Checkers Hyper Store to open Soon
In planning its brand new Checkers Hyper store
to be opened in Somerset West at the end of April
2014, Shoprite Checkers carefully researched con-
sumer preference and modern shopping habits.
It found the giant hypermarket concept spanning
massive floor space to be completely out-dated.
What today’s consumer wants is a one-stop shop-
ping destination, but coupled with convenience.
Shoprite Checkers therefore designed a new
generation super-duper Checkers Hyper for the
Helderberg region. Here consumers will find any-
thing from a bicycle to a bagel and can buy from
a camping gazebo to a Chianti straight from Italy,
complemented by fresh food service departments
offering high quality gourmet food – without having
to cover the large distances associated with the
shop floors of the hypermarkets of old.
Through the efficient use of space, the modern
Hyper concept has found a way to deliver the
value expected from a hypermarket on a full range
of consumer food and general merchandise under
According to a report by Chris Whit-
field Absa Cape Epic riders helped
press some grapes for the Meerendal
Wine Estate and those of the 1200
starters who make it to the finish will be
presented with a bottle of wine made
from those same grapes.
Thousands of the pinotage grapes
were packed into large reinforced plastic
bags and laid across a 10 metre section
of the course - as the riders emerged
from the part of the ride that took them
through the Meerendal Manor House
they rode across them.
The wine will be labelled as “Bigfeet
- pressed by bikes” and cellar master
Liza Goodwin said there would be a few
bottles left over after the Epic that would
be sold.
The idea, she said, was the brainchild
of Meerendal owner Herman Coertze.
And in case anybody might suggest he
was getting the riders to do his work,
Coertze was among the riders taking on
the eight days of the Cape Epic.
CAPE EPIC START - 2014
Riders make their own wine at Meerendal
one roof together with a more convenient shop-
ping experience. What emerged is a more
refined store that has the added benefit of being
more accessible as it is found inside shopping
centres with other complementary retail offer-
ings close to the suburbs.
As the anchor store of the new Helderberg
Centre, the Checkers Hyper will also serve the
surrounding Helderberg and Boland communi-
ties. Construction of the development adjacent
to the Somerset Mall is underway and promises
to complement and strengthen the retail offering
in the area.
The centre is well positioned with easy access
from both the Strand and Somerset West and
will have high visibility from the N2 highway,
situated in the triangle precinct.
The new centre is destined to provide an
exceptional shopping experience with the new
flagship Checkers Hyper.

departments that include butchery,
bakery, fish shop, a fresh fruit and veg-
etable department, sushi bar, coffee bar,
as well as a hot and cold foods deli. The
large delicatessen makes mealtimes
easy with speciality products and deli-
cious hot and cold prepared meals, cold
meats and salads. The store will also
offer an extended outdoor range pro-
viding a selection of equipment for all
outdoor and DIY enthusiasts at afford-
able prices.
The butchery will provide an extensive
range - from the delicious Champion-
ship Boerewors to top quality meat
cuts, sosaties and chops, and custom-
ers will find the superb Steakhouse
Classic range made from A-grade extra
matured grain-fed beef as well as Certi-
fied Natural Lamb from the Kalahari.
Wine connoisseurs will be able to
browse a wide selection of top quality
local wine from over 80 of SA’s leading
estates and 50 international wines at the
Checkers Wine Route. These can also
be paired with any one of the 400 spe-
ciality cheeses from the Cheese World.
A fully qualified pharmacist will also
be available in the in-store pharmacy,
MediRite, to attend to customers’ pre-
scriptions, and offer advice on the
managing of chronic medication, medi-
cation use, as well as the prevention
and treatment of other health related
matters.
The in-store Money Market kiosk
adds to the one-stop shop benefit of the
Hyper, where customers are able to buy
event tickets, bus and airline tickets;
book holiday packages, lotto tickets,
gift vouchers, as well as pay telephone,
electricity, DSTV and TV Licence
accounts and send money instantly to
any Shoprite or Checkers store in South
Africa.
Shoprite Checkers recently opened its
1000th supermarket in the group and
continues to expand all over the county.
A number of energy efficient elements
were incorporated in the design of the
store. The supermarket utilises more
energy efficient lighting throughout the
store and makes use of heat pumps
instead of geysers. All interior and exte-
rior illuminated signage use LED lighting
and the signs and parking lot lights are
activated by light sensors. Various engi-
neering concepts have been employed
to minimise sound pollution and the roof
insulation has been improved to reduce
heat radiation.
These elements will be included in all
future stores developed by the Group to
achieve environmental sustainability.
Checkers Hyper Store to be completed end of April 2014
The eleventh edition of the Absa Cape Epic kicked off on 23 March with a 23-kilo-
meter prologue at Meerendal Wine Estate in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The event
saw 1 200 excited riders from 50 countries enjoy cool weather with the first group
of riders starting their 8-day journey at 06:45.
This time trial was a race against the clock to decide the seeding in the field and
which teams would wear the coveted leader jerseys at the start of Stage 1 in Rob-
ertson. Other stage locations are Greyton and Oak Valley Wine Estate. Lourensford

