PRESENTATION TOPIC……
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TISSUES
IN PLANTS………
____OUTLINES____
• What is tissue
• Plant tissues
• Primary and secondary tissues
• Meristematic tissues
• Kinds of meristematic tissue
• Permanent tissue
• Types of permanent tissues
___WHAT IS TISSUE___
• A group of closely
associated cells that
perform related
funcation and similar
in structure is called
tissues
___PLANT TISSUES____
• Tissue in the plants that divide through out the life
• Plant tissues classified as
Meristematic
tissue
Permanent
Tissue
___PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TISSUES__
• Primary growth is controlled by root apical meristem
or shoot apical meristem
• Secondary growth is controlled by the two lateral
meristem, called the vascular cambium and the cork
cambium
__MERISTEMATIC TISSUES___
• The growth of plant occur in certain specific region
• This is because of dividing tissues
• Known as meristematic tissues
• Composed of actively dividing cells
• Resposible for production of cells
___MERISTEMATIC TISSUES__
• Capacity for division is restricted to certain part of the
plant body called meristem
• Which is active throughout the life of the plant body
• There are different type of meristematic tissue
__KINDS OF MERISTEMATIC TISSUE___
• There are three types of meristematic tissue
Apical meristem
Lateral meristem
Intercallary
meristem
___KINDS OF MERISTEMATIC TISSUE___
• APICAL MERISTEM…
• Found at the tip of root and shoot
• LATERAL MERISTEM…..
• a.k.a cambia found along the sides of root and stem
• Increase width or duameter of stem and root
• There are two types of lateral meristem
• Vascular cambium
• Cork cambium
___KINDS OF MERISTEMATIC TISSUE____
•INTERCALLARY
MERISTEM….
• Found at the base
of young leaves and
internodes
• Responsible for
further lengthing of
___PERMANENT TISSUE___
• Tissue that attained their mature form and
perform pacific funcation
• They stop dividing
• There are two types of permanent tissue
Complex
permanent
tissue
Simple
permanent
tissue
___SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE___
• Consist of only one type of cells
• DERMAL/SURFACE TISSUE
• External tissue
• Protect the plant act as outer covering
• Eepidermis ……..
• Periderm……
___SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE____
• EPIDERMIS……
• The outermost layer of primary plant body
• Cover the leaves, floral part of plants ,root and stem
• Generally only one layer of cutical is present
• Composed of unspecialized cells just like collenchyma and
saclernchyma cells
• Contain trichomes, bulliform cells and stomata
___SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE___
• STOMATA…..
• Pores if gas
exchange
• Present on both
surface of leaves
_____SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE___
•CUTICAL……
• Lines the outer wall
of the epidermis cells
• Made up of waxy
material that protect the
plant from dessication
____SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE___
•TRICHOMES……..
• Outgrowth of
epidermis cells
____SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE___
• PERIDERM (BARK)…..
• Outermost layer of plant body mostly in the
roots of woody plants
___GROUND TISSUES___
• Parenchyma
• Collenchyma
• Saleranchyma
• PARENCHYMA…..
• Known as precirsor of all living tissue
• Most primitive tissue
• Living and thin walled
• Cell wall is made up of cellulose and has chloroplast
___GROUND TISSUE___
• Help in respiration
• Power of division
• Wound healing
• COLLENCHYMA……
• Cell wall is made up of cellulose
and hemicellulose
• Have simple pit found in
herbaceous plants
• Provide tensile strength and
photosynthetic funcation
___GROUND TISSUE___
•SCLERANCHYMA…..
• They are dead cells
•Has long,narrow and
pointed end
•Wall is very thick
• Fibers and saclerides
are types of this….
___COMPLEX TISSUE___
• These are made up living and non living
• Act as single unit
• Complex tissue known as vascular tissue
• There are two tyoes of this tissue
• XYLEM……
• PHLOEM…..
____COMPLEX TISSUE____
• XYLEM…..
• Xylem Greek word mean Wood
• Also called wood because it is a major part of stem
• Funcation is conducting water, salt and minerales root to the
leaf
• Also provide mechanical strength
• It composed of
• Tracheides,Vessels,Wood fiber and Wood parenchyma
___COMPLEX TISSUE___
• PHLOEM……
• Phloem is Greek word mean bast
• Nucleus is absent but peripheral cytoplasm large or small
vacoule is present
• Living nucleus is present in companion cells control the
activities
• Composed of
• Seive tubes ,Companion Cells and Phloem fiber
