HOPE worldwide Kenya began in 2002 with 2 volunteers and a $1,700 monthly budget and has since expanded significantly. It now has 129 full time local staff and programs focused on health, HIV services, water/sanitation, community development, and youth livelihoods. Their mission is to improve quality of life for underserved communities through youth and child programs. They described their Kenya Kids sponsorship program which provides children and families with education, health insurance, nutrition, and small business support for $30/month.

2. In the Beginning…
I did not ‘Dream of Africa’!

3. And the journey began in Somaliland in May 2000 -
no money, no supplies – only a dream…in the eyes of

5. The love affair with Africa was in full force!

6. And then came Kenya

8. In 2002 (in Kenya) we started with:
• 2 full time volunteers, and a monthly budget of about
USD 1,700 – this included salaries and programs!
In 2017 we have:
• 129 full time staff
• 285 short term contract staff
• 480+ community workers, and
• 9 Ministry of Health Staff
• All the staff are Kenyan (except me)

1. Health and HIV Services Increase access to comprehensive HIV

adolescent girls, young women, key
populations and people living with HIV
2. Reduced Water Borne Diseases Design and implement programs that
improve access to clean water and
facilities in areas where we work to
water-borne diseases and improve the
health of youth and children in their
communities.
3. Strong Community Health and Related
Structures
Create and strengthen community
structures that are responsive, sustainable
and effectively supporting citizens and
their communities to address their health
and developmental challenges.
4. Improved Livelihoods Work with youth and child caregivers in
underserved communities to improve
entrepreneurship and vocational skills to
enable them start businesses and/or get
jobs, and get microfinance opportunities.

14. Sanitary Towels For Every Girl (6 USD provides a year’s
supply of sanitary supplies for 1 girl – they often miss school
because in some communities pads are a luxury item)

17. Kenya Kids is a sponsorship program through which
orphaned and vulnerable children; and their families
access strategic support to achieve economic stability
and improve their livelihood.
30 dollars a month will provide each sponsored child
with:
Education Support- school-fees, school uniform, school
supplies
Health Support for his/her family – National Health
Insurance cards
Nutritional support for his/her family
Start up capital for his/her caregiver’s Income
Generating Activity
We are working to add a pen-pal system to this
where children and their sponsors can communicate
through letters twice a year.
