3. MASTHEAD
➤ The masthead is placed at the top of the page
➤ It is white in a basic non-serif font - contrasts to background and is simple for brand
awareness
➤ Capital letters and full stop for importance
➤ The composition is made more interesting by the vertical 90 degree turned ‘THE’
and then the horizontal ‘RISE’. This makes it more interesting to look at and makes
‘RISE’ the focus of the masthead
5. ISSUE DATE
➤ Directly underneath masthead - keeps readers up to date
➤ Serif font which resembles a typewriter
➤ Fit perfectly beside model’s head - sleek design
➤ White text for simple and minimal design - matches masthead and cover lines
7. BACKGROUND
➤ Plain but grey gradient to draw attention
to the model’s face
➤ Grey contrasts to white text and darker
featured of model
➤ Gradient provides more interesting design
for customers whilst not being
overbearing
9. BARCODE
➤ Placed in bottom lefthand corner -
inconspicuous as it’s unimportant to overall
design
➤ White background removed so that attention is
not drawn towards the harsh white
11. MAIN IMAGE
➤ Mid-shot portrait makes it the centre of focus
for consumers
➤ Fills a large amount of the page
➤ Eye contact made - direct address gives it a
personal level for potential readers
➤ Lighting in photo provides contrast and
shadows between left and right sides of face,
giving it a dramatic and dark feel - matches
the vibes of the double page spread and
themes of the article
13. COVER LINES
➤ White text, in two different versions of the same
font (Eras Light and Eras Medium) - contrast to
background and provides contrast
➤ Use of white extended lines matches the main
cover line and house theme - used on the double
page spread and the contents page
➤ Titles in capital letters to draw attention and
explanation below in lower case
➤ Fit around model’s head to not detract from the
image and to fit alongside it - sleek house design
15. MAIN COVER LINE / FEATURE
➤ Overlays image to convey importance
➤ Larger text but same fonts as other cover
lines - keeps to the same theme but makes it
stand out more
➤ Use of white line fits with house theme
➤ Text different sizes to highlight important
words i.e. ‘FAME’
17. Contents Page

18. LEFT HAND COLUMN
➤ Grey to fit with house design
➤ Thin to not take upon too much room on the page - enough information
fits inside
➤ Use of black lines fits with house theme
19. LEFT HAND COLUMN - EXAMPLES IN
OTHER MAGAZINES➤ This is a very billboard specific feature
to place it on the left hand side, but it
can be common to have columns on
contents pages
➤ I have challenged the conventions of
billboard magazines buy changing the
contents of the column
20. EDITOR’S MESSAGE
➤ Title and sign-off are in the same typewriter font as the issue
number on the front cover - consistency
➤ Main body of text in eras light, same font as cover lines -
consistency
➤ Font in black to be easily readable against grey background
➤ Includes image of writer that fades from the bottom
➤ Text fits around photograph - consistency with front cover
21. EDITOR’S MESSAGE - EXAMPLES IN
OTHER MAGAZINES➤ Many magazine’s do not have an editor’s
comment on the contents page so therefore
I have challenged and developed the
conventions of the music magazine
➤ Kerrang is one brand of magazine which
does conform to this convention however
22. PREVIOUS ISSUE
➤ Details about the previous issue
➤ In the same black font as the editor’s message - consistency
➤ Another black line to separate parts of the column
➤ Photographs placed equally down the edge to fit in with
sleek theme
23. PREVIOUS ISSUE - EXAMPLES IN
OTHER MAGAZINES➤ Again, this is not a common feature of music magazine’s
contents pages so I have challenged the conventions,
especially of Billboard magazines as I have changed the
whole contents of the left hand column
24. SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS
➤ Website, email address and social media links all help to
create larger audience and encourage consumers to share
the magazine with their friends - keeping in touch with
audience and feels personal
25. SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS - EXAMPLES IN
OTHER MAGAZINES➤ Again, many magazines don’t have such a large number of
social media links on their contents pages
➤ In fact, they usually only have a website and email address
so this again challenges the conventions
26. PAGE NUMBER AND TITLE
➤ Page number right at the top of the page - house theme
➤ Both are underlined - page number with dark red line as keeps with house theme of
lines and red colour fits with other uses of red of the contents page (still minimal)
