Design Goal: Transforming the boundary of differences in women's clothing and style preferences into a place of common understanding values between Iranian and Dutch cultures.
Result: The outcome of quilting could be any piece of clothing; but we chose a "robe", as an icon of comfort at home, that every woman would use no matter what culture she comes from.
Every piece of fabric comes with a story, a metaphor for different experiences and values.
The "Quilture Robe" is a symbol of shared culture and stories which unites and empowers women.
Design goal is to transform boundary of differences in clothing into a common understanding of values.
For iranian and dutch culture
Target users are non religious dutch and religious iranian women
living in multicultural neighborhoods
We found it important because of
growing diversity in netherlands
Cultural context is important when talking about fashion
It is linked to social acceptance
And can help overcome stigmas between cultural groups
We did quite bit of interviews from both sides to validate our assumptions
General perception of the two cultures from each other looks pretty accurate
However, deeper values are not easily grasped from outer layers like symbols
This shows that gap between socio-cultural dimensions
Dutch and Iranian fashion seems so different
But women of both cultures have something in common:
Expressing their values through appearance
We designed 'Quilture'
Quilture is a service which encourages woman from different cultures to sew quilted pieces of fabric together
and get to know each other.
Quilture consists of a folder with sewing patterns for a quilt.
The folder can be deposited in community centers of neighborhoods
to encourage neighbors from different cultures to meet
Everyone brings their own piece of fabric that is meaningful to them
and together they turn it in wonderful outfits!
