regular supermarket employees who also
work really hard (for less salary probably),
so it's nice that you're able to do this ”

Editor's Notes
Welcome to our presentation we are presenting today our research of how we redesigned features in the gorillas app to improve digital wellbeing.
Our theoretical context is fast track delivery services, we observed that these services tend to prioritize sales over wellbeing. As can be seen from our various screenshots over the past few weeks.
We observed Emotional manipulation through for example guilt tripping as can be seen from the smileys for example, or ridicule your choice of going to the supermarket and standing in line
We started off with our observations and initial user experience conversations to explore redesign possibilities to improve wellbeing
From these conversations we dove deeper into a few topics that were mentioned to uncover a health phenomenon
The insights from our research were mainly about money and primarily using the app for discounts, however as the conversations progressed we found many comments to also be about the relational and emotional wellbeing. The participant quotes depict the feeling of guilt, laziness as well as wishing they could contribute more.
The primary topic was discounts and money, however for use we didn’t see much opportunity that benefits the wellbeing of the user as well as be profitable for gorillas
Therefore our health phenomena are relational wellbeing, and emotional wellbeing where the feelings mentioned during our research was primarily about missing a meaningful connection with their community through the app for example the lack of promotion of local stores and feeling of guilt by lack of contribution to local community.
The health phenomenon of missing a meaningful connection to to community and feeling of guilt due to lack of own contribution to the community relates directly to the social cognitive theory model. Specifically looking at community empowerment (so enable communities to increase control over their lives) and community competence where they have sufficient knowledge, udgement, skill or strength to regulate outcome as a community.
I will pass on the word to maaike to explain how we integrated this in our redesign
Combination of positive activities + community empowerment = our solution, this leads to improved wellbeing
Through positive interactions integrated in technology we can provide an opportunity to contribute to wellbeing on a global scale.
Positive activities is found to boost wellbeing over time and is linked to lasting happiness. Examples of positive activities are expressing gratitude, strengthening personal relationships and contributing to something greater than oneself. Therefore we included wellbeing and having activities through the gorillas application with this we try to stimulate the engagement and connectedness of a personal experience.
Health and well-being is not exactly the same, but it is connected. Well Being is part of your health and it can have a great influence on your health. An example of this is when you have a lot of stress for your exams, which can lead to headaches. This shows how our emotional wellbeing can influence your overall health. Through our design we try to stimulate, facilitate and inspire the user with activities that increase their wellbeing.
The focus is on emotional and relational wellbeing which, in the end, can also influence the users’ physical health.
This redesign is substantiated through the positive actions theory and the social cognitive theory model. It also doesn’t interfere with Gorillas revenue model, making it viable. We recommend to test the new feature to validate if it is desirable for the user and if it will succeed.
We recommend the company to test the new feature to establish the desirability of the user. And then hopefully, our hypothesis of improving wellbeing through positive actions in the gorillas app
Positive experiences mediate the relationship between positive activities and sustained
wellbeing [18]. More precisely, positive activities stimulate (a) further positive behaviors, (b) positive
thoughts, (c) positive emotions and (d) the fulfilment of basic psychological needs which, in turn,
boost wellbeing. For instance, Frederickson et al. [64] showed that meditation (i.e., “taking care of
one’s mind”) increases people’s daily experiences of positive emotions which leads to improved personal
resources such as social relationships and physical health
These gains in personal resources then
ultimately bring about increases in wellbeing. Other positive activities such as “practicing gratitude”
prompt an individual to think about life in a more positive way [65] which again results in higher levels of
wellbeing. “Practicing gratitude” also stimulates further positive behaviors such as exercising more [66]
which then promotes wellbeing through improved physical health. In a similar vein, charitable
behavior (i.e., “contributing to the greater good”) reportedly satisfies people’s needs for relatedness
and ultimately increases both hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing [67]
Critically discuss the design and the design process from a theoretical perspective: how did you translate the theory to the design? Why do you expect the design to be effective in improving or maintaining health?