Everything we touch turns to sold.
An ‘obstinate (but not foolish) refusal
to give up’ is the attitude that got a
Maties computer student into the final
round of the largest and most competi-
tive mainframe computing competition
in the world.
Rijnard van Tonder, an MSc student at
the MIH Media Lab and the Computer
Science division of the Department of
Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch
University, is one of 43 contestants from
around the world to go head-to-head in
the IBM Master the Mainframe World
Championship to be finalised from 5 to
9 April in New York. This is after they out
competed nearly 20 000 other contest-
ants from around the world.
According to an IBM media release,
the championship is designed to assem-
ble the best university students from
around the globe, who have demon-
strated superior technical skills through
participation in the regional contests.
The final round began on March 10
and students competed head-to-head
in “creative problem-solving for online
workloads, server applications and
systems programming on the main-
frame”.
On 5 April the finalists will travel to
New York City to showcase their appli-
cation to a panel of judges. The winners
will be announced at the IBM Mainframe
50 Anniversary event on April 8.
Rijnard says he decided to enter the
preliminary round, which ran from 5 Feb-
ruary to 3 March, because of his interest
in solving problems in the context of
computer systems. The competition
also required no prior experience in
mainframes and the prizes (from cus-
tom-made T-shirts to Google Nexus 10
tablets) looked good, he adds.
However, it was by no means easy,
as the challenges were time-consuming
and required perseverance: “Persever-
ance is a state that I would describe as
‘I'm completely stuck, I'm pressed for
time, I've tried everything, I'm tired, and
I've had enough!’ followed shortly there-
after by ‘It's time to try harder.’”
“It's an obstinate (but not foolish)
refusal to give up, and that's the atti-
tude that would help you most for this
type of competition, and programming in
general.”
He has stern advice for students
missing out on these kinds of opportu-
nities because of limited programming
skills: “I think students in South Africa
exaggerate the fact that programming is
too challenging. At first it is intimidating,
but like any other skill it develops over
time; and programming requires a large
initial investment of time. All around
the world the skill is being adopted
at a growing pace, and it is becoming
increasingly accessible to a variety of
disciplines”.
For Rijnard it is a privilege to be part
of this challenge, and he is especially
looking forward to staying in the inter-
nationally-renowned Waldorf Astoria on
Park Avenue in Manhattan, New York.
Later this year, he is heading off to Car-
negie Mellon University, where he has
been accepted to do doctoral research
in the topic that he is actually most inter-
ested in, computer security.
The MIH Media Lab at Stellen-
bosch University was founded with the
purpose to promote research in ‘new
media’ technology in South Africa. In
close partnership with MIH, the inter-
net division of Naspers, the MIH Media
Lab aims to participate in research on
next-generation technologies that will
influence the ways in which humans
interact with computers, the Web and
other forms of electronic media.

Removal of Adverse
Credit Information
Trade and Industry Minister Rob
Davies announced that South Africans
with paid-up default judgments against
their names at credit bureaus are set to
have their adverse records cleared in
the next few months.
The Department of Trade and Industry
(DTI) has published regulations for the
removal of Adverse Credit Information,
which as of 1 April 2014 indicates that
all adverse information of a consumer
who has paid up their debt is removed
from credit bureaus. The Minister stated
that they have two months thereafter to
clear up their systems.
Davies acknowledged fears that this
would heighten the risk and cost of credit,
but said the government was intent on
pushing ahead with the measure, which
will result in the debt rehabilitation of 1.6
million blacklisted consumers.
If there is terminology applying to you
saying you're a slow payer or irregular
payer, it must also be removed. The
regulations do not mean people who
did not pay their debts would be auto-
matically cleared. The credit profiles of
South Africans would still show on the
system, including information on how
many credit agreements people had
and how they were making payments
on loans or accounts.
Credit providers would still be able to
assess risk by looking at one's profile.
Those with paid-up judgements would
not have to approach a court and go
through various other processes before
the information was removed from their
credit profiles.
Among the critics have been the
Banking Association of SA and Moody's
ratings agency, which said it could
create a bigger risk of borrowers default-
ing because it would reduce the amount
of information available to banks.
The new regulation will result in the
immediate and ongoing rehabilitation of
blacklisted consumers who have paid
their debt, but are still prevented by
credit bureau listings from getting loans,
housing and sometimes jobs.
National Credit Regulator (NCR) chair-
person Trevor Bailey said the object
would not be to write off existing debt or
to enable people to take on more credit
if they could not afford it. Rather, it was
to give some of those blacklisted in the
past a clean slate so that they could
have access to housing and jobs. This
would stimulate economic growth.

