Personal Statement
Personal Statement
I have been watching movies and television shows for as long as I can remember and have since become interested by the inner workings of the industry, I
adore that everyone working behind the scenes is able to craft a convincing and living world within the picture whether that be over the course of a couple
hours or multiple episodes. One of the most impactful films on my life was Jurassic Park by the famed Steven Spielberg. I grew up fascinated by dinosaurs
and would watch the film over and over again but as I got older I began to ask questions like "How did they do that?" which led me to watching the behind
the scenes featurettes and researching how the production of the movie was accomplished which in turn made me appreciate every little detail so much
more.
There are a multitude of other pieces of media that have been an influence on me like Doctor Who, watching the show from a young age brought me into
the science fiction genre and since then I haven't turned away, going onto Star Trek which was able to convey the themes of our world in its own interesting
way. I have also been influenced by Japanese productions like the Godzilla franchise with such directors as Hideaki Anno and Ishiro Honda who are able to
use the titular character as a metaphor for war, natural disasters and commentary on politics. This franchise opened my eyes to foreign cinema and using a
production to mean something. There is a multitude of other influential pieces of media that have shaped me as a filmmaker. One example is Doctor Who,
watching the show from a young age brought me into the science fiction genre. The main reason for why I have aspirations of becoming part of the industry
is summed up in the quotes "I would like to make a film to tell children that it's good to be alive" by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary member of Studio Ghibli.
These threads all come together to contribute to my dream of one day producing a film, which can stand with its inspirations and carve its own place in
cinema history.
My speciality has always been the editing aspect of post-production as it is the main process I look forward to. It has been a hobby of mine for some time
and I even created a YouTube channel to share my projects, I mostly add clips and music together and attempt to make it my own product with the editing
style I experiment with. As an example I found the leaver's video for my school extremely boring so decided to re-edit the footage to enhance the comedic
elements of the original and make something new. It's wonderful seeing what was and what it has become. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my work
and are also good at using cameras effectively to convey the storytelling skills I have brought over from studying English at school and expanded upon since.
I am a part of a military family which means I have moved around a lot, including living abroad, making me extremely adaptable to any new challenges I may
face. As mentioned before I have edited together a couple of projects in my own time outside of college but I have also contributed to friend's College
projects by being in or editing them.
As for my expectations of study, I would like to start working on more challenging projects that allow me to enhance and test my abilities as a film maker.
Having access to more sophisticated equipment, experiencing a professional environment will have a large effect on the visual and overall quality of the
projects I produce. Studying at University will also grow my experiences before moving onto the industry at large by working in a group on projects, creating
contacts and developing my own personal skills to become a better person and a better film maker.

  • 13. Personal Statement I have been watching movies and television shows for as long as I can remember and have since become interested by the inner workings of the industry, I adore that everyone working behind the scenes is able to craft a convincing and living world within the picture whether that be over the course of a couple hours or multiple episodes. One of the most impactful films on my life was Jurassic Park by the famed Steven Spielberg. I grew up fascinated by dinosaurs and would watch the film over and over again but as I got older I began to ask questions like "How did they do that?" which led me to watching the behind the scenes featurettes and researching how the production of the movie was accomplished which in turn made me appreciate every little detail so much more. There are a multitude of other pieces of media that have been an influence on me like Doctor Who, watching the show from a young age brought me into the science fiction genre and since then I haven't turned away, going onto Star Trek which was able to convey the themes of our world in its own interesting way. I have also been influenced by Japanese productions like the Godzilla franchise with such directors as Hideaki Anno and Ishiro Honda who are able to use the titular character as a metaphor for war, natural disasters and commentary on politics. This franchise opened my eyes to foreign cinema and using a production to mean something. There is a multitude of other influential pieces of media that have shaped me as a filmmaker. One example is Doctor Who, watching the show from a young age brought me into the science fiction genre. The main reason for why I have aspirations of becoming part of the industry is summed up in the quotes "I would like to make a film to tell children that it's good to be alive" by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary member of Studio Ghibli. These threads all come together to contribute to my dream of one day producing a film, which can stand with its inspirations and carve its own place in cinema history. My speciality has always been the editing aspect of post-production as it is the main process I look forward to. It has been a hobby of mine for some time and I even created a YouTube channel to share my projects, I mostly add clips and music together and attempt to make it my own product with the editing style I experiment with. As an example I found the leaver's video for my school extremely boring so decided to re-edit the footage to enhance the comedic elements of the original and make something new. It's wonderful seeing what was and what it has become. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my work and are also good at using cameras effectively to convey the storytelling skills I have brought over from studying English at school and expanded upon since. I am a part of a military family which means I have moved around a lot, including living abroad, making me extremely adaptable to any new challenges I may face. As mentioned before I have edited together a couple of projects in my own time outside of college but I have also contributed to friend's College projects by being in or editing them. As for my expectations of study, I would like to start working on more challenging projects that allow me to enhance and test my abilities as a film maker. Having access to more sophisticated equipment, experiencing a professional environment will have a large effect on the visual and overall quality of the projects I produce. Studying at University will also grow my experiences before moving onto the industry at large by working in a group on projects, creating contacts and developing my own personal skills to become a better person and a better film maker.

Editor's Notes

  1. Write a short paragraph about subjects you’ve already studied at school/college that have helped prepare you for your chosen courses at University- level 2 or GCSE level. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
