely would make some. But of course due to a lack of
time and resources this unfortunately was unable for us.
The changes that I would find would involve changing the overall plot of the film
trailer and making it have more of a cliff-hanger at the end. This is what some
people told us we could do with the feedback but we couldn’t due to lack of time
and resources.