Property in Stellenbosch is always
sought after, but it’s the student market
that keeps the market lively in good
and bad times. Estate agents in Stel-
lenbosch are hard pressed to keep up
with the demand for property to accom-
modate students in South Arica’s oldest
town.
Despite the half a percent increase
in interest rates, buying conditions in
the residential property market in Stel-
lenbosch remain positive says Andre
de Villiers of Coetzenburg Real Estate.
Residential market conditions are also
fueling a more sustained recovery in
property prices which recorded real

growth in prices in 2013. Together with
a noisy election there are still chal-
lenges ahead if or when rates increase
again. On the up side, banks are easing
their lending criteria in some areas, but
remain cautious.
Stellenbosch is an exceptionally beau-
tiful town surrounded by mountains
and vineyards of more than a hundred
wine farms, offering a lifestyle second

theme such as community interaction,
leadership, culture or media.
“The new buildings have been
designed in such a way that students
can utilise a variety of social spaces,”
explains Mr Pieter Kloppers, Director:
Student Structures and Communities.
“The trend now is smaller bedrooms
that are arranged for study and sleep,
and larger social areas where students
can interact as a smaller community.
The larger and more social spaces are
increasingly being shared with students
who live in private accommodation but
are in the same cluster.”
Mr Kloppers adds that the new build-
ings will enrich the campus experience
of students considerably by joining
the communities within the buildings
together in a network.
“The feeder routes to and from the
academic buildings bring students
together and have also been designed
to promote spontaneous encounters.
Among the aspects contributing to this
are the late-night cafés and the coffee
areas that can be booked that are
encountered on the path between the
buildings to the campus.”
The new extensions also boast an
informal outdoor stage – between the
new residence and Eendrag – while
the entrances to Huis Marais and Huis
Visser now face to the inside towards
the walkways between the residences,
rather than facing the street. Irene has
an additional entrance to the public
open space for students between the
new residences.
The residences can be accessed by
people with disabilities, and the new
residence and Irene now have lifts. Stu-
dents in private accommodation who
form part of the cluster may share some
of the residence facilities, but do not
necessarily have access to the rest of
the living areas in the residence.
Although the rooms and most of the
other indoor facilities of the new resi-
dence, the new LLL Houses and the
extensions to Irene, Huis Visser and
Huis Marais were completed at the end
of February, the target date for the com-
pletion of the rest of the building work is
end of March 2014.
With the completion of this building
project at the end of March 2014, the
new buildings and grounds will complete
a part of the campus master plan and be
a true asset for Stellenbosch University.

Do you need vaccinations
before travelling abroad?
It is important that immunizations,
preventative medications, and general
precautions should be considered
before travelling to different parts of the
world.
Travel vaccines are used to prevent
illness and disease while travelling. They
can range from typhoid fever, yellow
fever, malaria and many more. The
various vaccinations are administered
at least 4 - 12 weeks before travelling
to ensure enough time to develop an
immune response before exposure to
an illness or disease.
Vaccinations will vary from person to
person, depending on the following: the
country you will be visiting, the season,
your age, health condition, length of
your visit, and if you are staying in a
rural or urban area.
Although few immunizations are com-
pulsory for international travel, some are
recommended for the traveller’s protec-
tion. Many countries require you to have
a certificate confirming the various vac-
cinations.
Which vaccines you should get
before you travel
Vaccines that are necessary for
travel are divided into three categories:
routine, recommended and required
vaccinations.
Routine Vaccinations - Ensure that
you are up to date on your routine vacci-
nations. These vaccines are necessary
for protection from diseases that are still
common in many parts of the world like:
Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps and
Rubella, Diphtheria and Influenza (Flu).
Recommended Vaccinations
Recommended vaccines are travel
vaccinations that can protect you in
areas where there is a high risk for con-
tracting certain illnesses or infectious
diseases. They also help prevent the
spread of diseases from one country to
another.
Required Vaccinations
The only vaccine required by Interna-
tional Health Regulations is the yellow
fever vaccination for travel to certain
parts of Africa and South America.
Most important vaccinations for
Travellers
Here is a list of vaccines that are rec-
ommended for international travellers
as well as the areas reflecting a high risk
for contracting certain illnesses or infec-
tious diseases.
Hepatitis A - An infection of the liver
caused by the hepatitis A virus. This
viral infection spreads through contami-
nated food, water, shellfish, or person to
person contact where poor hygiene is
common. Areas most common: Africa,
India, North and South America, South
East Asia & Eastern Europe.
Hepatitis B - An infection of the liver
caused by the hepatitis B virus. This
virus is transferred from one person
to another through infected body fluid,
such as blood contact, infected medical
equipment and sexual transmission.
Areas most common: Africa, China,
Southeast Asia and India.
Typhoid Fever - This disease may
be contracted through contaminated
drinking water or food or by consum-
ing food or beverages that have been
handled by an infected person. Areas
most common: Africa, India, Americas,
Eastern Europe and most parts of Asia.
Yellow Fever - This infection leads
to the degeneration of kidney and liver
tissues. Yellow fever is spread through
infectious mosquitoes. It causes very
serious illness and usually death. Areas
most common: Parts of Africa and
South America.
Japanese Encephalitis - This type
of viral brain infection is transmitted by
the bite of an infected mosquito. Areas
most common: Asia, India, China,
Japan, Southeast Asia, the Philippines,
or Pacific Islands.
Rabies - A very serious disease that
most people get by way of a bite inflicted
by a dog, a bat, a monkey, a skunk or
a raccoon. Areas most common: Africa,
Southern America and Asia.
Malaria - Malaria is an infectious
blood disease caused by the bite of the
female Anopheles mosquito that injects
parasites into the human bloodstream
and infects the red blood cells. Areas
most common: Africa, Asia, Central or
South America.
Meningitis - Meningitis is a serious
infectious illness which affects your
brain and spinal cord. Areas most
common: Parts of Africa, Saudi Arabia,
Northern Pakistan, Northern India and
parts of South America.

