Positive form or degree
Indicates no comparison.
1. Seb is an industrious boy.
2. This book is long.
3. The airport is far.
4. My mom is a good cook.
5. Her hair is short.
Please note that positive is also called as the base form of an adjective.
comparative form or degree
- compares or describes two nouns or pronouns. It is formed by adding
–er + than after the adjective OR adding more + than before the
adjective)
1. My essay is longer than yours.
2. She is more beautiful than her sister.
3. Apples are tastier than oranges.
4. This painting is more interesting than that painting.
Please note that, there are only two people, things or ideas being
compared.
Rules in forming or choosing the right comparative form
1. For adjectives with only one syllable or two syllables, only add –er
at the end of an adjective then the word -than.
I have fewer books than my sister.
Maria’s hair is longer than Lita’s.
Baguio City is colder than Antipolo City.
2. For adjectives with two or more syllables, use more + than before the
adjective.
Paul is more charming than Sean.
Yuan is more handsome than his cousin Dave.
Four Helium pupils are more honest than Four Silver.
3. For adjectives ending in –y, change the “y” to “i” and add –er.
Lian’s bag is heavier than Fae’s.
Liza Soberano is prettier than Pokwang.
My mother is busier than my father.
4. For adjectives that belong to consonant-vowel-consonant (cvc)
family, double the last letter and add –er + than
My tummy is bigger than yours.
Our cat is fatter than our dog.
She looks sadder than her sister when they go to the
mall.
Filipinos’ skin is tanner than American’s.
4. For adjectives ending in -e, just add –r + than after the adjective.
My shirt is larger than my brother’s.
