2. Choose three videos of the same genre as the one you need to produce
(try to find a performance music video, a narrative music video and a
conceptual music video.
Be selective with the videos you pick, they should intentionally help give
you ideas in terms of characters, how to represent certain themes,
cinematography, mise-en-scene, etc.
Analyse each music video.This can be done in bullet points with an
overall summary at the end. Be specific with what your focus is in each
video (see next slide)
3. Analysing in detail these three music videos will help you in terms of
planning your ideas. Look at the following aspects:
Type of music video (Performance/Narrative/Conceptual/Hybrid)
Artist’s representation (Star theory)
Narrative structure or semiotics (use of signs and symbols)
Use of audio-visual media language (Camera work/Sound/Editing/Mise-en-scene)

Intro: Purpose of the music video for the institution/company behind the
production and distribution of the video (marketing) and for the audience
(uses and gratifications theory)
Cases of study: Minimum one for each category (narrative, conceptual,
performance) to a maximum of three examples for each category.
Generic conventions: looking at your cases of study, what are the conventions
of these videos, according to their categories and musical genres?
Synergy: Examples of other promotional devices (marketing) used for the
same cases of study that you have chosen( such as posters, magazine ads,
social media, etc.)