The Stellenbosch American Express
® Wine Routes, South Africa’s first
and foremost wine route and gourmet
capital of the country, made its debut at
the 2014 ITB, Berlin earlier this month.
ITB is the world’s largest tourism con-
vention and was the perfect platform for
the global launch of the region’s wine
tourism marketing campaign, Stellen-
bosch Experience.
The aim of this dynamic campaign
is to reaffirm Stellenbosch as the wine
tourism capital of South Africa and the
ideal hub from where to explore Cape
Town and the Western Cape, and from
5 till 9 March, representatives from
the granddaddy of South African Wine
Routes met with top trade and media to
showcase the area’s diverse and unpar-
alleled wine tourism offerings.
The Stellenbosch team engaged face
to face with close to 400 members of the
travel trade and media during the three-
day event in Berlin. A highlight of the
global launch activities at ITB was col-
laborating with TripAdvisor for their ITB
networking event held at the popular
Soho House in East Berlin. The event
was by invitation only and attended by
300 of the top international trade and
Wine Tourism Campaign
Goes Global
industry representatives.
The latest global tourism travel results
and trends, which were released at ITB
confirm a rosier outlook for tourism in
2014. The good news for South Africa
is that Europe, still the country’s biggest
source market, is expected to show
solid growth in 2014 on the back of a
two-year period of economic depres-
sion.
“This is good news for tourism growth
in Stellenbosch, but it means we have
to respond with innovative, enticing
travel offers to a world that is spoilt for
choice, easily influenced and still under
economic pressure. We believe the
Stellenbosch Experience campaign is
well timed to attract more visitors to our
region,” said Annareth Bolton, CEO of
the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.
Other Stellenbosch Experience cam-
paign elements planned for the rest of
the year, include an innovative wine
tourism blogger campaign with top inter-
national and national travel, lifestyle and
food bloggers that kicks off at the end of
April, just before the campaign is show-
cased at Indaba from 10-12 May 2014.

PROPOSED GORDON’S BAY OUTLOOK POST
Another lifestyle and popular regional,
national and global tourist attraction is
on the cards for the Helderberg Basin.
Piet Maré recently concluded a study
on the possibility and feasibility of a
Tourist Outlook Post on the slopes of the
Hottentots Holland Mountains slightly
above and to the west of Gordon’s Bay
Harbour overlooking False Bay.
The proposed tourist attraction, is
in line with some of the most exiting
tourism sites Cape Town has to offer.
The site is easily accessible from the
R44 and the N2 with an entry point at
Steenbras dam above Gordon’s Bay.
People of all ages including the disabled
would be able to enjoy the facility. The
hospitality and tourist industry in particu-
lar, can most definitely benefit from this
attraction.
From this point most of False Bay
is visible. It includes the whole of the
Helderberg, the areas of Sir Lowry’s
Pass, Gordon’s Bay, Strand and Som-
erset West. In the distance Macassar,
Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Muizen-
berg, Fishhoek, and Simon’s Town also
loom on the horizon with Table Moun-
tain as backdrop, and Cape Point to the
west.
The entire project is eco-friendly.
No excavations will be required as
the terrain is flat which is ideal for
viewing purposes. It is envisaged that
the Outlook Post will consist of a free
standing wooden cabin structure, with a
wooden deck. On the deck three power-
ful telescopes will enhance quality close
up viewing of the broad spectrum of the
spectacular scenery.
It may also be noted that emphasis
will be on nature conservation, history,
tourist information and events in the
Helderberg and bigger False Bay area.
The Outlook Post will be compli-
mented by a kiosk which will provide
light snacks, cool drinks local art paint-
ings/handcraft and memorabilia e.g.
T-Shirts, caps, coffee mugs, carry
bags, key holders etc. for visitors to the
Outlook Post.
Piet Maré’s research has been well
received and is supported by the Pro-
vincial Minister of Finance, Economic
Development and Tourism (Alan Winde)
the Ward Councilor of Gordon’s Bay
(Johan Middleton), Gordon’s Bay Busi-
ness Forum, the Rotary Club of Gordon’s
Bay and numerous guest houses in the
Helderberg.
He states that nowhere in the False
Bay/Helderberg area there is a more
suitable point to appreciate the sur-
roundings and the beauty nature has
to offer, not to mention the spectacular
sunrises and sunsets.

