conventions of real media products?
2. What do I write about?
You have produced a film promotion package of 3 products:
Film Trailer; Front cover of a Magazine and a Film Poster.
Each product has its purpose in the film promotion either in
Print forms or audio visual forms of communication to your
audience.
oState which forms of communication you have used to
promote your film.
oUse examples from all of your products (Film Trailer and
two ancillary promotional products) to explain how you have
used the conventions, developed the conventions or
challenged the conventions of existing products.
oRemember, postmodern texts (films) by definition
‘challenge’ the conventions used in film making. So
highlight any ways that you have ‘challenged’ conventions.
3. Film Trailer Conventions
o State the purpose of your film trailer; to advertise the film
in a cinema, TV, Internet, etc (using different platforms).
o State what your genre is and how it use or challenges
these conventions (Hybrid?). What iconography did you
use to establish genre for your target audience?
o State what your narrative is (3 act structure) and whether
you followed narrative conventions (or challenged them).
o How did you structure your trailer? What is you disruption?
Which parts of the narrative structure did you use? How
did you reveal characters?
o What were your influences in your choice of genre,
narrative, characters and mise en scene? Are these
evident?
o What conventions did you follow for certification and
production companies used?
4. Film Trailer Conventions

1.Genre Conventions and Narrative – Characters, equilibrium,
disruption, hints and resolution etc.
2.Camera work/Editing – composition, movement, shot type
transitions, effects, colour, time remapping etc
3.Sound and Titles – after effects, fonts, animation, effects,
soundtrack, ambient etc
4.Mise en scene – costume, sets, location, lighting, props
oDid you follow, develop or challenge conventions?
oUse plenty of examples and evidence from your trailer
(screen shots, clips, director’s commentary etc)
oLink some of your techniques used to your research, to show
your influences and where you got some of your ideas from.
5. Magazine & Film Poster
o Briefly state what the purpose of your ancillary products
are and how your film poster and film magazine will
help further promote your film.
o What meanings did you construct through your film
poster to help promote your film? How did you use or
develop (or challenge?) conventional forms of
construction?
o What meanings did you construct through your film
magazine cover? How did you use or develop the
conventions used?
