Lesson 8: Basic 3D Construction
In this lesson you will learn how to construct new 3D shapes using the following 4
ways:
● Extrude
● Sweep
● Revolve
● Loft
Key Vocabulary:
Sweep: To move in a curve.
Profile: The shape outline
Intersect: To divide something by passing or lying across it
Extrude: To push or force out
Loft: To combine 2D shapes to make a 3D shape.
Axis: A real or imaginary line about which a body, can rotate, a line in which the
object is the same on all sides.
Section 1: Extrude To push or force out.
1. Sketch any 2D shape and select it.
2. Click on Construct menu and choose Extrude.
3. Pull the arrow handle to
create a 3D shape.
2. Creative Design & Innovation subject 2 Instructor: Shamsa Aziz
Section 2: Sweep: To move in a curve
(You need a profile + path)
1.Select a cube from the primitives menu and place it on the grid.
2. Sketch a circle and place it beside the cube then rotate it 90 degrees.
3. Click on construct menu and choose sweep.
4. Select the cube as the profile and the circle as the path.
3. Creative Design & Innovation subject 3 Instructor: Shamsa Aziz
5. Now the tool is active. The yellow arrow handle can be adjusted to set the start
and end of the sweep.
Section 3: Revolve.
1. Sketch any two 2D shapes.
2. Click on construct menu and choose
revolve.
3. Select the circle as the profile you want to
revolve and the rectangle as the axis you want to
revolve around.
4. Creative Design & Innovation subject 4 Instructor: Shamsa Aziz
4. Drag the yellow circle to create the new shape.
Section 4: Loft: To combine 2D shapes to
make a 3D shape.
1. Sketch an ellipse and any octagon shape. Move the octagon shape in the
workspace and place it directly over the ellipse.
2. Click on construct menu and choose loft.
3. Select the two shapes. You will have the new 3d
shape.