8. LIFESTYLE THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 8
Wine Maker of the Month
John Faure, the Cellar Master
at Vergenoegd is the 6th Gen-
eration Faure making wine on the
Vergenoegd Wine Estate.
History claims that Van der Stel
crossed the sandy wastelands from
Cape Town in the direction of Verge-
noegd and at the first river, which he
named the Eerste River he met some
Strandlopers. He then followed the
river up-stream to where he proclaimed
the village he named Stellenbosch.
Van der Stel then settled Dutch farmers
on farms alongside the Eerste River
where Pieter de Vos in 1696 became
the first Dutch Settler to be awarded
ownership of the farm he named
Vergenoegd, meaning “satisfaction
has been achieved”.
The Faure’s came to the Cape of Good
Hope with the French Huguenots, and
in 1820 took ownership of Vergenoegd
where they have been making wine
ever since. The farm Zandvliet was
also owned by a member of the Faure
Family, and is today known as Macas-
sar.
The original farm was 600 hectare. It
has since been reduced to 300 ha with
the Cape Town Studios being located
on land which was part of the original
farm.
Presently John is farming 70ha of
vines, and produces about 500 tons of
grapes, with the entire harvest worked
through the cellar. Large volume of
wine is sold off and only the best is
retained by John and bottled under the
Vergenoegd Label.
In his own words John said, “I have a
lot of respect for the history and believe
that wines are made in the vineyards.
Growing up on a family farm with gen-
erations of knowledge passed down,
you start with such an advantage over
a winemaker that would come here and
then try and make the best wine he can
make. You are not going to get it right in
one or two years. We are blessed with
the handed down knowledge which is a
huge factor.”
JohnobtainedhisdiplomaatElsenburg
and graduated in 1983. He respected
his father’s success and knowledge and
did not start immediately implementing
everything that he had learned. Over the
years they started experimenting and
blending modern techniques with tried
and tested traditional practices.
Traditionally winemaking was made
according to a recipe but now they
evaluate each season and adapt the
“recipe”. These traditional winemaking
techniques were characterised by the
odd/even year phenomena, when fol-
lowing these standard recipes, evident
during the vintages of the 70’s and 80’s.
If they see it’s a cool year, they might
pick a little later and give a longer skin
contact than in a warmer year. 1989 was
the first odd year that broke the trend of
even years being better than the odd
years. The climate is no longer as rel-
evant as winemaking has adapted to get
the best out of each vintage.
Vergenoegd, by being a family farm,
has ensured that during the last 20
years there was only one winemaker at
Vergenoegd, and over the last 50 years
only 2 winemakers. This helps in con-
sistency and heritage.
Famous Runner Duck Parade
A childhood passion of ducks control-
ling snails in the vineyards has turned
not only into a non-invasive farming
practice, but also, into an environment
friendly working force. These Indian
Runner Ducks under the watchful eye of
their “Duck Master” march off daily into
the vineyards to forage for snails and
insects thereby limiting the use of pes-
ticides. There are between 800 - 1000
Runner Ducks “contracted” to work the
vineyards. Tourists from all walks of life
come to view the Runner Duck Parade,
The factor that helps John the most
in producing excellent wines is that the
soils are poor which enhances concen-
tration in the vines, with a lot of wind off
the False Bay coast that not only cools
the grape, and curbs the vigour of the
vines. Vines at Vergenoegd are not as
vigorous as further into Stellenbosch
area.
Vergenoegd produces two ranges of wines. The first is the
Classic Range with its Vergenoegd traditional label, bottled as the
Vergenoegd Estate Blend, the Vergenoegd Cabernet Sauvignon,
the Vergenoegd Shiraz, the Vergenoegd Merlot, the Vergenoegd
Terrace Bay, and the Vergenoegd Old Cape Colony Vintage Port.
The second is the Runner Duck Range, labelled the Runner Duck
Red, the Runner Duck White, and Runner Duck Rose.
The Runner Duck Red is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Cabernet
franc and Malbech. The white is a Sauvignon Blanc, a more tropi-
cal easy drinking wine. The Rose is made from their red grapes – a
more full body Rose. When the red grapes are ripe, they are har-
vested, left on the skins for a day, and only thereafter is one third of
the juice drained off and kept separate.
The best expression of Vergenoegd is the flagship Bordeaux
styled Estate Blend, a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
and, Cabernet frank. The Terrace Bay blend is “Vergenoegd in a
bottle”, if you don’t know Vergenoegd Wines the Terrace Bay will
give you an idea what the rest of the range is like.
Awards
During the 60’s Vergenoegd planted Cabernet Sauvignon, which was relatively unheard of in the Cape at that stage. In the
early 70’s they received the General Jan Smuts Trophy for the best wine on show with Cabernet Sauvignon and went on to
win the trophy 4 years in a row. This set them on the road to bottling wine under their own name.
Today their focus is more on the bottled wine shows where members of the public can buy the wine. Vergenoegd sells one
third of its wines from the farm, a second third to the local trade, and the last third to the International market. Even though
their wines are well received in Europe, their biggest export market currently is China.
For more information visit www.vergenoegd.co.za or call 021 843 3248.
and even indulge in a breathtaking lunch
experience at the Restaurant.
Coupled with the poor soils and the
wind reducing growth the vines produce
small berries with thick skins. In red
wine production it is all about the skins.
The flavour and the colour are all in the
skins.
For the past 45 years Vergenoegd has
been bottling their wine under their own
label. It was consistent from year to year
as they only bottle the best. Consistency
has been very even over the years and
in a poor year they were able to produce
at least 2 tanks.
Vergenoegd produces only red wines,
and sells quite a lot of bulk wine. Only
15% of its best wine is bottled annually.
Grapes for the production of the Runner
Duck White Wine are the only cultivar
that is not grown on the farm. These
grapes are either bought in or swopped
with red grapes. Runner Duck White
Wine is produced in the Vergenoegd
Cellars.

