Work-Based Learning
Work-based learning refers to a continuum of
activities, both in and outside the classroom,
that provide opportunities for students to
connect what they are learning in the
classroom to the world of work; to learn about
careers and the education and training
requirements for occupations within and across
industries; to identify career interests and
aptitudes, and to use the workplace for both
learning and applying college- and career-
readiness skills and knowledge.

NAF Standards for Work-Based Learning
STANDARD 1: PROVIDES A WORK-BASED LEARNING PROGRAM
All students complete a sequenced set of work-based learning
experiences as defined by the Internship Gold Standards.
STANDARD 2: INTERNSHIP COMPLETION
The academy develops and sustains a program of compensated
internships for all students.
STANDARD 3: STUDENTS’ CAREER GOALS
Students, teaching staff and internship providers collaborate to
support the student’s career goals.

STANDARD 1: ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERSHIP AND OPERATIONS
A formally organized advisory board operates with broad-based
community representation.
STANDARD 2: SUPPORT FOR LEARNING
Advisory board members actively support teachers and help students
attain increased levels of college and career readiness.
STANDARD 3: SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The advisory board supports the development and sustainability of the
academy.

  • 4. #nafnext NAF’s Definition of Work-Based Learning Work-based learning refers to a continuum of activities, both in and outside the classroom, that provide opportunities for students to connect what they are learning in the classroom to the world of work; to learn about careers and the education and training requirements for occupations within and across industries; to identify career interests and aptitudes, and to use the workplace for both learning and applying college- and career- readiness skills and knowledge.

STANDARD 3: STUDENTS’ CAREER GOALS Students, teaching staff and internship providers collaborate to support the student’s career goals.
