Digestion

Eating
Animals
Amoeba
Amoeba is unicellular
microscopic
organism.
It is found usually
near ponds.
It has Pseudopodia.
(Pseudo-False, Podia-
Feet)
It uses its’ False feet
for Movement &
Capture of food.
Amoeba
Amoebas’ Digestion
 Amoeba`s digestion is called
Phagocytosis
 First Amoeba pushes it`s
Pseudopodia traps and engulfs
the organism. The get trapped in
the Food Vacuole. Digestive
Juices are secreted in this
vacuoles, then, they act on food
and break it down into simpler
substances.
About Grass Eating Animals
 The digestion in Grass Eating animals is called Rumination.
 The animals which do Rumination are called Ruminants.
 Ruminants have 4 compartments.
 The word "ruminant" comes from the Latin ruminare, which
means "to chew over again".
 Examples: Cow, Horse, Rabbit, Goat etc…;
Rumination
 When Ruminants eat Grass, they eat it partially.
Whenever we see a cow eating it eats too fast, they
send it to Rumen where bacteria acts on food they
chewed partially, it is called as cud. Then they send it to
reticulum from where it go in lumps to mouth and
cows eat properly the pair of Rumen and Reticulum is
called Reticulorumen, then it goes to Omasum where
VFAs( the cellulose is broken into acetic acid, propionic
acid, and butyric acid) are absorbed along with water
and other material. Then the food go to
Abomasum(true stomach) it is like non-ruminant
stomach. From here it happens like non-ruminant
digestion
Functions of 4 Compartments
 Rumen – This is the place where Bacteria acts on
Cud.
 Reticulum – After the activities in Rumen, food
comes here and go in lumps to mouth.
 Omasum – VFAs and others are absorbed here.
 Abomasum – It is also known as True Stomach. It
releases HCl and do functions which a non-
ruminant stomach do.