Our bodies should naturally detoxify
daily as part of a normal body process
and is one of the body’s basic func-
tions. Body systems and organs were
once capable of clearing out unwanted
substances but now are completely
overloaded to the point where toxins
remain inside our body tissues.
Detoxification through COLONICS
and cleansing diets is the best way to
assist your body’s natural self-cleaning
system.
It is especially important for immune-
compromised diseases like arthritis,
diabetes and chronic fatigue.
However, even if your diet is good,
a spring cleanse can revitalize your
system and rid your body of harmful
bacteria, viruses and parasites in a
simple three step process:
Detoxification - This process cleans
out mucous and toxins from the intesti-
nal tract and major organs.
Cleansing - herbal cleansers assist
Do you need to Detox?
your body in cleansing the colon of accu-
mulated toxic build up and impacted
fecal matter and helps prevent the for-
mation of new build-up.
Colon hydrotherapy - or colonic irri-
gation is a safe and effective method of
removing waste from the large intestine
without the use of drugs.
During a colonic filtered water is intro-
duced into the bowel. This softens and
loosens the feces resulting in natural
evacuation.
Other ways to assist the detox process
are:
Exercise - This helps improve circu-
lation, expel toxins and relax the body
and mind by stimulating the release of
endorphins.
Dry brushing - before your daily
shower brush your skin from head to toe
using small quick circular movements.
Hydration - drink fresh spring or

Cranes dot the sky along the R44 approaching Strand, as the construction of two new medical
facilities proceed in full swing in the Heartlands De Beers Precinct in Somerset West. The
larger of the two is a fully-fledged acute hospital, which is being developed by Busamed, an
NEF public-funded company. The smaller of the two construction sites is the new home of the
Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre, a prestigious private Day Hospital and Ophthalmic Clinic
set to open its doors to the public in September 2014.
The Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre is the product of a small group of specialists who
envisaged a medical facility that would be owned and managed by the doctors who operate in
it, and that would rival the best in the world in terms of patient care, affordability, patient, doctor
and staff comfort, technology and prestige.
To realise their dream, the group which originally comprised of 5 Ophthalmologists and an
Anaesthetist, and now includes Ear, Nose and Throat, as well as Maxillo-Facial specialists,
partnered with Cure Day Clinics, one of the best in terms of expertise and experience in the
operation of Day Hospital facilities, to form CDC Somerset West.
This partnership will be in charge of the day-to-day operation and management of the Day
Hospital, and has as its goal the provision of more affordable and efficient, and therefore more
accessible, private healthcare. Cure Day Clinics have already opened, and are currently oper-
ating, successful Day Hospitals in Erasmuskloof, Medkin, Midstream and most recently, Paarl.
Furthermore, the original group of medical specialists teamed up with local property heav-
yweights, including Lazercor Developments, to form CJM Investments (Pty) Ltd, a private
development company tasked with initiating and overseeing the design, development and con-
struction of the Medical Centre.
An approximately 600m2
dedicated Ophthalmic Clinic will also be established in the Centre,
where 5 local ophthalmologists will be able to share specialized facilities and equipment
between their individual practices in order to provide better, more efficient and more affordable
quality care to both new and existing patients.
Additional sectional title purchasers in the Medical Centre scheme include a Radiology Unit
and Pathology Lab, and the developers are currently in negotiations with a small exclusive
Dialysis Centre. The Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre welcomes all surgical disciplines
that are suited to Day Hospitals, including gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery,
urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, laparo-, arthro- and hysteroscopies, certain orthopaedic
procedures and dental and general surgery. The Centre is also open to investor-purchasers
and suitable tenants.

World Health Day is celebrated nationally and internationally on 7 April to mark
the founding of World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948.
Each year a theme is selected that highlights a priority area of public health. The
Day provides an opportunity for individuals in every community to get involved in
activities that can lead to better health.
The World Health Day 2014 campaign focuses on some of the most commonly
known vectors and the diseases they cause and what we can all do to protect our-
selves. Vectors are small organisms such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bugs, ticks and
freshwater snails that can carry disease from person to person and place to place.
They can put our health at risk, at home and when travelling.
It is important that travellers know how to protect themselves from these diseases
when travelling to countries where there is a health threat.