➤ Font of both is the previously seen typewriter font for consistency
➤ Large white empty space for minimal design and emptiness as the rest of the page
is quite full up
28. CONTENTS AND MAIN IMAGE
➤ Main image relates to the front cover -
reminds them it’s the feature for double page
spread
➤ Image fades in at the edges - consistency
with the image in editor’s section, also has
contrasts between light and dark as the front
cover and double spread does
➤ Page numbers are in larger text and red -
contrast and interest of colour and makes
them stand out
➤ Main body of text is in Eras light (house font)
with some bold and capital phrases to stand
out
30. OTHER TYPES OF MEDIA
➤ Information about the magazine online and some conventions
➤ Fits into columns with the photos underneath - sleek house design
➤ Consumers can see where they can interact with the brand outside of the magazine
➤ Red titles fit with the red theme on the page and are bold to stand out (Eras bold)
32. OTHER ARTICLES OF INTEREST
➤ Photos of people from other articles within the magazine with page numbers in top
right corner - consumer can easily see where the most important articles are
33. OTHER ARTICLES OF INTEREST -
EXAMPLES IN OTHER MAGAZINES➤ Photos of people from other articles within the magazine with page numbers in top
right corner - consumer can easily see where the most important articles are

35. PAGE NUMBERS
➤ Font and style same as contents page - typewriter font with an extended line
underneath
➤ White text and line different to contents because this fits bettie with the overall page
design
➤ Placed in very top right and left corners so they are out of the way but consistent
with the house design
36. PAGE NUMBERS - EXAMPLES IN
OTHER MAGAZINES➤ Page numbers are usually at the bottom of the page, but as these are very small
the difference made by having them at the top instead is minimal
37. QUOTE
➤ Placed on the opposite page to the interview so both pages have interest for the
reader
➤ Quote gives the audience a quick look at what the interview is about
➤ Fit perfectly around model’s head - fits with house design
➤ White text to contrast with background in Eras medium font - the same as the main
title
39. MAIN IMAGE
➤ Image covers most of the left hand page and crosses over to the right side
➤ Hands add interest to the image and relate to the article’s themes - adds contract
from the photograph on the front cover
➤ Stark contract and highlighted features
➤ This was achieved from the lighting used which highlighted the left side of the
model and kept the right side dark
41. BACKGROUND
➤ Background is from the original photograph and is plain a grey gradient
➤ Grey colour matches front cover and also allows white text to be clear against it
43. MAIN ARTICLE TITLE
➤ In Eras medium font for consistency and minimalism
➤ White to contrast with background
➤ largest text on the page to draw attention to it straight away
➤ Underlined with an extended white line which fits with the house design seen on the
contents page and front cover
45. ARTICLE TAGLINE
➤ In Microsoft Yi Baiti font for contrast and matches with article font
➤ Fit in between the two lines of the main title in a smaller font as it’s less important
but tells the consumer what the article is about
47. MAIN INTERVIEW TEXT
➤ Predominantly Microsoft Yi Baiti font as it’s easily read and simple
➤ Some parts highlighted for effect and importance in Eras medium font - ‘oe B’ and
‘DNR’
➤ Larger ‘J’ at the beginning to start off the article as is common in most magazines -
this is also underlined which matched the house theme
➤ Arranged in columns
49. ARTICLE QUESTIONS
➤ In a larger Eras bold font for effect and to contrast them with the answers
➤ Fit around the model along with the main text - house theme and to not detract from
the image
51. I think that my magazine does conform to many codes and conventions, specifically of
the Billboard magazines. Some features are very common throughout the genre of
music magazines, but many such as the minimal house design is very reminiscent of
the Billboard magazine style. Therefore, it uses many conventions but also challenges
some from some other media magazines which are vastly different designs to my own.
My contents page specifically challenges many conventions by using social media links
and highlights from previous issues as a main feature here. I think that this shows that I
used some of my own knowledge of how to interact with consumers t develop the
features of an typical music magazine.
