This document discusses the history of education in modern India from pre-independence times. It outlines several periods of education development: Vedic, Buddhist, Islamic, pre-independence, and post-independence. It then focuses on the development of education during the British period from 1700-1947 AD. Various European powers like the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British established trading posts in India and began missionary schools to propagate Christianity through education. These schools taught local and European languages as well as other subjects. Over time, the British gained control of India and contributed greatly to developing the modern system of English education in the country.