Wine Auction Raises
Over R7 Million For Education
The inaugural 2014 AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction, which took place on Sat-
urday 15th March, witnessed the remarkable realisation of a bold dream when an
astounding R7.045 million was raised for education in the Cape Winelands.
In a grand marquee on the majestic Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch, 250
prominent local and international wine aficionados as well as online bidders were
invited to make a serious difference when 40 once-in-a-lifetime Auction lots came
under the enthusiastic hammer of auctioneers Iain Banner and Paul Myson.
The astonishing line-up of lots included rare wine collections as well as exclusive
hand-selected local and international wine, gourmet and travel experiences.
Highlights of the day included an art cameo by talented artist John Adams whose
live 8-minute surprise portrait of Nelson Mandela fetched a staggering R460 000 on
the Auction. Other lots fetching phenomenally high prices were: The Mulderbosch
& Fable Mountain Vineyards American Dream Lot: R700 000; The Glenelly Estate
Lot: R450 000 and The DeMorgenzon & Royal Portfolio Lot: R400 000.
The Auction beneficiaries, the Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity and the Click
Foundation, together with The Cape Wine Auction Trustees Michael Jordaan, Ken
Kinsey-Quick, Wendy Appelbaum, Siobhan Thompson and Michael Ratcliffe, will
now have the resources to take the first steps towards changing people’s lives
through the powerful tool of education.

hul sakeplan. Rob Davies, die minister
van handel en nywerheid, het onlangs
aangetoon dat bykans vyf uit elke sewe
nuwe klein besighede jaarliks in die stof
byt.
Die 2014-sakeplankompetisie spog
sover met vennote soos Investec
Batebestuur, die Atterbury Groep, die
ATKV, Mentor 24, Maroela Media, Busi-
ness Partners, eNuus en Sake van
Media24. Verskeie AHI-sakekamers
soos die CCBC in Pretoria, die groter
Tygerberg Sakekamer, asook die
provinsiale AHI-streke in die Wes-Kaap
en Vrystaat ondersteun reeds hierdie
opbouende projek.
Die 2014-kompetisie het groot pryse
op die spel. Semi-finaliste in die kom-
petisie woon werkswinkels gratis by
waartydens hul sakeplan kennis deur
kenners op hierdie gebied uitgebou
word. Belangstellendes word daaraan
herinner dat die sluitingsdatum vir
inskrywings 19 Mei 2014 is.
Belangstellendes skryf in deur ʼn sake-
idee aanlyn in te dien.
Vir meer inligting oor die kompetisie en
seminare, asook registrasie vir hierdie
geleenthede, kan Akademia se webblad
besoek word by www.akademia.ac.za.

The Private Hotel School outside Stel-
lenbosch and Kayamandi High School
have agreed to take Kayamandi learners
for practical experience and exposure
in some culinary disciplines that will
aid them in their Hospitality Studies at
school.
“The Private Hotel School is aware of
its responsibility to share resources and
knowledge with the community,” says
Susina Jooste, director academic devel-
opment.
“We thoroughly enjoy the interaction
with learners from Kayamandi, but also
the other schools in the area, and see
this as the perfect opportunity to inspire
them to consider the hospitality and
food industries as career option.”
In addition, their popular Chefs on the

A “CONCRETE” SOLUTION
South Africa’s and Africa’s first hi-tech
solar plant was officially opened in Stel-
lenbosch’s technology hub, Technopark,
with a ribbon-cutting and plaque-unveil-
ing ceremony by the Minister of Science
and Technology, Derek Hanekom, 28
February 2014.
The plant will serve as a demonstration
facility for the production and marketing
of a thin-film solar module that provides
an effective way to convert solar energy
into electricity.
The opening by the Minister follows
the inauguration of the plant’s equip-
ment earlier the month by joint venture
partners Photovoltaic Technology
Intellectual Property (PTiP), a local tech-
nology development and intellectual
holding company, and Singulus Tech-
nologies, a listed German engineering
company.
PTiP, a spin-off company of the Uni-
versity of Johannesburg (UJ), is the first
company in
South Africa to convert basic raw
materials through 15 production pro-
cesses into a fully integrated solar
energy product — all under one roof.
The new generation thin-film photo-
voltaic technology was fully developed
in South Africa and will be produced
at Technopark, Stellenbosch. The
module includes a unique homogenous
semi-conductor alloy, comprising five
chemical elements. The total thickness
of the active materials in the thin-film
module is only 3 microns, compared
to the traditional first generation silicon
technology with a thickness of more
than 300 microns.
The development of the technology
was initiated by the Physics Department
of UJ in 1993, led by Prof Vivian Alberts,
who is the CEO of PTiP. The facility cur-
rently employs 10 people, excluding
building and equipment contractors.
Stellenbosch is an environment that
offers expertise for the commercialisa-
tion of the technology and to present it
to the world. The aim is now to establish
a fully-fledged photovoltaic industry, to
train people and to stimulate job crea-
tion in the industry.

the individual. Decorex Cape Town is a
must-see for anyone with plans on the
home décor and design front.
It is the end of the era where one-
dimensional concepts of design dictate
that we should live in a home that is, for
example, either minimalist or baroque.
No-one should be driving our style but
ourselves and how we choose to live
has become an entirely personal choice.
DESIGN YOUR LIFE WITH DECOREX CAPE TOWN
fastest growing industries in the world.
In 2011, thin-film solar photovoltaic
technology accounted for 11% of market
share. Strong further growth in this tech-
nology is expected.
This new, modern era has resulted
in a more realistic approach to life and
we love the fact that designers all over
the world are translating this movement
into objects and concepts that target the

A recent visit to Celmar confirmed their ability to provide the market with high
quality products. Celmar has been in the concrete manufacturing business since
1973 and has subsequently become the largest manufacturer and supplier of
precast concrete walling and pavers in the Western Cape.
Celmar possesses the most singled out Automated Wetcast Machine in the
world for the manufacturing of precast walling. This machine is able to control the
aggregate mixture whereby the production of top quality products is secured. For
this reason they developed an improved dispatch centre in order that clients may
receive their goods without delay.
It is no surprise that they offer a “concrete” solution to the everyday need when
it has to do with securing property and the erecting of precast walls. They pride
on using only the latest technology and focus heavily on the strength, durability,
consistency, and the quality of their products.

