Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance that originated during the Spanish colonial era in Leyte. It imitates the movement of tikling birds walking and running between grass stems and tree branches. The dance involves two people tapping and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles to the music traditionally played by a rondalla string ensemble. Female dancers typically wear colorful balintawak dresses with wide sleeves or a patadyong, while males wear an untucked embroidered Barong Tagalog shirt.
