Situation Analysis/Background Information
Since the Aids epidemic began, the number of
orphans and other vulnerable children has
increased considerably.
Like a bottomless pit, it is becoming quite difficult
to provide adequate care and support as
resources and capacities have been stretched to
breaking point.
Neither words nor statistics could adequately
capture the human tragedy of children grieving for
dying or dead parents, children stigmatized by
society through association with HIV/Aids,
plunged into economic crisis and insecurity by the
death of there bread winners and struggling
without services and support systems in
impoverished community.

Situation Analysis/Background Information CONT’D
The distress and social isolation experienced by these
children, both before and after the death of there parents are
strongly exacerbated by shame, fear and rejection.
Because of the stigma and often irrational fear surrounding
AIDS, some children have been denied access to schooling,
health care, inheritance and property rights. HIV/Aids
affected children begin to experience loss, sorrow and
suffering long before and after the death of their parents.
Children who lived through their parent’s pain and illness
frequently suffer from depression, stress and anxiety
besides the long periods of uncertainty and intermittent
crises.
Poverty situation was multi dimensional and required
context specific analysis.