BIKE PARK OPENS
to the public
Finally the moment that all 2013 FNB
Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike
(MTB) riders have been waiting for, is
the opening of the spectacular Amphi
Bike Park at Paul Cluver to the public.
“A key FNB W2W MTB passion is to
create and maintain MTB Trails that are
scenic, safe and adventurous,” says
Johan Kriegler, FNB W2W MTB Direc-
tor.
“Recently the Cluver family of the Paul
Cluver Wine Estate has partnered with
us, to build one of the most exciting MTB
trail projects in South Africa, the Paul
Cluver and FNB W2W MTB Bike Park,
situated in the Amphitheatre at Paul
Cluver. Dr Cluver always had a passion
for wood work and creative ideas. He
co-opted Anton Potgieter, who is well
known for his eco-bridges in South
Africa, to oversee the construction of the
Pedal Power Association (PPA) swing,
Raka, Slangpark, the resurrection of
Pofadder and Witklippieskloof”.
The unique bridges at Paul Cluver
Wine Estate have been elected as one
of the design projects for the interna-
tional World Design Capital Cape Town
2014. Adding to its uniqueness is the
alien wood (blue gum, black wattle and
black wood) that was used in construc-
tion of these magnificent bridges. The
alien trees in the amphitheatre were
replaced by indigenous trees.
The bike park has three sections, the
7km MTB Loop, 1km technical play park
and 30km(Red) and 35km (Black). All
three sections start and finish at the
same spot, within the Amphitheatre.

For the dedicated fans
On 19 April 2014, Jeremy Hazell will
attempt to become the first person to
complete the 56km Old Mutual Two
Oceans Marathon (OMTOM) in his
regular wheelchair, fitted only with a
third accessory wheel for improved
steering and maneuverability.
In taking on this challenge, Jeremy
hope to raise funds for The Rachel
Swart Fund and Senecio, two Non-profit
Organisations. Senecio is an organisa-
tion which provides support for people
with disabilities from underprivileged
communities in the Helderberg region.
“These are charities close to my heart,

The I Play Fair initiative is about
making a commitment to drug-free
sport whether you are an athlete,
supporter or coach.
The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport
(SAIDS) announced last month that the
president of SA Sports Confederation
and Olympic Committee (SASCOC),
Mr. Gideon Sam, will be leading the
Institute’s I Play Fair team for the 2014
Old Mutual Two Oceans half-marathon
taking place on the 19th April in Cape
Town.
Sam will be running for the Institute’s
proactive education campaign ‘I Play
Fair – Say No! To Doping’, which aims
to establish a culture of fair play in sport.
Institute of Drug-Free Sport:
“Drug-Free Sport is a public entity
that promotes participation in sport
that is free from the use of prohib-
ited substances or methods intended
to artificially enhance performance,
thereby rendering impermissible doping
practices, which are contrary to the prin-
ciples of fair play and medical ethics, in
the interest of the health and well-being
of sports persons.
The institute’s efforts include anti-
doping strategy in sport; education on
drugs in sport; and collaboration with
other national anti-doping agencies
throughout the world. The Drug-Free
Sport Act grants the Institute for Drug-
Free Sport statutory drug testing powers
and the authority to conduct and enforce
a national anti-doping programme”.
The Institute is encouraging all South
African sportsmen and women, coaches
and fans to take the ‘I Play Fair – Say
NO! To Doping’ pledge by visiting

their disabilities,” says Jeremy.
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Mara-
thon will present him with the greatest
athletic challenge he has undertaken
since being paralysed in an accident on
Table Mountain 16 years ago.
After 13 years of inactivity and declin-
ing health Jeremy was inspired by an
article Tim Noakes wrote on the famous
low-carb high-fat diet and decided to
revitalise his health and start exercising
seriously, losing 30 kg.
In 2012 and 2013 Jeremy completed
the OMTOM Half Marathon of 21 km
and the Peninsula Marathon of 42km in
a time of 4h41m. On 16 February 2014
he completed the Peninsula Marathon
under five hours to qualify his entry for the Two
Oceans. During events, Jeremy uses a clip-on
third wheel called a Free Wheel, but does not use
a racing wheelchair.
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, draws
sporting enthusiasts from across the globe to the
scenic Cape Peninsula for a unique athletic expe-
rience. This year 11 000 runners will take part in
the Ultra marathon (56km) while 16 000 runners
will compete in the half marathon.
The full marathon kicks off on Main Road, New-
lands and continues through Muizenberg, Fish
Hoek, over the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak
Drive, through Hout Bay, over Constantia Nek
before ending at the UCT Rondebosch campus.
