2. WHY AUDIENCES ARE IMPORTANT
Having an audience is very important when creating a media product, and they are also important
to media industries in general. Without and audience, media products wouldn’t be successful. This is
due to the fact that audience are consumers so will be watching, buying, viewing, or listening to that
product, and this is wha makes a media product successful.
Different media products will be aimed towards different audiences, so it’s very important a media
industry focuses on what their own target audience would like to see within their product, to ensure
their audience then like that product and will want to buy it. For example, buying a film on DVD.
Media industries must intice their audiences, because without an audience a media product
wouldn’t be successful, so it’s very important the industry find out what their target audience want
to see.
3. WHY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK IS
IMPORTANT
Audience feedback is so important, as media industries want to ensure they create a
product that audiences will be satisfied with and will want to buy. Film industries will spend
a lot of time and money into audience research to make sure they find out what their
audience like, and they will show their target audience a rough version of their product and
gain feedback on this, and base their changes on the feedback so the industry can change
their product the way their target audience want to see it, as this is what will get audiences
to buy the product. In short term, it will cost money to get audience feedback, however in
the long term, this is what will give the film a high profit. This is due to the fact that if film
industries listen to audience feedback, they will crate a product that their target audience
will like and want to buy which will give them a very high profit and will make their film
successful.
4. OUR TARGET AUDIENCE
To find out what our own target audience should be for our film ‘Discontinue’, I looked at the Pearl and
Dean website to look at other films target audiences that are very similar to our film. As we took inspiration
from Inception and The Happening, I did some research on their target audiences. I found that Inception had
an audience of 50% female and 50% male, with the majority of 43% of people being 15-24. The Happening
was very similar to this and had 49% male and 51% female, with 30% being 15-24. Due this we decided to
target our film towards audiences of ages 15-24 males and females. This worked very well as we have main
characters of males and females of the ages 18, which the young audience will be able to relate to.
5. HOW OUR FILM APPEALS TO OUR
TARGET AUDIENCE
Our film appeals to our
audience of males and
females of ages 15-24 year
olds due to the fact that our
main characters are both
male and female, and are of
ages 18. Our audience will
then be able to relate to the
characters of their age and
gender so will appeal to
them well.
One of the locations used within
our film is Reigate College. People
of ages 15-24 will associate with
education, as they will go to
secondary school, college or
university, so our audience will be
able to relate to our film due to
this.
The use of the Polaroid
camera is also suitable for
our audience, as this
instax camera is a new
product which a lot of
teenagers enjoy to use.
6. TEASER ROUGH CUT FEEDBACK
We received our audience feedback from other students that also study A level media. This was very useful, as the
students knew what they were talking about as they study media. They were also the same age as us, as they were
of ages 17-18. This was also very useful, due to the fact that this fit in with the ages of our target audiences of
ages 15-24 perfectly. We also received feedback from both genders. We firstly received feedback on a rough cut
of our teaser trailer. We wanted to gain feedback on our rough cut so other students could see what we were
trying to achieve. As we had also worked on our teaser a lot by the time we wanted feedback, they also had a feel
of what the final teaser was going to look like, so they gave feedback based on what they saw. Students walked
around the class and when they watched out rough cut on the mac we were using, they wrote on post-it notes on
what they liked and disliked about our rough cut of our teaser. This was very useful as we then had this feedback
in front of us. We gained both positive and negative feedback.
7. By looking at the first pieces of feeback we were given by
our peers, we were able to see the positives and
negatives of our trailer.
Positives
Good fast paced editing and quick shots work well, which
increases the tension towards the end of the teaser.
Good editing overall
Good use of green screen to show the narrative of our
story – time and people stopping around the main
characters
Good variey of shots and range of shots used such as
clise ups etc.
Negatives
Teaser a bit too long
Need titles
Need release date
One use of the split screens doesn’t work
Overall we got some very positive feeback. The editing style was good as we
used a range of different shots which fit together well so we kept this and
also kept the shot where we used the green screen as this worked effectively
and showed the narrative of our film. However we hadn’t quite finished our
teaser at this point as it was only a rough cut, which is why people said we
still needed titles and the release date. Another piece of negative feedback
we got was about a shot where we had used a split screen to make it look as
if the character was walking past a set of leaves that had stopped floating in
mid air, however this didn’t work as some moving leaves still went infront of
the character so the audience were clearly able to tell we had used a split
screen. Due to this we took this part out of our trailer as it wasn’t working
well. The leaves also looked blurry when they had been paused. After gaining
the feedback, we took out the split screen clip, and added in titles and the
release date of the film.
Getting feedback on our rough cut was very useful so we
could see what not to change and what to change in our
teaser so we could ensure to satisfy our audience and listen
to them to ensure we made a product that they like in order
for our products to be successful.
8. TEASER FINAL CUT FEEDBACK Secondly, we then asked for feedback when we had
completed the final cut of our teaser. This was so we
could evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of it to
see how successful it would be with our target
audience.
We got this feedback by asking students to
comment on our uploaded video on youtube of
our final cut of our teaser trailer. This feedback
was very useful, as it showed us how well we had
done.
9. TEASER FINAL CUT SUMMARY
Overall, the feedback we got on the final cut on our teaser was very
positive. A lot of people said we had a good range of shots, good
diegetic and non-diegetic sound, our genre was established well, good
use of green screen, and our genre was conveyed well.
Due to this feedback I can see that our target audience are satisfied
with our teaser, so I wouldn’t make too many changes to it as our target
audience seem to be satisfied with it as our feedback was positive and
we didn’t gain any negative feedback.
10. FEEDBACK ON TEASER, POSTER AND MAGAZINE
Finally, after we had finished creating our teaser, poster and
magazine cover, we asked students in our class to give us
feedback on how all 3 of our products link together and create
a good branding image.
The majority of comments we received were that we had a
good use of colour scheme, by using the colour blue
consistently, we clearly show who the main character is, we
used the same font throughout our products, we showed
consistent use of props – such as clocks, watches, pocket
watches to show the theme and narrative of our teaser, we
clearly stated our genre through all of our products. Due to
this feedback, I feel positive about our products and as our
target audience are satisfied with our products, making them
successful within our target audience. Getting feedback at the
end was very useful so we were able to see the strengths and
weaknesses of our work to see what we could improve upon
next time.
However, we didn’t add in the tagline within our teaser. Although this wasn’t a piece of feedback we got from
our audience, it is something I would change within our products as it doesn’t create consistency between all
products.
12. SUMMARY
Overall, getting feedback from our target audience was very useful as we were able to
make changes to our work in order to satisfy our audience and suit their wants and needs
in order for them to enjoy our product, which is what makes our products successful.
It also showed us our strengths and weaknesses, so let us know what could do to improve
in the future.
