made more colorful, beautiful and vibrant
because of Folk Dances that are reflection of
who they are.
● Folk Dance is a cultural art form handed down
from generation to generations.
● It communicates the customs, beliefs, rituals,
and occupations of the people of a region or
country.
4. ● Philippine folk dance has a long and diverse history. Each
region in the Philippines features its own folk dances,
originating from the precolonial era to the time of the Spanish
occupation from the 1500s until the late 1800s.
● Most of these Filipino folk dances tell stories about historical
happenings, ways of life, cultural influences and religious
customs.
● The traditional recreational dance of an indigenous society
showing the cultural characteristics of a specific people at a
given time and place.

lives, a good harvest, health, peace. War and other symbols of living. A
people whose way of life existed long before and Spaniard or other
foreigners stepped foot on the Philippines.

Ifugaos, Benguets, Apayao, Kalinga,

Kinakulangan – among Maranao, is danced with the use of

Sagayan – is a war dance which dramatizes the hero-warrior

Pang-alay – from Jolo Sulu, portrays the varied life activities
of the people
9. Tribal Dance – reflects rituals & animals, belief in “spirits” & shamans’
nature – “anito”. Animal sounds, human singing, indigenous materials.
Also known as Ethnic dances: Ethnic minorities found in different parts
of Philippines (T’boli, Bilaan, manobo, Bagobo, etc.). Intricates

This famous dance mimics the movements
of the tikling bird, as dancers skillfully
navigate between bamboo poles that are
rhythmically tapped together.

13. Asik
Asik is solo dance performance portrays an
unmarried young woman who tries to gain
the approval and support of her sultan
master. She can dance for two reasons.
The first is to try to win the heart of her
master and the second is to be able to
make up for a mistake she has done.
In this dance, the performer dances and
poses in doll like motions and is dressed
with fine beads, long metal finger nails, and
heavy make-up.

14. Tiklos Once a week they would gather to clean the
forest, till the soil, do farm work, etc. Every
noon time, after the peasants have eaten and
started to rest, the Tiklos is usually performed.

Subli It is a ceremonial dance performed in fiestas
every May in homage to Mahal Na Poong
Santa Cruz. The name comes from the
Tagalog words “subsub” (stooped) and “bali”
(broken). Hence, the male dancers are
positioned in a “trunk-forward-bend” way
seemingly lame and crooked throughout the
dance.
