Students must choose five music videos to analyze over the summer break according to specific criteria. For each video, they must include a link, discuss camera shots, editing, mise-en-scene, sound, representations, Goodwin's theory, style, record label, director, opinion, conventions, influence on their own work, and use different technologies for each analysis. The analyses will be posted individually online and labeled as research.
1. Summer Holiday Homework – Analysing Music Videos
Over the summer you will need to choose FIVE music video to analyse and
complete an individual post for each one (label it research). They can be any
music video that you have not already written about on your blog…. Five is the
minimum requirement, feel free to do more!
For each video you should:
Include a link or embedded version of it within the post
Complete good textual analysis (with screen shots) covering -
o The use of camera shots, angles and movement
o Editing (including special effects)
o Mise en scene
o Sound – focus on the lyrics (what do they say/mean), the rhythm
of the music (is there cutting to the beat, does it change, how are
the verses and choruses treated differently etc.), any additional
sound elements
Discuss what representations are present (gender, place, ethnicity, age
etc.) and how the representations are communicated to the audience.
Consider if there are any issues surrounding representation
Talk about the ideas of Andrew Goodwin, how could they be applied to
the video (remember that there are 7 points to Goodwin’s theory)
Analyse the style of the music video (is it performance, narrative, concept
or a combination) and give evidence to support your ideas
Mention what record label is associated with the video (and artist).
Find out if the video was done by a well know director and if so talk about
how it is typical or not typical of their style. Consider if it is typical of the
artist as well.
Give your opinion about the video – does it use micro elements well, how
do you feel about the representations/ messages it gives, is it an
interesting video, are there aspects that you don’t like?
Talk about how it is conventional and non conventional
How might it influence your own work
Try to use a different technology for each video you write about.
