Philippine folk dances originated from the traditions of indigenous tribes and were influenced by Spanish and Muslim cultures. There are five major classifications of Philippine folk dances: Cordillera dances from mountain tribes known for gong music and rituals; Spanish-influenced dances incorporating European styles; Muslim dances using intricate movements and costumes; Tribal dances reflecting crafts, spirits, and nature; and Rural dances performed in festivals depicting work and community. Regional costumes vary but commonly include patadyong skirts, malong shawls, and barong shirts. Folk dances are culturally significant as they have been passed down for generations expressing Philippine history, religion, and way of life.
