5. WHO (World Health Organization) – aging and health – age friendly world – Mental health of older adults
o Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly
double from 12% to 22%.
o By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger
than 5 years.
o The pace of population ageing is much faster than in the past.
o All countries face major challenges to ensure that their health and social systems are ready
to make the most of this demographic shift.

Thinking like a designer can transform the way organizations develop products, services, processes, and strategy. This approach, which is known as design thinking, brings together what is desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable. It also allows people who aren't trained as designers to use creative tools to address a vast range of challenges.
Innovation occurs when these factors overlap.
Roozenburg model of reasoning by designers show how form and function are related with user needs.
And considering IDEO model combined with Roozenburg model, we reach to this design process, where we solve a problem by observing the user, that leads us a desirable design.
To find the most “real” problems (not just a made up problem to solve and call it design!) around my favorite field “health”, I searched upcomming global health issues. One of the significant problems that WHO stated, was the growing population of elderly witch I also found plenty of papers in different majors trying to solve challenges caused by that.
On the other hand, we can see the path of lifestyle change, that has caused people being lonelier than past decades. So what will happen to lonely elderly when their population grow but they get lonely even more when they have fewer children or relatives around them?
This is a part of a Persian movie, that depicts how it feels when elder people get lonely… now you see what I mean
So, by finding a problem and observing the main people concerned with the problem, I stated my project goal as you see!
Then, due to the design process I mentioned before, I found Positive Design so close to my goal that I picked it as the approach and value of my design.
Searching more about positive design, I got a brighter vision by picking some of the closest positive emotions to elder subjective needs that professor Desmet had suggested in his paper.
I had to get to know my users more, so Persona making was the best helping tool after my long deep interviews with some random old people living in Tehran, Iran. I classified all the data to 3 personas as above.
Lets get familiar with each of them. “Sedighe” is an old religious name in Iran, and “Khanoom” means “Mrs”.
The mood board also illustrates her favorite stuff or hobbies.
“Forough” is some kind of a open-minded name! and “joon” means “dear”.
See what this active young hearted grandma likes in her moodboard
“Iraj” is an old name that shows power and discipline, and “khan” refers to an important member mostly in a huge family.
Perceptual Map was another great tool to visualize how same or different are my three personas. The overlap shows if I work on that area, I would have a better chance to cover all of my user needs.
As you see, I categorized the maps in 4 different charachtristics: Subjective well being, Mood, Lifestyle, and Personality type
If you still remember, my goal was: to improve subjective well-being in lonely elder by affecting the interior atmosphere
Therefore, I used a mind map to figure out what factors affect the interior atmosphere?!
In this state, I was crystal clear that what I can do as a designer to solve the issue. Thus, by using Scenario Based Design Method, I could give different solutions and check if they suit for the situation or not.
As you see, there are 3 factors in S.B design. By this method, we can balance the persona and our goal with the “Setting or Context” or what we call the “Design or Solution”!
In fact, scenario is describing the solved situation of a particular persona’s problem.
سناریو توصیف حالت حل شده ی مسئله برای پرسونای خاص است
After brainstorming and idea generating, I finally reached the best scenario that I call “The Gamified Interactive X”. In order to check whether my Idea work or not, I researched among academic paper results on the positive effect of listening to music on elderly overall wellbeing and memory, and I was right!See the storyboards of the final scenario in the following slides.
[If the slide motion doesn’t play, keep in mind that the 1st pic is top-left, 2nd is top-right, 3rd is down-right, and 4th is down-left]
Story: Sedighe Khanoom is sitting in her old house, asks “X” to play a particular Quranic verse and she tries to follow it on her book. Then she unconsciously reads a part of the verse aloud, and “X” hears that! So “X” starts to glow to show Sedighe that it understands she is reading with it and is happy! So lets read aloud again!
This feature of “X” encourages Sedighe to improve her reading. After a while she will become more confident reading in some gatherings. She may even memorize some verses by this way, and it’s beneficial for her memory.
[If the slide motion doesn’t play, keep in mind that the 1st pic is top-left, 2nd is top-right, 3rd is down-right, and 4th is down-left]
Story: Forough Joon wakes up in the morning with a light pleasing music that “X” plays while glowing and simulating sunrise light. She starts to make breakfast and asks “X” to play her favorite song. She uncounsciously sings with the music and “X” hears that! So “X” starts to glow to show Forough that it understands she is singing with it and is happy! So lets sing aloud more together! Forough doesn’t feel alone with “X” at least when they are singing together.
[If the slide motion doesn’t play, keep in mind that the 1st pic is top-left, 2nd is top-right, 3rd is down-right, and 4th is down-left]
Story: Iraj Khan is a serious science man! He mostly uses “X” to listen to the world news or some historical audio books. But sometimes he misses old some revolutionary songs he used to listen when he was younger. He asks “X” to play them, he doesn’t sing with it, but he gets the rhythm with his fingers on the chair’s arm. “X” even hears that! So “X” starts to glow to show Iraj that it understands he is enjoying the melody! Iraj smiles

This concept is based on the elder people struggling with technology and having problem video-calling when they miss their beloved ones.
Some of the common problems are: hand shaking while holding phone, complex interaction needed, not positioning their own face correctly with the webcam because they don’t see the small picture of their own.
(in this case my first persona needs this solution more, but other personas could use this feature too)
Story: Sedighe Khanoom asks “X” to call her grandson. He is not available now, so “X” tells Sedighe whether she wants to send a voice or message and “X” will record it easily. After a while, her grandson calls back and “X” informs that to Sedighe. “X” tells Sedighe to push the big button on the top to answer the call, and sit in front of “X”. Then “X” projects the grandson video on the wall , and automatically detects Sedighe’s face with the webcam.
Now, how does “X” look like?
I used some of the familiar products of the personas for form inspiration.
Then, in a convergent process, I narrowed down their shapes and reached to a soft curvy triangle.
Then, I developed the triangle considering all the functions.
And here’s the final etude!
Identity Design:
Name:
delight: great pleasure
de + light: in old Latin means another light
Also there is a “el” hidden in the word, pointing out my users “ELderly”
So, my “delight” is a different light, brightening elder people lives
Logo:
“e” evokes the shape of the product.

Now lets take a look at the fist slide. We saw how the “human” part of the design was done. What about business and technical matters?
Here are the technical parameters that will make this concept come into reality.

And here is the business side of the design.
This video shows how “delight” glows when hearing the user’s voice.
Here it’s playing a song from the famous Iranian poet “Fereydoon Moshiri”, and my aunt is singing a verse with it.
Special thanks to my wonderful supervisor Mr. Nader Shayegh.
