COMPLETED PROJECTS
Export of 12 34 class locomotives to Port Sudan for IJV Transnet
This shipment entailed the export of 12 refurbished locomotives from Durban to Port Sudan for the
Sudan Railways Corporation. These locomotives were leased to SRC for a period of 15 years.
Each locomotive weighed 192 tons with 309 cbm each including the bogeys.
A breakbulk vessel with the correct gantries and gear had to be sourced to accommodate the
heavy lifts.
The entire shipment was brought in along the wharf where there was a rail line that was in close
proximity of the vessel.
The entire loading operations for these locomotives took 3 days.
3 locomotives were stowed in 4 cargo holds .
The locomotive bodies and bogeys were stowed separately.
2 X 12m shipper owned containers of spares and accessories were shipped on the same vessel.
It took 10 days for the vessel to reach Port Sudan, where the off loading operation was done in
reverse of the loading.
15
16. The value of this project was ZAR 80 million.
16
17. As part of the NEPAD initiative between South Africa and other African countries, a local South
African Company – Global railway Engineering International was awarded a contract to supply
Sudan railway Corporation with 150 tank wagons and 300 container wagons to Port Sudan over a
period of 12 months.
Each of the Tank wagons weighed 13 tons and 110 Cbm.
The container wagons were shipped in lots of 3 stacked together and weighed 21 tons and 92
Cbm.
This project was shipped in lots of 12 tank wagons and 25 container wagons over 12 vessels.

Africa for refurbishment and return.

Diamond Industry .
The entire plant was shipped in different components which included, abnormal, hazardous and
sensitive cargo.
The abnormal cargo was stowed below deck , while the hazardous cargo was shipped “on deck”
The sensitive components were air-freighted.
A team of technicians were on hand to assist with the loading in Durban and then flew to Angola
to assist with the unloading.
The project was coordinated in such a way, that all cargo reached its destination as planned.
The entire plant weighed 6000 tons and 15000 cbm including the containers.

24. Import Of 9 Locomotives From Tanzania to Durban For Transnet
Transnet in conjunction with Spoornet International Joint Ventures, leased 10 ,32 class locomotives
to Tanzania railways corporation for a period of 10 years.
The lease had expired and therefore these locomotives had to be returned. Unfortunately these
locomotives were impounded and set alight by the government entities and only after a successful
court order which took 5 years ,were these locomotives released .
All nine locomotives were pre staged on rail tracks about 5 km from the harbour.
Only 1 locomotive at a time was shunted into the harbour and loaded onto the vessel. The wharfs
in Tanzania could not take the weights of these locomotives.
Each loco weighed about 220 tons including the bogeys.
All nine locomotives were loaded on board the chartered break-bulk vessel, but it took 5 days to
load the vessel, due to weight restrictions at the Wharf.
Spoornet technicians were on hand to receive the vessel to assist with the unloading.
All 9 locomotives were then shunted to the local depot, where they were hitched to a live
locomotive and hauled to the refurbishment plant in Bloemfontein.
The total value of this project was ZAR 4.3 million
